Welcome to the 40th Annual Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event

Across the globe the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event is considered by many to be one of
the most challenging equestrian competitions. Horse and rider must have an extraordinary
relationship to compete in each phase of the event. Success in a CCI 4* event such as the
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event is the culmination of a rider’s endless pursuit of discipline
and accuracy.

Over the past three decades, Rolex, the United States Equestrian Federation, the
Kentucky Horse Park and Equestrian Events, Inc., have worked together to ensure the
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event remains one of the premier competitions on the U.S.
eventing calendar. The organizers are not alone in executing the event. This year over
2000 passionate volunteers contributed their valuable time to ensure the success of Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event. Your impact does not go unnoticed.

Over the next few days we are sure to witness some of the world’s finest displays of
eventing. More than 70 riders from around the world have their eyes set on the $400,000
purse and a Rolex timepiece. The Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event is part of a thrilling
quest towards the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing title. To triumph in this ultimate equine
test, a rider must consecutively win three competitions: Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event,
Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, and the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
Since its inception only two riders have been successful in achieving this historic feat.
Rolex Testimonee Pippa Funnell first captured the Grand Slam in 2003 and most recently
Michael Jung in 2016.

The excitement of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event will be available to fans throughout
the country when it airs on NBC, Sunday, May 7th from 1:30pm - 3:00pm.

On behalf of Rolex, I wish the competitors a safe and successful weekend and I thank them
for their continual commitment to the sport.

Yours sincerely,

On behalf of Land Rover, I am delighted to welcome you to Lexington for the 2017 edition of the
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event Presented by Land Rover.
As one of six annual Four-Star Eventing competitions around the globe, the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day
Event is one of the most prestigious competitions on the eventing calendar. We continue to be
astounded by the level of talent that is on display throughout the weekend each year, with every rider
exhibiting their commitment to the sport and determination to be at the top of their game.
Now in our eighth year as Official Vehicle to the United States Equestrian Federation, Land Rover
continues to be an enthusiastic supporter of the U.S. Eventing Team. In 2011 we introduced the
‘Land Rover Best Ride of the Day’ to reward the U.S. rider who is closest to the optimum cross-country
time. It has since been won by legends of the sport including Olympic Bronze Medallist, Phillip Dutton
and last year’s winner, U.S. Event Team rider, Lauren Kieffer. This year the winning rider will earn a 24
month lease to a Land Rover Discovery Sport and will be presented with the keys following the cross-
country competition on the Saturday.
We would like to invite all attendees to Land Rover’s ‘ultimate stable’ experience in the sponsor village.
It will feature the all-new Land Rover Discovery available with seven passenger seating, and a range of
top equestrian apparel and equipment along with a live farrier display.
Aside from the equestrian sport, we look forward to hosting our annual ‘Land Rover Tailgate Challenge’
which takes place on Saturday. We invite Land Rover owners to take part in the highly competitive
contest which encourages them to use their designing skills to create their take on quintessential British
tailgating. A winner will be crowned for delivering the most stylish and creative tailgate.
We also look forward to inviting ticket holders to test drive a selection of our vehicles in a specially
designed off-road demonstration course. With the opportunity to experience the newest Land Rover
models including the latest Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport and
the All New Discovery, this is certainly an activity not to be missed!
Lastly for all the four-legged companions in attendance, please visit our ‘Rover Lounge’ next to the test
drive where your canine friends will be showered in treats and fresh water.
Whether you are new to the event this year, or you are returning as an experienced Rolex Kentucky
Three-Day Event goer, we extend our warmest wishes to you all for wonderful few days of world class
competition.
Sincerely,

Dressage Test in a Three-Day Event is much the same as that for including
compulsory figures in the short program of competitive figure skating — to
ensure that the proper foundation has been laid for the broader demands of the
complete competition. Dressage is the basis for the successful completion of the
jumping tests that are to come, for without obedience, ability, cooperation and
suppleness, horse and rider leave their performance in these tests to chance.

DRESSAGE TEST RIDE Photo by stockimageservices.com

Kathleen Blauth-Murray (USA) and Ballynoe Castle RM

Ballynoe Castle RM (Reggie) is legendary in the world of Eventing. He is being
officially retired at Rolex Kentucky Sunday, so this will be his last performance
in the Rolex Stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park. (Read more about Reggie
on page 37.)

His sole rider in competition up to 2017 has been Buck Davidson. But Reggie’s
story wouldn’t be the success it has been without his faithful groom and best friend,
Kathleen Murray, who rides him today to provide the test ride that enables the
Ground Jury to compare how they score the competition test movements.

In Buck Davidson’s words: “Kathleen and Reggie are truly what people envision when they talk about a girl and
her horse. I have never seen anything get the service that Reggie gets. Every day he gets the best room service,
the best maid, the best hair dresser, the best groomer and, most importantly, a best friend from Kathleen. Then
the poor thing gets me as the rider! Who said life is fair! Actually, in the last few years in his career Kathleen did
most of the riding on Reggie. Without Kathleen, there is no chance Reggie would have become the horse that
he became.”

ERRORS OF THE COURSE All of the following are considered errors and two points
will be deducted per error, but they are not cumulative
