Biography of Theinngu Sayadaw

Theinngu Sayadaw was born in 1912 in Hnawgone village. Hmawbi township,
Yangon division, Myanmar. He was named Aung Tun Although he was sent to
school during his child-hood he did not excel in his studies. He married at the age
of 16 and wad dealing in worldly affairs until he was 46.

While encountering the biography of the famous Sunlungu Sayadaw U Kawi
who attained Arahat-hood without knowing how to read or write. U Aung Tun
was excited to know that an illiterate person could become an Arahat. Pointing at
the photograph of the Sunlungu Sayadaw, he bravely announced that he would
try with zeal and effort to obtain the same result as Sunlungu Sayadaw.

In 1958 U Aung Tun Started to meditate at his native village. After 21 months of
intensive rigorously mediating, he attained supreme Arahat-hood.

From then, he toured the length and breadth of Myanmar preaching and teaching
his practical method of meditation. During the 11 years of his endeavor
preaching and teaching his practical method, he became well known with having
many followers of monks, nuns and people in general.

In 1973, he passed away extinguishing his cycle of life. Although he is no more,
his method of mediation is spreading not only through out the country, but even
abroad.

It was in 1966. A large crowd of people were sitting silently in the
Kemadyne Dhamma hall.

Only whispering to one another could be heard because they all were
eagerly waiting for the appearance of someone whom they had great respect and
from whom they were going to listen in valuable words of Dhamma.

There appeared “Theinngu Sayadaw” (tall and walking slowly and steadily
wearing dark brownish robe). Sayadaw came to sit on the golden thrown which
Buddhist people called “Palindaw”.

“Theinngu Sayadaw” had been well recognized by many Myanmar
Buddhist as Arahatta Puggala. That means that he has already gained wisdom to
realize the Paramattha Dhamma perfectly.
