02 How can I support the
development of IB
Learner Profile at home?

The IB learner profile is integrated in the school community -- students,
teachers, administrators and parents, by having a common goal which
is to develop students to become international-minded learners. Each
member in the community is encouraged to recognize and support
these attributes.

One good way is to model these attributes at home. As simple as
commending your child for being caring when he/she is taking care of
his/her siblings or for when your child demonstrates being a
communicator by listening and expressing his/her wants properly.

Balanced

"They understand the importance of
intellectual, physical and emotional balance
to achieve personal well-being for
themselves and others."

How can parents support his/her child
who is well-balanced at home?

Model this attribute. Spend time as a
parent or family doing various
activities.

Encourage and support your child to
participate in a different activities.

Caring

"They show empathy, compassion and
respect towards the needs and feelings of
others. They have a personal commitment to
service, and act to make a positive
difference to the lives of others and to the
environment."

How can parents support his/her child who
is Caring at home?

Model caring behavior for your child
Commend your child when you have
noticed them helping others without
being asked, using kind words, thinking
of others and doing nice things for

others &/or the environment.

Communicator

"They understand and express ideas and
information confidently and creatively in
more than one language and in a variety of
modes of communication. They work
effectively and willingly in collaboration
with others"

How can parents support his/her child
who is a Communicator at home?

Encourage your child to write letters to
family members and household.

Ask your child thought provoking questions
and encourage them to discuss them with

you.
Be a good listener as this an important

part of communicating with others.

Inquirer

"They develop their natural curiosity. They
acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry
and research and show independence in
learning. They actively enjoy learning and this
love of learning will be sustained
throughout their lives."

How can parents support his/her child who
is an Inquirer at home?

Develop data collection skills: don’t
help too soon – let your child try to
figure out problems on their own.
Give ample time and/or materials for

open ended exploring

Knowledgeable

"They explore concepts, ideas and issues that
have local and global significance. In so doing,
they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop
understanding across a broad and balanced
range of disciplines"

How can parents support his/her child who
is Knowledgeable at home?

Set a reading time with him or her. Read a
reading level a bit higher than their
reading level, from a broad range of
topic/s.

Let them be familiar with current events by
reading the newspaper and watch the
news when appropriate.

Open-Minded

"They understand and appreciate their own
cultures and personal histories, and are open to
the perspectives, values and traditions of other
individuals and communities. They are
accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range
of points of view, and are willing to grow from
the experience."

How can parents support his/her child who
has an Open-Minded trait at home?

Encourage your child to try out new things
like food and games

Expose your child to different cultures,
celebrations and traditions. Be sure to
present them in a nonjudgmental way

Encourage your child to really listen to others
when they speak

Principled

"They act with integrity and honesty, with a
strong sense of fairness, justice and respect
for the dignity of the individual, groups and
communities. They take responsibility for their
own actions and the consequences that
accompany them."

How can parents support his/her child who
is Principled at home?

Involve your child in decision-making. An
example would be setting rules for a
game or activity and then ensure that
they stick to the ones that have been
decided upon.

When playing a game, don’t change the
rules or let your child win. It is important

that they know that it is okay to lose
sometimes.

Reflective

"They give thoughtful consideration to their own
learning and experience. They are able to assess and
understand their strengths and limitations in order to
support their learning and personal development."

How can parents support his/her child who is
Reflective at home?

First, ask your child what went well and what
went wrong in any activity

Next, ask your child how he/she felt before,
during and after the experience.

Finally, ask your child to reflect. Think of what will
allow him/her to perform better next time. What
new strategies she/he needs to adopt, what new

learning he/she needs etc.

Risk-Taker

"They approach unfamiliar situations and
uncertainty with courage and forethought,
and have the independence of spirit to
explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They
are brave and articulate in defending
their beliefs."

How can parents support his/her child who
is a Risk-Taker at home?

Motivate and encourage your child to
attempt something he/she is

uncomfortable doing and then reflect on
the experience

Explain the difference between being a
risk-taker by trying new things and
doing dangerous things.

"They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills
critically and creatively to recognize and approach
complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical
decisions."
