INVOCATION
As Rotarians, we are generally blessed with lives of relative luxury, and opportunities
unknown to many. Help us to review our checkbooks, and, indeed, the registers of our lives
with honesty as we consider our priorities, and our opportunity to help others. Open our
hearts, and our accounts, to those in need, while still providing us with appropriate fruits of
our own labors. Help us to share not only our tangible wealth, but also our intangible riches
of knowledge, leadership, and creativity to make our our nation a better place. Amen.

SPECIAL OBSERVANCE FOR AUGUST:
AVENUES OF SERVICE
We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of
Service, which are the foundation of club activity.
CLUB SERVICE focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong
relationships and an active membership development plan.
VOCATIONAL SERVICE calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their
expertise to the problems and needs of society.
COMMUNITY SERVICE encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of
life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.
INTERNATIONAL SERVICE exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and
understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on
international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
YOUTH SERVICE recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young
professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact,
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.
AREAS OF FOCUS
PROMOTING PEACE Filipinos in the hundreds of thousand are displaced by armed
conflict or persecution. We develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local
leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building in
areas affected by conflict.
FIGHTING DISEASE Millions of Filipinos are pushed deeper into poverty because of
medical costs. We aim to improve and expand access to low-cost and free health
care in our community. We educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the
spread of major diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and dengue.
PROVIDING CLEAN WATER In Marikina and nearby areas, poor communities lack access
to adequate sanitation facilities. Our projects give communities the ability to develop
and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems.
SAVING MOTHERS AND CHILDREN In poor areas, children suffer malnutrition, poor health
care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide preventive care
to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health
care providers for mothers and their children. We empower the local community to
take ownership of health care training programs.
SUPPORTING EDUCATION There are thousands of children in our community with no
access to education. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to
support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and
increase adult literacy.
GROWING LOCAL ECONOMIES We still face grinding poverty in our communities. We carry
out service projects that enhance economic and community development and
develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help
strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in
impoverished communities.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
World Class President Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ Garcia
We have recently read about the death of Pamana, one of
the few monkey-eating eagles remaining in the wilds of our
country, mainly in Mindanao. This species, endemic to the country, had been
listed as an endangered species and thus is a primary concern for protection
and preservation by conservationists and mandated government agencies.
Sadly, the rest of us do not see much value in conservation. Pamana was felled
by a hunter’s air gun in an area declared as a heritage site, a protected habitat
where bird species and other wildlife can thrive and propagate. This is a big
blow to the cause of conservation, especially since Pamana was released into
the wilds only about two months ago, symbolically on Independence Day, after
being nursed back to health from two gunshot wounds suffered earlier.
Prof Reuel Molina Aguila, PhD, (his name resonates with his advocacy!) has
seen the beauty and unique character of wild birds through his camera lenses.
He is our featured speaker tonight. His photographs, shot in the wilds of our
country’s remaining forests, will usher us into the world of nature we seldom
see. Perhaps, after seeing these, we can think conservation. Then again, we
might be able to deplore Pamana’s demise. Warm welcome to our urban haunt
Professor!
On our other concerns in the Club, let me tick off first Secretary/ PE Vik’s call for
your personal attention in registering with MyRotary. He has done the
preliminary work, but you’ll have to complete the process by acknowledging the
registration (activate) and then logging in yourself to your account (use). This
will inform RI that you have used your account. Only then will you be counted in.
As of now, we are only 30.95% compliant. We have to hit at least 50%, and even
go for higher. If other clubs were able to do it, kaya din natin ‘to, mga ka-Hilltop!
Another important matter we are seriously looking at is our attendance rate. We
are hovering at just 44-50%. Our main focus is to get our long-missing
members, especially our young Rotarians, to re-engage with us. We are digging
deep in our “baul” of ideas to do it. If you have any ideas of your own, please
share them.
Enjoy our meeting everyone.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Secretary/President Elect Viktor “Vik” Varua
John G. Germ , President-Elect of Rotary International, visited
the Philippines last week. John met with his team at the Sofitel
Philippine Plaza, a team already titled 'All Star' and who will serve in Rotary Year
(RY) 2016-2017. A Rotarian for 40 years by the time he serves next year, John
addressed the crowd, passionately
speaking of how Rotary is an organization
that can lead the way in these challenging
times.
"Where trust in many institutions is eroding,
Rotary is an example of an institution that
exemplifies trustworthiness.
When Polio Plus started 37 years ago, there
were hundreds of thousands of cases of
Polio and thousands of fatalities
worldwide. Today there are 35 recorded
cases.
Bill Gates chose to partner and grant
Rotary with USD$200M for Polio Plus when he could have chosen to give to the
WHO or UN instead. Trustworthy."
I appeal to all Hilltoppers: please help our club to comply with the requirement that
all members must register at myRotary.org. I have done my part: all of our 46 club
members are now registered in myRotary. Each account was acknowledged by
Rotary International.
It appears however that Vol. 27 No. 06
the metric for compliance
is 'usage' as defined by
activation. This means
that each member has to
log in to their email
account and acknowledge
the registration and THEN
log in with their own email
and password.

Even if I could perform the compliance for each and everyone, it would be
impossible for me to do so with out breaking the law and hacking onto each and
everyone's registered email like Benjamin Dunn, played by Simon Pegg, does in the
latest Mission Impossible instalment.
For example, here is Louie Rivera’s
myRotary account completely
setup by a proxy- me.
Please everyone, this is not
impossible. Go check your email
accounts and log in to your myRotary accounts sent by the registration process.
How much longer will we be stuck
at the bottom in the campaign to
register at myRotary?
In today's club meeting we will be featuring Dr. Reuel Molina Aguila to
speak on bird watching and photography.
Thank you PP Chuck for arranging and giving life to our club Topic Speaker
Segment. We started with the talk on Medical Cannabis and now move into
Ornithography.
In anticipation of a successful talk we will be following up Dr. Aguila's
discourse in a future session with Dr. de Leon's lecture on a related topic:

How Rotary Began
Paul Harris reveals the origin of Rotary in an interview with Leland Childs of
WSFA, an affiliate of NBC, a radio commentator from Montgomery, Alabama,
on 20 December 1945. Here’s the relevant transcript of the interview.
LELAND CHILDS: “It is certainly amazing, Mr. Harris, that an
organization which is so young in years could have encircled the
world and fired the imagination of men of so many nationalities,
languages, and economic, political, and religious concepts. To help
all get a clear picture of Rotary let's begin at the beginning. Tell me
just how it was that you came to organize the first Rotary Club?"
PAUL HARRIS: "Well, Mr. Childs, that's a question I have been called on to answer a great
many times! Following my studies with Princeton University and at the universities of
Vermont and Iowa, I spent the next five years in traveling about the world working as a
newspaper reporter, a teacher, and a salesman for a marble and granite concern in various
parts of the United States, and I made several trips to Europe. The experiences of these five
years enabled me to get a clearer insight of my fellowmen and broadened my vision. In
1896 after my period of wandering was over, I settled down in Chicago to practice law."
LELAND CHILDS: "Was that when you first decided to organize the Rotary Club, Mr. Harris?"
PAUL HARRIS: "Yes, it was. But it actually took me several years to formulate the idea in my
own mind. I first conceived the idea which developed into the Rotary movement back in
1900, when after dinner in the Chicago home of a lawyer friend, I took a walk with him
through the residential neighborhood. He stopped at the road stands along the way, and I
was impressed by the fact that the proprietors were all friends of my lawyer acquaintance. I
had come to Chicago four years prior to that time, but my clients were merely business
friends, not social friends. This experience set me to wondering why I couldn't make social
friends out of at least some of my business friends, and I resolved to organize the club.
Talking the matter over with three of my law clients, Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant,
Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Harry Ruggles, a printer, I decided it then to
organize a club about which I had been thinking for four or five years."
LELAND CHILDS, "I've often wondered, Mr. Harris, where did you get the name Rotary for
your organization?"
PAUL HARRIS: "This new club was called Rotary because in the early days the members
met in rotation in their various places of business so that they might come to know one
another better."
LELAND CHILDS: "And when did the idea of weekly luncheon meetings originate?"
PAUL HARRIS: "The idea of the Rotary Club soon met with general approval and the club
membership grew rapidly. Almost every member had come to Chicago from a small town
and in the Rotary Club they found an opportunity for the intimate acquaintanceship of their
boyhood days. Because of the growth of the club, the membership became too large to
meet in the places of business, and the members of the club began to meet instead once a
week around the luncheon table.”

A drunk man got in a taxi cab to be driven home
after a night on the town. They were about to
turn a corner, but had to wait for the light.
The taxi cab driver wasn’t sure his blinkers were
working so he asked the man "will you look out
the window and make sure my blinkers are working?"
As requested, the man stuck his head out the window and responded
"yes, no, yes, no, yes, no..."
The Darwinian vs. God Contest
One day a group of Darwinian scientists got together and decided that man had
come a long way and no longer needed God.
So they picked one Darwinian to go and tell Him that they were done with Him.
The Darwinian walked up to God and said,
"God, we've decided that we no longer need you. We're to the point that we can
clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don't you just go on and get
lost."
God listened very patiently and kindly to the man. After the Darwinian was done
talking, God said,
"Very well, how about this? Let's say we have a man-making contest."
To which the Darwinian happily agreed.
God added, "Now, we're going to do this just like I did back in the old days with
Adam."
The Darwinian said, "Sure, no problem," and bent down and grabbed himself a
handful of dirt.
God looked at him and said, "No, no, no. You go get your own dirt!"
A circus owner walked into a bar to see everyone crowded about a table watching
a little show.
On the table was an upside down pot and a duck tap dancing on it. The circus
owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner. After
some wheeling and dealing, they settled for $10,000 for the duck and the pot.
Three days later the circus owner runs back to the bar in anger,
"Your duck is a ripoff! I put him on the pot before a whole audience, and he didn't
dance a single step!"
"So?" asked the duck’s former owner, "did you remember to light the candle under
the pot?"
