Hello, Im Riley Whited, I am 14 years old and I live in Columbus Ohio. I am a freshman at Olentangy Berlin High School and I am a full time competitive dancer, who does every genre of dance you can think of. In my free time, I like to listen to music and hang out with my friends and family. I live with my mom, dad, brother Logan, and my sister Macie. Here is a day in my life as a student athlete at Berlin High School. I wake up at 6:00 am to get ready for school, when I am done getting ready for the day I have a heavy protein packed meal. Protein is a big part in my life as a dancer because it allows me to gain a natural balance of energy instead of artificially pumping my body with energy drinks. I then leave for school at 7:00 am with my brother Logan, and we listen to music the whole way. In second period I listen to all of my competition songs so I can prepare for the afternoon. This gives me a lot of mental preparation for what I will be doing later that evening. When I finish my school day, I head to Mrs. Kelsey who is the trainer at 3140 BSR, and she makes sure I am healthy and strong for practice. When I get home, I change into my dance clothes before taking a nap. One of the downsides about being a student athlete is that I don’t get as much sleep as my body needs. Sleep contributes to the amount of energy my body has for the day so I make sure to get lots of rest before class. When I wake up I grab a protein bar and a protein shake for a quick snack to energize me. Making sure to pick the right foods for my body and health took many years to perfect, and I am still learning the tips and tricks to a proper diet. My brother has been a huge help in deciding when and what to eat during the day. He has been a student athlete his whole life and has also had to learn how to eat the right things to preserve his energy. My dance class starts around five o’clock and ends at around nine, with no breaks in between. As exhausting as it may sound, for a girl who has been dancing their whole life, it’s not terrible. It is a night full of strength and endurance and tons of hard work, but it’s all worth it. I practice all 12 months out of the year for around five competitions. Now to some people this might sound crazy because most people only practice for around three months but that’s something I am used to. Although it’s a lot of hard work, the bonding and experience I get from dancing cannot be replaced by any other sport, and I couldn’t be more happy for the sport God gave me. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I hope you enjoyed a day in my life! An action packed day By : Riley Whited ‘27 Pg: 4 May 2024

The terror of tornadoes Current weather forecasts predicted some of the worst weather in Ohio with a four to five severe level warning. Many citizens of Ohio were recently hit by the tornado that came through on Thursday, March 14, 2024. This storm started in Indiana and moved through Kentucky all the way to Delaware, Ohio. “My house and neighborhood were hit really badly from the tornado recently and it actually scared me. This past storm hit my school as well and I’m terrified about what’s going to happen tonight, ” Alaina Dorto ‘25 said. Olentangy Berlin High School was hit by this past tornado recently and the fields of the school were destroyed. Many students of the school predict that this storm will only get worse as time passes on and the damages will increase. Flood warnings have passed through Columbus, Ohio as well, with a predicted one to four inches of rain according to Spectrum news. Citizens of this area are encouraged to stay inside and limit road travels as much as possible. Ohio has been hit with many tornadoes over the past year and areas are not getting the recommended time to recover from the damage. In 2024, over 35 tornadoes have been reported or predicted to hit Ohio. “ The tornado ripped my shingles off my roof and broke a couple of my windows. Before we had time to recover, there’s another tornado on its way, ” Mia Coriell ‘27. Coriells neighboorhood was hit pretty hard by the tornado and even now not all the houses look the same. Olentangy Berlin has provided its community with resources and extra help to all that needs it, really showing what their school stands for. Mr. Joe Andenoro is an Assistant Principal at Olentangy Berlin High School, alongside Mrs. Tera Thompson and lead principal Mr. Todd Spinner. Andenoro grew up in Berra Ohio, around the Cleveland area, and now lives in Powell Ohio. He lives with his wife, daughter Cameron, and two bulldogs, Brunson and Maisey. “They get excited when I put on socks because she knows that means it’s time for a walk,” Andenoro said. Andenoros dogs are a big part of his life and he tries to spend as much time with them as he can. Andenoro enjoys to vacation with family and friends. He strives to teach and to help students want to be here and feel comfortable at school. Although Andenoro is a teacher now, it wasn’t always this way. “I never wanted to become a teacher,” Andenoro said. Andenoro talks about how becoming a teacher was never a part of his plan as a child and young adult. He never liked how the school atmosphere was and planned to get as far away from education as he could. Andenoro’s High School experience was not like the environment at Berlin. He went to a school where academics was their only goal, because of this Andenoro said that he was never connected with his school. He says that when he found Berlin, he couldn’t be more thrilled. “We do everything a little to a lot better,” Andenoro said. In Andenoros’ free time he likes to send pictures of the student section to his family, to show how much he enjoys his job and his mother couldn’t be more proud. Andenoro walks through the hallway while students are in passing periods and soak up the positive atmosphere. Mr Andenoro is grateful for his experience and time here at 3140 Berlin Station Road. Home Alone is a PG movie released in 1990 about a young boy named Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) who gets left at home, alone on his family’s vacation. Kevin is not a very independent child and often relies on other people in his life to do simple tasks. Kevin often misbehaves and is very rude to his family. He is also scared of his neighbor “Old Man” Marley (played by Roberts Blossom). Kevin’s brother Buzz (played by Devin Ratray) told him scary stories about Marley before their trip and this causes him to not want to be near Marley. Kevin is a part of a very large family and when his mom sends him up to the attic to go to bed, they forget him up there. While his family is away, two burglars Marv (played by Daniel Stern) and Harry (played by Joe Pesci) break into the McCallisters’ house. Kevin must stop them and keep the burglars from destroying the house. While Kevin is home, Kevin’s Mom (played by Catherine O’hare) becomes worried sick about him and struggles to find a plane home for her son. Mrs. McCallister also tried to call everyone in the neighborhood, but during the early 1990s phones were still on landlines, and the lines were down. Home Alone is an amazing movie for families to sit down and enjoy together around the holidays. Home Alone is a movie that I look forward to sitting down with my family and watching every year. I can remember when I was about six years old, sitting in front of the television dying laughing when Harry got covered in feathers while trying to rob the house. Even my mom, who does not like movies, sits and watches Home Alone every year without checking her phone once. This movie is an action-packed and hilarious film that I have rarely heard any bad reviews about. Due to this, I give Home Alone a 9/10 feathers. For some people, this movie might be a little scary, and even for me, I have to close my eyes at some points. However, overall it is a very age-appropriate and great movie for the whole family. Wrestling is a very popular sport here at 3140 Berlin Station Road, but a tough and bonding experience overall. Berlin Boys Wrestling competed at one of the most elite tournaments of the season this weekend. Alliance Ohio hosted the Top Gun on January 12-13 2024 and all Varsity wrestlers competed for the Gold. “I’m a little uneasy for this weekend but also ready to wrestle,” Senior Peter Emery said. Emery has been wrestling since he was a kid, but for the past couple of years, he has been dealing with injury after injury. Emery hopes to make it through the rest of the season without getting injured again. Olentangy Berlin High School had four wrestlers place in the top 8 on Saturday. Chase Cone placed 8th at 157 pounds, Emery placed 7th at 144 pounds, Luke Martin placed 6th at 126 pounds and Maddux Nauman placed 5th at 113 pounds. Coaches, Teachers, and family gathered around to watch the wrestlers compete although it wasn’t all about competing. “Wrestling is a very competitive sport at times, although I watch these boys every day for months and they are all so supportive of each other. You know you can’t see this type of bond in every sport, they all want the same thing but they still support each other even if that means they don’t come out on top,” Coach Josh Pace said. Top Gun was a tough competition and not many wrestlers got to experience that shine. Out of the 14 wrestlers that went to the tournament, only four of them placed. Despite not getting what they wanted or what they had been working all season for, These boys did not let a teammate wrestle without an entire line of companions beside them. Berlin achieved the highest they have ever placed at Top Gun in school history this weekend and the wrestlers are here to achieve and strive for more. Phones connect students, Have you ever heard the phrase ‘It’s because of that phone’ or ‘Your phone is distracting your learning’? I have heard it my whole life, from parents, teachers, and other adults who disagree with the amount of phone usage in schools. Teachers and Administrators throughout the United States believes that phones are harming our learning environment. Teachers and administrators from Harvard Law School have noticed that since covid students have started to incorporate their phones into lessons and activities during school hours. These teachers believe that instead of lecturing students on the ‘harmful’ effects of phones, they should start to incorporate phones into their lessons as a boosted education tool. One teacher took a step back and asked why are these students feeling the nerve to go on their phones and not pay attention to the lesson they were teaching. Mesfin Awoke Bekalu believes that phones are helpful to reach students who need better resources although this does not mean that phones are always acceptable. Phones can be very helpful and useful during school but at some points, they can become a distraction and harmful to your learning. During tests and quizzes, phones can be used to cheat and damage the students’ learning, but this should not be the school district’s only excuse to completely hinder away from phones.    Freshman Gianna Nieman believes that phones should be allowed in school. “My phone allows me to become more connected with my peers and school by giving me resources to reach out and become a member of my community,” Nieman said. Without access to phones, we would become disconnected from the world around us and with our community. Here at 3140 Berlin Station Road, phones have not been banned and students believe that they do more good than harm. Ohio States greatest defeat Ohio State University has been rivals with Michigan University since 1918. This Rivalry has always consisted of at least one game every season. Named by the fans, this rival game became “The Game”. “You learn quickly when you’re here, but every year you’re here, you learn more, and it has a more significant impact on you as a person,” Ryan Day, head coach for Ohio State said according to People Magazine. Even though the rivalry sparks hatred between the two teams, Day stays professional and does not speak negatively about the other players, staff, coaches, or fans. In 2023 the stakes for “The Game” were at an all time high. Both Ohio State and Michigan had a perfect record with 11- 0. Whoever won this game guaranteed their spot in the Big Ten Championship. Olentangy Berlin students have been nonstop about this game for weeks, and you could hear talks around the whole school about “The Game ‘’. “ We’re going to win this year, I can feel it,” student Madie Ziegler said. As the clock ticked up to the game, the crowd in the stands and fans from home were on the edge of their seats. Families from all over the country tuned in to see which team would advance. When halftime hit, the score was close with Michigan over Ohio State 14-10. Unfortunately when the clock hit zero, Ohio State lost the game 24-30. “I don’t wanna talk about it,” big-time Ohio State fan Mike Parker said. Inside Berlin, many students were disappointed over the loss. Many yelled through the hallways that the game was rigged, or Kyle Mccord, the quarterback for Ohio State, was the reason they lost. But some of the students seemed to be happy that Michigan won. “The game was not rigged, and just as we did the past three years, we will win again next year” Michigan fan Mia Coriell ‘27 said. Although the Ohio State Football team lost this year, students at Berlin are determined to win next year.
