2017 September
A Letter from Pastor Allen Sager:
What shall we think about as September arrives?
Labor Day – a day off work for some. WIKAPEDIA says:
Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in
September. It honors the movement and the contributions that workers have made to
the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country.
We do need to thank God for those who work to produce the things and the services
we use. A long weekend is a good time for family events. Many count the day as the end
of summer (even though there will be more warm weather!) School resumes (or has resumed)
in early September. It is a good time to remember learning is not just for some but for all
of us. God always has something new for us to notice or to do! Let’s remember to encourage
students of all ages.
My Presbyterian Planning calendar says September 1 is “World Day of Prayer for the care
of creation.” Maybe we should not only pray for creation that day but also to think about
the ways we use and misuse this wonderful world we have been given and how much we
misuse and waste. I do not suggest a complete adoption of the old motto “use is up, wear
it out, make do, do without” but perhaps that can help us better understand the remarkable
gifts God has given us!
I encourage you to use Fall as a time to be active (or become more active) in your home
church! September 3 my text will be Obadiah (the whole book is 21 verses!) For me it
raises questions as to application – It applied to the people of Edom but I began to wonder
if it applies to us and how we treat others. I couple it with 1 Peter 2:1-12 for more insight.
Hope to see you there September 3!
Grace & Peace to you all,
Pastor Al

heat and wind that is once again readying itself to rush it all away in a climatic symphony
of color and scent is- in my opinion, one of the best parts of living on earth." -Victoria Erickson

"September days have the warmth of summer in their briefer hours, but in their
lengthening evenings a prophetic breath of autumn. The cricket chirps in the noon-
tide, making the most of what remains of his brief life. The bumblebee is busy
among the clover blossoms of the aftermath, and their shrill and dreamy hum hold
the outdoor world above the voices of the song birds, now silent or departed."

MATTHEW 114:22-33 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the
other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he
went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when
the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried
out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not
afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the
water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the
water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to
sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and
caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when
they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and wor-
shipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
A Little More About…..
Megan RawsteRn
Hi there, my name is Megan Rawstern and I play piano for the Congregational
United Church of Christ. I am from the Huron/Wolsey area, raised on a farm
but currently live in Aberdeen, SD while attending Presentation College.
I am currently pursuing my Bachelors
of Science in Nursing, graduating in
May 2019. One of my future goals in-
cludes becoming a Nurse Practitioner
and being the best nurse I can be. While
living and going to school in Aberdeen, I
am employed at Avera Mother Joseph
Manor as a Certified Nursing Assistant
while also caring for an elderly lady in
her home.
During the school year I tutor students
in the Anatomy Lab and help prepare
the cadavers. Working at all of these
positions has only strengthened my pas-
sion for nursing and caring for oth-
ers. In my free time I like to camp, fish,
read, and spend time with family,
friends, and, of course, Moose.
Moose is a five year old, 90 lbs., spoiled
rotten German Shorthaired Pointer who
absolutely loves ice cream, car rides, and
chasing gophers. If you combine the car
ride with a stop at Dairy Queen he is in
paradise.
A Little More About…..
Micah bRown
My name is Micah Brown and I play the
piano every week at Virgil's church, and
once in a while at the Congregational Church
here in Huron. I really enjoy using the ability
to play the piano for helping people worship
God.
Right now I attend the Huron Community
Campus seeking to get my generals at a low
price, so I will still be playing in this area for
at least the rest of the year.
After that, I plan to pursue a major in soft-
ware development at Dakota State University.
One of my main goals in life has been to be the
best that I can be, so that I can be the
happiest I can be, and share that happiness
with others.

Things You May Love About anEmpty Nest:
(adapted from grownandflown.com)
1. Sleep uninterrupted– empty nester sleep is very close to pre-kid sleep.
2. You may get to know (better) the one person left in the nest…
3. The cost of going to the grocery store will DROP.
4. Reaching in the refrigerator for your favorite item will be rewarding, not finding an
empty carton.
5. Less laundry. A LOT LESS.
6. The kitchen sink stays clean...no stockpiles of dishes found in bedrooms, and your
favorite mug is exactly where you want it… every time.
7. Going out to eat is not rushed, and… cheaper.
8. Making dinner is no longer an issue of what is healthiest for a growing child, it will be
okay if you eat a yogurt and an apple…or an incredibly fancy meal.
9. Utility bills go DOWN.
10. The house will generally stay as clean as you want.
11. TV noise will be what you want to hear and when you want to hear it.
12. No more driving kids to practice, to movies or anywhere else.
13. But the best part of an empty nest? It has nothing to do with yourselves, but every
thing to do with your kids. Seeing them mature, appreciate the home they grew up in
and the parents who raised them is heartening, as is hearing about their new
experiences. Watching them as they form adult bonds with their siblings is one of the
most satisfying aspects of parenting.
14. So enjoy patting yourselves on the back for a job well done!
“When mothers talk about the depression of the empty nest, they’re not mourning the passing of all those wet towels
on the floor, or the music that numbs your teeth, or even the bottles of capless shampoo dribbling down the shower
drain. They’re upset because they have gone from being the supervisor of a child’s life to a spectator. It’s like being
the vice president of the United States.”- Erma Bombeck
“Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is
happening already – you can see it now! I will make
a road through the wilderness and give you
streams of water there.”- Isaiah 43:19

The Skovlunds One week ago today I had an amazing correspondence

more meaning to me than most I have had in a long
while. I wish I had one last chance to hold a live con-
