Campus Service consists of four integrated routes (the BLUE and WHITE LOOPs

CATABUS

The CATABUS fixed-route community bus system provides
service between downtown State College, the Penn State
University Park Campus, and many special points of interest, as
well as the Borough of Bellefonte, the Village of Pleasant Gap,
and Stormstown. It also includes fare-free LOOP and LINK
campus circulator and cross-campus service (see page 12).

CATABUS

Fare Options
Cash, tokens, and passes may be used for fare on any CATABUS Community Route.

Cash-$1.75: Exact change only, drivers do not carry change.
There is no fare on the LOOP and LINK routes.

Tokens: One token is valid for one fare.
Single tokens - $1.75, Roll of 20 - $34.00

Tokens are available for purchase at CATA’s Customer Service Center, the HUB
Information Desk and seven Commons Desks on campus, the Student Book Store
and McLanahan’s Student Store, and the State College Area High School Roar Store.

Passes: For frequent riders, CATA offers OnePasses, good for unlimited rides on all
CATABUS routes. OnePasses are sold in increments of one and four months based on
the following cost schedule:

1 Month OnePass $69.00
4 Month OnePass $268.00

A three-month pass, for example, would cost $207.00 (the cost of three 1-month passes)
and a five-month pass would cost $337.00 (the cost of a 4-month pass plus a 1-month pass).

OnePasses are available in monthly increments ranging from 1 to 12 months, beginning on
any day of a given month.

Family Passes are available and valid for unlimited use of all CATABUS routes and include
additional passes for a spouse and all immediate family members under 18 years of age
(a minimum of 3 persons qualify as a family). The cost for a Family Pass is equal to two
times the regular pass rate (e.g. a 4-month Family Pass would cost $536.00).

Youth Passes are available for middle and high school students for the deeply discounted
monthly cost of $23.00 per month (a $69.00 value). The passes offer unlimited access to all
CATABUS routes. High school students must present a current high school identification
card. Middle school students without school identification must present a statement signed
by a parent to verify middle school attendance.

Penn State Reduced-Fare Transit Programs
Penn State University Transportation Services provides access to reduced-fare
CATABUS service to/from campus for eligible Penn State full-time employees and
graduate students. For more information, visit the University Parking Office at 1
Eisenhower Parking Deck, call (814) 865-1436 or visit www.transportation.psu.edu.

Payment Options for Tokens and OnePasses CATABUS
CATA accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and LionCash+ for debit or credit purchases of
tokens and passes at its Customer Service Center.

OnePasses by Mail
If you currently have a OnePass, you may order your next pass by mail. Simply visit the CATA
website at www.catabus.com, where you will find instructions and an order form, which may
be completed and mailed to CATA with your payment.

Fare Exceptions
Exceptions to the standard fare are as follows:

Children Under 40” Tall (accompanied by an adult).........................................Free

Persons Age 65 and Over (with Transit ID Card)...................................Free
Persons age 65 and over may ride the CATABUS system free by presenting a Transit
Identification Card as they board the bus. The card is available free of charge at CATA’s
Customer Service Center; an application and proof of age are required. Persons 65 and
over presenting a Medicare Card may ride for half the cash fare ($0.85)

Individuals with Disabilities and Persons 65 and Over (without a Transit
Identification Card).......................................................................Half Fare - $0.85
Individuals with disabilities may ride any CATABUS route for half of the cash fare
by presenting a Reduced Fare Identification Card or a valid U.S. Medicare Card. A
reduced fare card is available free of charge at CATA’s Customer Service Center; an
application and a doctor’s certification of disability are required. Single reduced fare
ride coupons ($.85) (each valid for a single one-way trip) and books of 20 ($17.00) are
also available for purchase at CATA’s Customer Service Center.

Persons age 65 and over without a Transit Identification Card may ride for half of the
cash fare by presenting a valid U.S. Medicare Card.

Transfers: If you are using cash or tokens as fare and you need to take more than one
CATABUS route to complete a one-way trip, ask the driver of the first bus you board for a
transfer when you get on the bus. (Transfers will not be granted to those requesting them
upon deboarding.) Transfers are free, valid for up to one hour, or the next scheduled bus, and
substitute as fare for the second bus ride needed to continue your one-way trip. Transfers
may not be used for return trips.

Accessible Service
Each CATABUS vehicle is fully-accessible, accommodates wheelchairs (weight restrictions can
be found posted on the buses, on the CATA website, www.catabus.com, and by calling (814)
238-CATA(2282)) and features bus stop annunciators that provide both audible and visual bus
stop announcements.

Bike Racks
CATA’s buses are equipped with bicycle racks for the convenience of those making multimodal
commutes. There is no charge to use the racks and an instructional video is available on the
CATA website, www.catabus.com (click on “How-To Videos”), showing how to use them.

The CATARIDE program provides curb-to-curb transportation primarily for persons 65 and
over and persons whose disabilities prevent their use of the CATABUS system. Additional
information and applications are available at CATA’s Customer Service Center, by calling

registered for the program may make reservations for service by calling (814) 238-6100.

CATACOMMUTE
CATACOMMUTE is a family of transportation services that includes the RideShare, Vanpool
and Emergency Ride Home programs, designed to provide long-distance commuters with
easy and economical commute alternatives. Additional information is available on the CATA

Text Notifications for Specific Stops
Real-time next bus arrival times can be accessed for a specific stop by texting CBstop# to
321-123 (e.g. CB1 for College & Allen, bus stop numbers are displayed at each stop) and by
scanning the QR code on the CATA schedule at the stop.

CATABUS - Reading CATABUS Schedules Locate where you are and where Locate the timed stop closest to your
you want to go. Let’s assume you’re current location. In this example, it
at Sierra Ln. and Park Forest Ave. is Stop 2 at N. Oak and Eastwood.

Download CATA’s FREE myStop real-time bus tracking mobile app for iPhone and Android

Riding The Bus

After checking the bus schedule of the route you want to use to find the closest bus stop, go CATABUS - Riding the Bus
to that stop. CATABUS bus stop locations are marked by bus stop signs and all Community
Route bus stop locations also include an information holder mounted directly below the sign
showing the times that route serves that stop. Buses stop only at these posted bus stop signs.

Identifying Your Bus
Look at the headsign on the front of the bus. The letter will identify the route, followed by a
description of its primary destination.

Boarding the Bus
• As the bus approaches, stand close to the bus stop and signal the driver.

• Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, and then board at the front door of the bus. Please
have your exact fare, token, or pass ready as you board the bus. No fare is required when riding
the LOOP and LINK routes. Drivers do not carry change.

Paying Your Fare
Near the front door is a farebox that reads passes and accepts tokens and American bills and coins.

Cash & Tokens - Coins and tokens are dropped into the left slot
on the farebox and bills are inserted into the slot on the right.
The farebox will “beep” to tell you and the driver that the correct
fare has been paid. If you have paid with cash or tokens and
need to transfer to another CATABUS route to complete your
one-way trip, ask the driver for a transfer before you take your
seat. Transfers are free and valid for up to one hour or the next
scheduled bus.

Passes - If you have a CATA OnePass, Transit ID Card (persons 65 and over), CATA
Apartment Pass or Penn State Ride For Five Pass, it is “swiped” from right to left, with the
picture facing the driver, through the reader in front of the coin slot on the farebox. Reduced
Fare Identification Cards are shown to the driver upon boarding.

Getting Off the Bus
Shortly after the bus passes the stop before yours or when you hear/see your stop announced,
pull the yellow cord located directly above or alongside your seat. A “Stop Requested” light
and/or bell will let the driver know that you want to get off. (If you’re using a mobility device
while on the bus, you may also request the use of the bus’s lift or ramp by pushing the marked
button located near the accessible seating toward the front of the bus.) When the bus comes to
a complete stop, exit the bus through the rear door when possible.
