 Community colleges
o Retention?

 Ivy Tech Community College is the nation’s largest statewide community
college with single accreditation and Indiana’s largest postsecondary
institution, serving nearly 200,000 students a year. The College has 14
administrative regions that include all of Indiana’s 92 counties.

 The College has embarked on an effort to design a comprehensive
approach to academic advising that provides effective advising for the
greatest number of students. The design leverages the best practices of the
Ivy Tech regions, the Achieving the Dream program, and NACADA, as
well as collective input from advisors, faculty, and students.

 Starfish provides highly integrated software solutions that work across
academic and student affairs departments to holistically support the
success and retention of students. Specifically, the company offers two
software systems that work together to reinforce the efforts of academic
advisors as they help students overcome challenges. Starfish EARLY
ALERT™ is an early warning and student tracking system that makes it
possible for instructors, advisors, and academic staff to identify at-risk
students in real time. Starfish CONNECT™, an education networking and
case-management system, helps students access a personalized contact
list of instructors, advisors, and counselors who are dedicated to helping
them succeed. Together, the systems generate valuable performance
and resource utilization data for the institution, which helps optimize
future service offerings.

 Presence is another software like starfish

o “VolunteerMatch is the most effective way to recruit highly

qualified volunteers for your nonprofit. We match you with

people who are passionate about and committed to your

cause, and who can help when and where you need them.

And because volunteers are often donors as well, we make
it easy for them to contribute their time and money.”

 SurveyMonkey

emails, social media, and even on their websites. By sending a survey to your volunteers

after the event, your organization can gain useful information for the next event.
 twtpoll

o enables users to create polls that can be share through twitter and other social media sites.

This is another great survey tool for gaining useful information.
 Transportation Barriers

o “Many of these same managers also indicate that volunteer drivers are the hardest

volunteers to recruit. However, thousands of volunteers are recruited to drive

passengers and in many instances they drive them in their own vehicles. At the same

time, managers also indicate that volunteer drivers are not difficult to retain and once

you’ve got them, you’ve got them.”

o the 2015 STAR Awards application* indicate that they provide considerable assistance

in the form of: 1. stay at the destination (84%); 2. door-to-door (83%); 3. door-through-

door (79%); and 4. curb-to-curb (68%).

o • 64% of them had driven 50+ years. • the majority were age 65+ • a majority had

graduated from college • a high percentage had annual household incomes of more

than $60,000 • 60% had incomes over $30,000 and 19% had incomes of more

than $75,000

o Volunteer drivers surveyed also indicated they contributed considerable time. For

example, 10% of the survey respondents reported that they drove less than one hour a

week, 55% 1–5 hours, 19% 6–10 hours, 10% 11–20 hours, 6% more than 20 hours and

10% less than one hour. Only 13% had volunteered to drive for less than 1 year, 33%

had volunteered for 1–3 years, 24% had volunteered for 4–6 years, and 30% had

volunteered for 7 or more years. The people who volunteer, the activities they

undertake, the satisfaction they receive and time and years they contribute as volunteer

drivers provide some general guidance into the recruitment and retention of volunteer

drivers.
