If Clauses

Conditional sentences หรือที่หลายคนรู้จักในนาม if-clause คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไข
ประกอบด้วยประโยคย่อย สองประโยค ประโยคหนึ่งขึ้นต้นด้วยคำว่า If กับอีกประโยค
หนึ่งมีหน้าตาเหมือนประโยคสมบูรณ์ทั่วไป สังเกตว่า ประโยคสองประโยคนี้สลับที่กันได้

จะยกประโยคไหนขึ้นต้นก็ได้ แล้วแต่การเน้นและความหมาย

4 ประเภทของประโยค If clause หรือ Conditional sentence

1. ZERO Conditional Sentences

วิธีใช้: ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นความจริง

ใช้สำหรับพูดถึงความจริงทั่วไป โดยใช้ present simple ในประโยคทั้งสองประโยคIf + present
simple, …. present simple. (คนไทยมักจะเขียนว่า If + subject + V1, subject + V1)ประโยค
แบบ zero conditional sentences ใช้พูดถึงกรณีที่ถ้าเกิดสิ่งหนึ่ง ต้องเกิดอีกสิ่งหนึ่งเสมอ เช่น

If people eat too much, they get fat. ถ้ากินมากจะอ้วน
If you touch a fire, you get burned. ถ้าแตะไฟก็จะโดนลวก
People die if they don’t eat. คนเราจะตายถ้าไม่กินอาหาร

2. FIRST Conditional Sentences
วิธีใช้: ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลซึ่งกันและกัน

ใช้สำหรับพูดว่าถ้าสิ่งหนึ่งเกิดขึ้น อีกสิ่งหนึ่งจะเกิดขึ้นหรืออาจจะเกิดขึ้น โดยใช้ If + present
simple แล้วตามด้วย future simple if + present simple, … will + infinitive (คนไทยมักจะ
เขียนว่า If + subject + V1, subject + will/be going to + V1)ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์เฉพาะซึ่งอาจ
เป็นไปได้ หรือผู้พูดคิดว่าจะเกิดขึ้น เช่น

If it rains, I won’t go to the park. ถ้าฝนตก ฉันจะไม่ไปสวนสาธารณะ
If I study today, I‘ll go to the party tonight. ถ้าวันนี้ฉันอ่านหนังสือ คืนนี้จะไปปาร์ตี้
If I have enough money, I‘ll buy some new shoes. ถ้ามีเงินพอ ฉันจะซื้อรองเท้าใหม่

Zero conditional กับ first conditional ต่างกันตรง
ที่ใช้กับสถานการณ์คนละประเภทดังได้กล่าวไปแล้ว

ตัวอย่าง

Zero conditional: If you sit in the sun, you get burned. (ใครก็ตามที่) นั่งตากแดดจะผิวไหม้
First conditional: If you sit in the sun, you’ll get burned. ถ้าเธอนั่งตากแดดผิวเธอจะไหม้นะ

3. SECOND Conditional Sentences
วิธีใช้: ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามความจริงในปัจจุบัน หรือ อนาคต

First conditional ใช้พูดถึงสิ่งที่ผู้พูดคาดคะเนว่าจะเกิดขึ้น แต่ Second conditional จะใช้พูด
ถึงสิ่งที่ผู้พูดคิดว่าไม่น่าจะเกิดขึ้น ประโยคแบบ second conditional นี้ใช้ If + past simple คู่
กับ would + infinitive เช่น

If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house. ถ้าถูกล็อตเตอรี่จะซื้อบ้านหลังใหญ่ (ซึ่ง
คิดว่าคงไม่ถูกล็อตเตอรี่หรอก)
If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello. ถ้าได้พบราชีนีอังกฤษฉันจะกล่าว
สวัสดี
She would travel all over the world if she were rich. เขาจะเที่ยวรอบโลกถ้ามีเงิน
มากๆ

– ใช้พูดถึงเหตการณ์ในปัจจุบันที่เป็นไปไม่ได้เลย ไม่จริงเลย เช่น
If I had his number, I would call him. ถ้ามีเบอร์เขาฉันจะโทรหาเขา (แต่จริงๆฉันไม่มี
เบอร์เขา)
If I were you, I wouldn’t go out with that man. ถ้าฉันเป็นเธอฉันจะไม่ไปเที่ยวกับเขา

ประโยค second conditional ต่างกับ first conditional ตรงที่แบบนี้มีความเป็นไปได้น้อยมาก เช่น
Second conditional: If I had enough money I would buy a house with twenty bedrooms
and a swimming pool. ถ้ามีเงินพอฉันจะซื้อบ้านที่มีห้องยี่สิบห้องกับสระว่ายน้ำ (ซึ่งคงเป็นไปไม่ได้
อยู่แล้ว เป็นแค่ฝัน)
First conditional: If I have enough money, I’ll buy some new shoes. ถ้ามีเงินพอฉันจะซื้อ
รองเท้าใหม่ (มีความเป็นไปได้มากกว่ามาก)

4. THIRD Conditional Sentences

วิธีใช้: ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามความจริงในอดีต

ประโยค conditional แบบสุดท้ายใช้ If + past perfect (subject + had + V3) คู่กับ would have
+ V3 ประโยคแบบนี้ใช้พูดเกี่ยวกับอดีตที่ไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นจริง ว่าถ้าเกิดขึ้นแล้วจะเป็นอย่างไร เช่น

If she had studied, she would have passed the exam. ถ้าเขาอ่านหนังสือ เขาคงสอบผ่าน
ไปแล้ว (ซึ่งจริงๆผู้พูดรู้ว่าไม่ได้อ่านและสอบตก)
If I hadn’t eaten so much, I wouldn’t have felt sick. ถ้ากินไม่มากฉันคงไม่ป่วย (แต่จริงๆ
ฉันกินเยอะ จึงป่วย)
If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn’t have missed the plane. ถ้าเราขึ้นแท็กซี่มาเราคงไม่
ตกเครื่องบิน

5. MIXED Conditional Sentences

นอก จากนั้นยังมีการนำ conditional sentences สองแบบมาผสมกันอีกด้วยค่ะ โดยมากใช้เวลา
พูดถึงสิ่งที่ไม่เป็นความจริงในอดีตที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับ ปัจจุบัน เช่น

She would be a rich widow now if she’d married him. เธอคงจะได้เป็นแม่หม้าย
เศรษฐีไปแล้วถ้าเธอแต่งงานกับเขา (ตอนนั้นไม่แต่งกับเขา ตอนนี้เลยไม่ได้เป็นแม่หม้าย
เศรษฐี)
If I’d studied law, I’d be an attorney now. ถ้าตอนนั้นเรียนนิติตอนนี้ฉันก็คงจะเป็น
ทนายความแล้ว
