Why are antidotes so expensive? First,
venom is taken from snakes. The venom
is then injected into sheep that produce
antibodies. Later, the antibodies are
extracted from the sheep to form the basis of
the anti-venom. In the case of CroFab, the
snake venom is extracted in America. It is

England where the anti-venom is developed.
It’s an expensive business.

a while he found them boring. He wanted to
do something different and experience a new
challenge. He decided to run from the city
of Vancouver in Canada to Buenos Aires in
Argentina, a distance of 16,538 kilometres.
The journey took him 472 days. 367 of
these were actually spent running; the others

– something he said he wore as a badge of
honour.
On some days he saw very few people and
he was often worried that he would become
lonely. When he felt like that, he would stop
and write some messages on his social media
page where his friends were able to reach
out and encourage him. Some parts of his
journey were very dangerous. Once, when he
was running in Peru, he had to be escorted
by the local police through a particularly
dangerous part of one town.
But many good things came out of Jamie’s
run. He was able to raise money for three
of his favourite charities. If you would like
to learn more about Jamie and his chosen

Here are some fast facts about Jamie’s
journey:
• He wore out 17 pairs of trainers
• He burnt about 6,000 calories each day
• He ran across 14 different countries
• He ran across two different continents
Each morning before he started running,
Jamie would look at the map and decide
where he would sleep. Sometimes he was able
to stay in cheap hotels, but often he had to
sleep in the tent he carried in his pram. On
one occasion, he went for 12 nights without

The Flying LOCOMOTIVE
Scotsman
Returns Definition: A powered vehicle used
to pull trains
For train enthusiasts, it was a happy
day on the 8th January when one of the
world’s most famous locomotives made
a public appearance following a ten-year
refit. We’re talking about the Flying Scotsman
that was once the fastest train in England,
pulling thousands of passengers the 630
kilometres between London and Edinburgh,
the capital cities of England and Scotland.
The first train service to run between
London and Scotland began in 1862 and
20 TYPHOON CLUB MARCH/2016
steam locomotives pulled the trains in those Photos courtesy National Railway Museum
days. The service was known as The Flying
Scotsman. The journey took ten hours and
thirty minutes which included a thirty minute
stop for lunch half way through the journey.
Over the years and with the improvement
of the steam engines, the journey time was
reduced to eight hours and thirty minutes.
A new locomotive was built in 1923 and
it was named after the service, The Flying
Scotsman. It was a very special train and
offered a number of services to its passengers.
It had a cinema car. It also had a hairdresser
on board! The Flying Scotsman became a
‘must see’ for train spotters that waited along
the railway line each day to watch her fly past.
In 1934, the Flying Scotsman became the
first passenger train to reach 100 miles per
hour (160.9 kilometres). She was the fastest
train in the world.
The Flying Scotsman was in operation until
1963 when diesel engines began replacing the
old steam locomotives. From then, it was a
bit of a bumpy journey with promotion trips
around the world that, while unsuccessful,
still bankrupted at least one train enthusiast.
Finally, she was bought by the National
Railway Museum in 2006 and for the past ten
years, she has been patiently renovated.
Many enthusiasts who watched the Flying
Scotsman in January were asking why the
engine was painted in black rather than its
original apple green colour. She was painted
black during World War II – like all other
trains – to try and hide her from enemy
planes. She will return to her original colour
later this year when she goes on public
display in the Museum.
