2020…wow, what a year! While the coronavirus pandemic
certainly has made an impact, to one degree or another, on all
of our lives, we here in Southwest Indiana have done our best to
adapt and learn how to deal with the “new normal.”
Each year, Keep It Local allows us to take a peek into our
community to see how we continue to grow and prosper
collectively. This year’s edition shows how, even with the added
burden of COVID-19, our corner of the state still finds many
different ways in which to shine.
We have always had several community groups that make
sure quality food is available for those in need, but with many
new challenges, including more people who are in need of
those services, these groups have had to find a way to fulfill
their missions by Bringing People to the Table (page 10). We
also focus on seven area businesses that have found out how
stay resilient and successful during a worldwide pandemic by
Turning Adversity Into Opportunity (page 20).
Meanwhile, business as usual continues for our region’s
development, with Regional Cities winding down, highlighted
by this summer’s ribbon-cutting of the initiative’s centerpiece,
The Post House. Growth continues with a new Deaconess
Downtown Clinic; the massive redevelopment of the former
Old National Bank building, to be known as 5th & Main; and
plenty more, from new restaurants to a new home for LST-325.

collaboration with students and faculty from the Stone Family Center
for Health Sciences.”

The project was in part funded by $9 million through the Regional
Cities Initiative, noted Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger.

“The new Deaconess Clinic Downtown, together with the IU
School of Medicine-Evansville’s embedded clinical research space,
in combination with the adjacent Stone Family Center for Health
Sciences, will serve to attract top medical talent and investment
in the future of southwest Indiana’s workforce,” Schellinger said.
“The city of Evansville and the entire region are gaining a vibrant
destination where students, researchers and health care professionals
can connect, collaborate and work to create a stronger and healthier

Elaine Bedel, president of the Indiana Economic Development
Corporation, noted that “by investing in quality-of-place initiatives”

For a large number of Southern Indiana
families, the pandemic has affected the
most basic of human needs. “What’s for
dinner?” is a phrase that’s heard every day in
households far and wide. But when folks are
struggling to make ends meet on a normal
basis, and then a pandemic arrives and the entire world
is changed, that phrase can bring on new levels of
hardship and stress.
A lack of food security—having reliable access to
affordable, nutritious food—is something that many in
our community have had to face amid the coronavirus
outbreak.
As our area has worked together to address a
number of pandemic-related issues, Evansville mayor
Lloyd Winnecke has described our community as “a
city full of grace, charity, kindness, compassion, and a
profound sense of humanity.” Nowhere can this be seen
more clearly than with the groups coming together to
make sure ALL of our citizens have a consistent supply
of healthy food.
Following are just a few of the many organizations
who are working to provide nourishment in a
pragmatic and compassionate way. They—and
others—reflect the very best of Southern Indiana.

The 10-acre farm produces 60 to 70 different crops a year and
promotes sustainable use of the land. Fruits, vegetables, herbs—farm
manager Joe Schalasky’s list of crops is as extensive as his knowledge of
agriculture. In addition to the traditional harvesting of food from fields,
a hydroponic (food grown in water instead of soil) greenhouse was
opened at the farm in 2018 and has allowed for year-round production
of certain types of produce.
“We donate 25% of what we harvest to local food banks, homeless
shelters and church pantries,” explains Julie Deitz, community outreach
manager. Since it began in 2006, the farm has donated over 130,000
pounds of produce in Southern Indiana. The pandemic has brought
additional attention to food access in our local area, and Seton Harvest
has boosted its donation efforts. Schalasky (also known as “Farmer
Joe”) says that at least four food pantries are being provided with fresh
produce at the current time, and donors have purchased shares of Seton
Harvest’s crops for use by needy families. In addition, Seton Harvest is
sponsoring a free food giveaway at a local church on Sunday afternoons.

Moving forward, Mallery hopes that Urban Seeds can build
on the rapport they’ve developed with local organizations and
individuals. “There is a misconception that eating well takes too
much time and costs too much money,” she says. “We fully intend
to move forward and continue outreach that allows us to teach

Key players began strategizing and collaborating on a blueprint
for moving forward. Once all of the information was gathered, a

“We identified gaps and found organizations to fill in those gaps,”
says Vaughan. Feed Evansville began with grab-and-go meals, but

pandemic.
The first place people usually cut back on household expenses is
with food, according to Vaughan. And considering that the poverty
rate for Vanderburgh County residents is estimated at 15.1%, food
insecurity is a very real concern. The fact that many food pantries
were forced to close amid coronavirus concerns presented another
obstacle for many families.
As this article goes to print, current undertakings for Feed
Evansville include weekly food and dairy box pickups at Hartke
Pool for anyone who needs them, providing food boxes to non-
profit agencies that cater to the underserved, food backpack
deliveries to low-income areas of the city, low-cost grocery items,
and assistance to nearby towns who have reached out to the group
for help in developing their own food systems. Plus, Vaughan,
Burton and other key players receive phone calls and emails daily
from individuals in our area who have unique difficulties (for
example, lack of transportation to a food pickup station, a disability

who created the concept for fast-made, specialty pizzas while a student

professors so much, he encouraged Niemeier to enter it into a campus-

“It fits with my passion. I like making food for people,” said Niemeier,
who as a walk-on player on the Purdue football team would often have
teammates over to his place for a pizza night. “It lined up so well with
that. It’s all about the personal nature of it.”

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism
management in 2012, Niemeier spent the next two years researching
and developing the right business model for launching a real-life
version of his college concept. Two years later, he opened his first Azzip
Pizza restaurant on Pearl Drive on Evansville’s West Side, and things
quickly took off after that.

Azzip was named “Best Restaurant Opened in 2014” by Evansville Living
magazine and has been chosen as the Gold Winner of the Evansville
Courier & Press Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Place for Pizza.” He
has opened nine other locations since then (including two others in
Evansville), with the most recent being in Greenwood, IN, just south of
Indianapolis, in June.

“From the beginning I thought it was a good idea I could pull off, not
just something to do to get a grade,” Niemeier said.

Niemeier credits family and friends for helping him achieve Azzip’s
success. His parents and siblings have worked in various capacities for
the company, and his mom, Laura, gets credit for coming up with the
name: “When she said, why not make it ‘pizza’ spelled backward, it all
made sense, and it stuck,” he said. “It was a word that made no sense
and meant nothing, before this. At the time we opened, it was unused
and no trademark was issued for it. It’s amazing something so simple
wasn’t being used.”

Another major player in the pizzeria’s rise in popularity is chef Blake
Kollker, who came up with most of the ingredient combos and
monikers for their many regular menu items, including the West Sider
(or E’vil Pig), the Potato Head and the Italian Stallion, as well as popular
pizzas-of-the-month, such as March Crabness. Upon entering Azzip,
customers speak directly to their pizza makers, who then make the
pie in front of the customer before it is baked in a conveyor belt oven
that cooks it to perfection in a little over two minutes. Gluten-free and
vegetarian options are also available.

Brother Andy, who is co-CEO with Brad, said the company in 2015
started a give-back program for local nonprofits and charities, and as
of mid-July Azzip had given out around $210,000 to the community.
They revamped the program and in September rolled out Azzip’s Pot of
Dough, which will be giving back in several different ways.

Brad said everyone from his family to team members at all of Azzip’s
location have “helped make this dream a reality, I’m really blessed that
all of them have bought into this crazy idea I had.

“Nowadays, I pitch in wherever I can and hope not to screw it up.”

A PROMISE DELIVERED

Officials say Regional Cities — a funding program set up by the state
in 2014 — has more than delivered on its promise. Area leaders wisely
selected the projects that would help improve the allure of Southwest
Indiana and increase the quality of life here. In addition to bettering
things for residents, it was also hoped to be a means to retain and
attract talented individuals to the region.

The Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority manages the
program and oversees the progress of each project. Astute decision
making continued through to the Authority, which helped leverage
the initial $42 million from the state into a total of $932 million
in investments (through public and private dollars) to ensure the
completion of the projects.

Morgan Lemond Entwined Wine and Cocktail Bar

Jill Marshall Morgan Lemond, co-owner of Entwined Wine & Cocktail Bar, spent countless hours developing, designing
Narda Jones and planning the concept for a unique wine and dine experience in downtown Evansville. Morgan put
thought into every aspect of the restaurant, so much so that each cocktail on the menu has a story behind it.
Entwined first opened its doors serving craft cocktails, international tapas and over 30 types of wine in late
February. What wasn’t planned? A world-wide pandemic three weeks after opening.

A forced shutdown so shortly after starting could have been disastrous and disheartening to some business
owners, but Morgan remained positive and concentrated on what he could do instead of what he couldn’t.
During the downtime, Morgan continued working to build his business by staying active on social media
and offering wine delivery. His staff created educational videos on mixing at-home cocktails and choosing
the perfect wine. Entwined added outdoor seating to supplement their beautiful indoor lounge. Based on
the learnings during the pandemic, Entwined is looking forward to offering cocktail-making and cooking
classes in the future. When they are able to utilize 100% of their capacity, Morgan plans to host a memorable
grand opening!

JC Michaelson Consulting

April Nelson and Jill Marshall, co-owners of JC Michaelson Consulting LLC, were anxious to see how
COVID-19 might impact their business. Before the pandemic, JC Michaelson conducted safety education
courses, CPR training and hearing tests for businesses. During the course of the pandemic, businesses
suddenly needed to modify or develop new health and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of their
employees. This is where JC Michaelson was able to step up and provide assistance.

Throughout the pandemic, the team assisted companies to evaluate, update and/or develop procedures,
such as correct utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE). They followed up by helping educate
employees to work within the guidelines of those procedures. For businesses that were seeing downtime
or decreased production, they offered health and safety training that could be completed using interactive
online training platforms.

As we wonder what the “new normal” will be for our community, the team at JC Michaelson works to help
businesses ensure their employees remain healthy and safe. The way they like to think of it, they have helped
the community become safer, one business at a time.

North Main Annex Gourmet
Catering and Deli

Narda Jones, owner of North Main Annex Gourmet Catering and Deli, fulfilled her dream of opening her own
restaurant in 2019. The deli is centered around a grab-and-go concept, which proved to be beneficial when
the pandemic hit. The catering business can provide food for 1 to 200 people for any type of event. Though
catering has declined because of the pandemic, the few events she has done have taken into consideration
individual packaging, minimal food presentation exposure, and masked servers.

Although Narda closed indoor seating when it was required by the state she continued her passion for
creating unique food options and utilized the quarantine time to rethink her business.

During the pandemic, Narda developed friendships with her customers, who have continued supporting
her small business. These dedicated customers kept Narda’s restaurant and passion for food alive by asking
for specific foods and meals. She has also created many dietary options for gluten-free and dairy-free
requirements. Even before her customers had food requests, Narda expanded her menu to provide pre-
ordered family meals and to-go casseroles. These new menu items were great for business! To counter the
lack of indoor seats, Narda added outdoor seating. She even got approval to provide alcoholic beverages for
both onsite consumption and retail sale. While the pandemic brought its challenges to North Main Annex,
Narda continues to do what she loves most and has affirmed that listening to her customers can really pay off.

T.R.U. Event Rental tent providing outdoor T.R.U. Event Rentals

Forefront Therapy Team Karen LeMond, co-owner of T.R.U. Event Rental Inc., expected the worst when the pandemic cancelled all
large events her business depends on. T.R.U. Event Rental provides everything for celebrations from tents to
tablecloths; it is a one-stop-shop for event supplies. When fundraisers, galas and weddings were cancelled,
Karen was forced to reevaluate how to run her business during these trying times.

The challenges initially presented by the pandemic brought T.R U. back to its roots. Karen and her husband
began their business in 1988 predominately renting tents for special occasions. While there were no
gatherings during the quarantine, Karen pivoted her business and provided tents for hospitals, such as St.
Vincent, for drive-thru COVID-19 testing. In addition to the pop-up medical facilities, restaurants showed a
great need for adding capacity by creating outdoor seating. As a result, T.R.U. has provided outdoor seating
canopies for numerous local restaurants. Karen has proven that when one opportunity vanishes, another
one “pops up”!

Forefront Therapy

Forefront Therapy, LLC is well-known in the Evansville area for innovative physical and occupational therapy,
providing customized care for each patient. Forefront Therapy focuses on assisting patients in managing
pain through therapy, not relying solely on prescriptions. In addition to one-on-one care, Forefront Therapy
provides various programs, such as orthopedics and pelvic health. The pandemic created quite a challenge
for Forefront. How do you continue to provide personal, customized care when most of your clients are not
able to visit the clinic?

Ryan Wood, owner and CEO of Forefront Therapy, altered his processes to include increased safety and
cleaning precautions for patients who could visit the clinic and added a Telehealth program for those
who were unable to leave their home. Through virtual appointments, Ryan and his team deliver at-home
therapy options that clients can perform themselves or with assistance. Ryan understands the importance
of continuity of care and knew that his patients would recover more quickly if they did not have to miss
therapy for weeks or months. The Forefront Therapy team has always had a passion for creating innovative
solutions for people in any circumstance. The pandemic compelled them to think creatively to solve issues
for patients without being in the same room. Although they were surprised how well they could help clients
virtually, Ryan and his team are grateful to welcome patients back at the clinic.

sports teams. With schools closed and sporting events cancelled, Rosie closed her storefront during the stay-
at-home order. After reopening and offering curbside service, Rosie brainstormed ways to keep her business

Rosie sold the shirts at Tri-State Printing and Embroidery and other local businesses to keep the community
strong during these difficult times. In addition to the popular “Support Local” shirts, Rosie promoted other
shirt designs for special occasions, like Mother’s Day and Nurse’s Day. Recently, Tri-State Printing is staying
busy providing shirts for Vincennes baseball teams. Rosie is a great example of small business owners who
look out for each other and for the resiliency of their entire community.

A dinosaur has
been on the move
in downtown Evansville

Millie, the 35-foot quartersaurus statue mascot of the Koch Family
Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe), has been relocated from her
longtime spot at 5th and Locust streets to Mickey’s Kingdom children’s
playground as part of a new attraction for area families.
When finished, Millie’s Downtown Dino Trail will begin at Mickey’s Kingdom
along the riverfront and wind through downtown Evansville until it ends at cMoe
at 22 SE Fifth St. Along the way there will be 12 pieces of interactive art that the
trail’s participants can take in, said Anne McKim, executive director of the Arts
Council of Southwestern Indiana.
“Interactive art can take many forms, such as artist-designed sculptural
benches, bike racks or murals that invite the public to pose for pictures,” said
McKim, who added that the Arts Council will issue an RFP (request for proposal)
to solicit ideas and proposals from regional artists. Winners will be selected by
the end of the year, and the trail is expected to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony in
June 2021.
“The project will encourage families to explore downtown Evansville through
physical exercise, play and the arts,” McKim said. “It will also showcase local family-
friendly merchants and eateries and will link cultural assets in the urban core.”
She also noted that anything interactive “is a huge thing with kids” and that is

The project is a collaboration between cMoe, the Arts Council and the
Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District. It will mostly be funded
through a $40,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Evansville.
