AVENUES OF SERVICE

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of
Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

CLUB SERVICE focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong
relationships and an active membership development plan.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their
expertise to the problems and needs of society.

COMMUNITY SERVICE encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of
life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and
understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on
international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.

YOUTH SERVICE recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young
professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact,
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

AREAS OF FOCUS

PROMOTING PEACE Filipinos in the hundreds of thousand are displaced by armed
conflict or persecution. We develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local
leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building in
areas affected by conflict.

FIGHTING DISEASE Millions of Filipinos are pushed deeper into poverty because of
medical costs. We aim to improve and expand access to low-cost and free health
care in our community. We educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the
spread of major diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and dengue.

PROVIDING CLEAN WATER In Marikina and nearby areas, poor communities lack access
to adequate sanitation facilities. Our projects give communities the ability to develop
and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems.

SAVING MOTHERS AND CHILDREN In poor areas, children suffer malnutrition, poor health
care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide preventive care
to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health
care providers for mothers and their children. We empower the local community to
take ownership of health care training programs.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION There are thousands of children in our community with no
access to education. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to
support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and
increase adult literacy.

GROWING LOCAL ECONOMIES We still face grinding poverty in our communities. We carry
out service projects that enhance economic and community development and
develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help
strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in
impoverished communities.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

World Class President Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ Garcia

Hilltop turned up in strength last 16 November during the
Zone Interclub meeting at Kapitan Moy. Present were
seventeen (17) Hilltoppers, including Spouse Mayleen. We were easily the most
represented club, and if there were a prize for it, we would have bagged it. It is a
source of pride for me that our club stood out in that Zone Intercity meeting.
Thanks, Hilltoppers, for the support!

The invited speaker Chinkee Tan in that meeting stirred interest in the ways to
make your money grow. This makes me think that we can have a follow-up talk
here in the club on the same subject of fund management/investment sometime
early December.

The Annual Giving Night last Saturday, 21 November, also gives reason for
Hilltoppers to stand tall. We were recognized for our Club’s EREY standing and for
the generous contributions to The Rotary Foundation by PP Celso Montalla, who
was cited as a Paul Harris Society member. These were accomplished during
Rotary Year 2014-2015, the term of Immediate Past President Mario Legaspi.
Congratulations IPP Mario! You certainly worked hard for this distinction and
made the Club proud. Now, Hilltoppers, this should inspire us to equally work hard
for the continuing achievement of the Club in Annual TRF Giving. We can be an
EREY club again this year, with everyone’s cooperation and support.

Aside from taking up regular business, we meet tonight to celebrate with Past
President Ros Ramos and Spouse Mau their joint birthday celebration. Your co-
Hilltoppers extend to both of you their warm felicitations. Many more healthy and
happy years to you. Happy, happy Birthday! (Tonight by the way is the first of our
trial Thursday meetings. We will see if it works well enough over the trial period to
consider a permanent change. ) Meanwhile, take note of these dates:

27 November- Graduation of the 2nd Batch of the Alternative Care for The Elderly
program in Bgy Namayan, Mandaluyong City. If we can get several, say five of us
to come, that is good.

28 November- The wedding of PP Celso’s and Spouse Meg’s daughter Claudine
and Brendan Whyte at 2:30 pm at Madre de Dios Chapel, Tagaytay Highlands.
Cocktails and dinner follow after at the Midlands Veranda. Celso and Meg ask the
honor of each Hilltopper’s presence on this special occasion.

Have a fun night, folks!

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Secretary/President Elect Viktor “Vik” Varua

Success vs. Succession: Are club achievements hindering club
continuity?

"Hilltop? Club yan ng mga mayayaman"

Shortly after last Saturday's The Rotary Foundation (TRF) banquet, where Hilltop
was recognized as an EREY club and Past President Celso Montalla as Paul Harris
Society member, three gentlemen club members and a spouse shot the breeze in
an al fresco bar skirting the Marikina Convention Center, this year’s venue for TRF
awards. Past President Chuck, President Rudy and President Elect Vik enjoyed a
smoke and the acoustic performer while basking in the glory of Hilltop's success.

"Vik, your term will be the major beneficiary of our membership overhaul" begins
Pres. Rudy referring to the recent surgical excision of 6 no longer participating
members. "The opportunity to build membership will be my term's gift."

"Let's improve on our past tactics" interjects Chuck. "We have to apply method to
our membership development. Let us recruit using our toolkit and attract members
who will embody Rotary values by going through the stages of Commitment 
Conviction  Conversion."

Pres. Rudy agreed and said "the process of Rotarization is important otherwise the
recruit will merely be a passing statistic.”

Vik volunteers an issue long in his mind: "What about family members? "Pressure
is a two-bladed sword for the filial recruit, Vik" interrupts Chuck. They may not feel
as free to establish themselves in the club since there are deep pre-existing
relationships to many senior members."

"That's right, I imagine there is an element of awkwardness every time one attends
club meetings and you have to make 'mano' to half the members." continues Rudy.

"There must be a solution," Vik plods on. "Tapping the next generation is an
obvious mechanism for club continuity and succession."

"Well perhaps Charter Member Ros can provide input in this coming Thursday's
meeting cum joint birthday celebration. I understand that he has a son-in-law who
will announce acceptance of club leadership as a birthday present..."

To be continued.

TRUSTEE CHAIR’S MESSAGE

NOVEMBER 2015

It is well-established that The Rotary Foundation is the focus of attention in the
month of November, and we try our best to publicize our Foundation programs and
to raise money to fund the programs during the entire month! But why November?

The idea started in May 1956 when the RI Board designated the week of 15

9 Be a Gift to the World Vol. 27 No. 17-18

November as Rotary Foundation Week. The designation was firmly in place by
1961 when I was a Rotary scholar in South Africa, and most of the southern
African clubs featured programs about the Foundation that week. I also observed
the same focus when I returned home and joined the Rotary club in my hometown
of Unionville, Mo.

Many of our clubs at that time scheduled low-cost meals at their meetings during
Rotary Foundation Week and donated the savings to the Foundation. It was a
good way to produce Foundation funds at a time when most contributions were
still made by clubs, not by individual Rotarians. But why did the RI Board select the
week of 15 November in 1956 and then expand it in 1982 to the whole month of
November, starting in 1983-84?

My speculation is that the initial decision in 1956 was based on the realization
that many clubs in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly the large clubs, were not
fully active during their summer months of June, July, and August. Therefore, it
was best to wait and give time for the clubs to educate their members each year
about the Foundation. And since the Foundation contributions were coming from
the clubs, it gave the clubs time to raise the money, but still send it to the
Foundation in the first half of the Rotary year for investment purposes. It was a
win-win situation for both the clubs and the Foundation!

Regardless of whether my speculation has merit, Rotary Foundation Month has
been, and will continue to be, a critical factor in the success of our Foundation. It
is the month that our clubs and districts continue the tradition of educating our
Rotarians about the amazing quality of our Foundation programs and seeking the
needed contributions to make the world a better place.

Our Foundation is a premier organization, and it owes its success to the support of
Rotarians, many of whom have gained their appreciation of Foundation programs
during the traditional emphasis on such programs in November. The importance
of Rotary Foundation Month should not be discounted, and I hope that all of our
clubs will feature the Foundation during the month of November. It is a significant
and productive tradition, and I encourage all Rotarians to take the time to attend
their club and district Foundation events this month. Embrace the tradition!
Celebrate the Foundation!

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
IS TURNING 100!

17 Be a Gift to the World Vol. 27 No. 17-18

Two young engineers applied for a single position at a
computer company. They both had the same
qualifications. In order to determine which individual to
hire, the applicants were asked to take a test by the
department manager.
Upon completion of the test, both men missed only one of the questions. The manager went
to the first applicant and said,
“Thank you for your interest, but we’ve decided to give the job to the other applicant.”

“And why would you be doing that? We both got 9 questions correct,” asked the rejected
applicant.

“We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed,”
said the Department manager.
“And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?” the rejected applicant
inquired.
“Simple,” said the department manager, “Your fellow applicant put down on question #5, ‘I
don’t know.’ You put down, ‘Neither do I.’”

A man stood on the side of the road hitch hiking on a very dark night in the middle of a
storm. The night was rolling and no cars passed. The storm was so strong, he could hardly
see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly he saw a car come towards him and stop.
The guy, without thinking about it, got in the car and closed the door only to realize that
nobody was behind the wheel. The car started moving slowly. The guy looked at the road
and saw a curve coming his way.
Scared, he started praying, and begged for his life. He hadn’t come out of shock, when just
before he hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and moved the wheel. The
guy, paralyzed in terror, watched how the hand appeared every time before a curve.

The guy gathered strength, got out of the car and ran to the nearest town. Wet and in shock,
he ran into a bar and asked for two shots of tequila, and started telling everybody about the
horrible experience he went through, crying as he went on.

About half an hour later, two guys walked into the same bar, one said to the other: “Look,
that’s the character who climbed into our car while we were pushing!”

RI District 3800, and the current Chairman of the Philippine College of Rotary Governors.
