Welcome Winter
Here’s wishing you a happy New Year!
After consuming sacks full of Halloween candy and turkey with all the trimmings,
we roll (hopefully, not literally) right into Christmas cookies and New Year’s feasts.
Hey, that big Super Bowl spread is right around the corner!
As is to be expected, turning the calendar from December to January is also the
most popular time of the year for people to try to get healthy. Gyms and diet plan
companies do a brisk business from this predictable annual ritual.
There’s no big secret to weight loss, at least from a scientific point of view. Losing
weight comes from creating a “caloric deficit,” where you burn more than you take
in. Of course the best way to achieve “burning” is through regular exercise while
increasing consumption of lower-calorie, nutritious foods, resulting in a net loss.
Sadly, about 90% of new exercisers quit their fitness routines before summer starts.
There are many reasons – or excuses, depending on your point of view. Some are
tired, some too busy, some injured and some VERY hungry. But the biggest reason
cited for quitting is frustration.
Remember, weight loss is not a quick-fix operation. Maybe you work very well
under deadline pressure at your job, but approaching weight loss this way is not
only impractical, it can be downright unhealthy.
Studies show that it’s almost impossible to succeed without setting real, reachable
goals that translate into long-term lifestyle changes. You don’t have to get
everything in shape in time for Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras)!
As always, this issue is full of helpful and healthful tips on how to make changes
for the better one step at a time. We will tackle weight loss, exercise and appetite
control. You’ll learn the healthy ways to cut calories, and how to run your body’s
machinery more efficiently on less fuel. It’s time to BE Well!
