Project Overview

“Wartime Wanderers” is a major TV series based on the astounding true story
of the 1939 Bolton Wanderers football side who all signed up for the 53rd
Bolton Royal Artillery and went through the second world war together.

They saw action in France, were part of the rearguard at Dunkirk, fought in
North Africa and Italy and only lost one man during the whole six years.

Although there's a lot of action and some humour, a 15 year old Nat Lofthouse,
with Alma, then his girlfriend, provide some softer moments as he's taken on
by the club as a rising star.

Several well known actors are lined up for the series and we also have a
significant number of well-known names for Cameo roles. The main music
theme is written, Bolton Wanderers Football Club is supporting the project and
we have an endorsement from the Professional Footballers Association.

But this is not a football story.

It's a strong film about comradeship and battle during the second world war
and about the dedication shown by the people left at home - including that of
the manager that rebuilt the side around a young Nat.

Our crew has also been working on a supporting documentaries “The Team
That Went To War” - for which the BBC “Storyville” series has already
expressed interest – and a “Making of...” film.

There are also over 30 potential product placement opportunities for products
of the era whose name is still relevant, from Aspro to Oxo

With cast and crew keen to be involved in this dramatic and striking project
we're now ready to start work!

Directors Vision

“ The riveting true story of the “Wartime Wanderers” is about to come roaring to life. The series,
stretching out over an epic canvas to recount the tale of a band of brothers in sports, arms, and life,
will be a moving look at friendship, sacrifice, and heroism during wartime, both on the front and at
home.

I envision “Wartime Wanderers” as a study in constants and contrasts, moving from tight-knit
English villages to carnage-strewn battlefields, from kinetic football matches to tense showdowns
between fierce enemies. However, though the lens of the series is wide, the focus is intimate and
human-focused. At the heart of the narrative is the bond between the central football team who
enlist together to fight in World War II, defending England and the West from the unrelenting Nazi
scourge faced by the European powers. It’s a rousing, touching story, full of moments of visual
chaos and emotional clarity.

I could not be more thrilled to bring “Wartime Wanderers” into living rooms around the world, where
audiences are sure to respond to this enthralling journey.”

SERIES SYNOPSIS:

1939 - In front of a 23,000 strong crowd at Burnden Park, the Bolton Wanderers' captain, Harry
Goslin, gives a rousing speech before leading the entire team to the local Territorial Army drill hall
where they all sign up.

For the next six years, as gunners in the 53rd Field Regiment of the Bolton Artillery, they face some
of the heaviest fighting of the Second World War, in France, North Africa and Italy and they also
establish themselves as a formidable regimental football team throughout the theatre of war.

Of the full squad only one is killed in action - the remainder return home to their families and to their
football careers.

But this is much more than a war story and much more than a football story.

It's also the story of three individuals: Ray Westwood, who is already a football star; his inseparable
team mate, Ernie Forrest, whose ready wit carries them through in the face of adversity and Harry
Goslin their captain and leader. We also follow Nat Lofthouse who is still only a schoolboy when war
intervenes to link their destinies and start him on the road to football fame.

We also meet the women and girls in the live s of the team and follow Ray’s and Nat’s touching
love stories as the war shapes their futures.

This is the story of a team whose loyalty led them into a bloody world conflict - and whose
indomitable spirit enabled them to survive; it is about a legendary group of men who kept alive their
friendships, loyalties, values and convictions throughout the darkest of days.

The Episodes:

1. England in the 1930s, Bolton, Football in England, The Clubs, The FA, War looming
2. BWFC, Foweraker/NL/HG/RW/EF/others, their home and club life, The Club, HG Speech

6. England, Training, guesting around the UK
7. N Africa, Egypt
8. Iraq, Italy
9. Italy
10.The journey home, post war England, Home and families. Playing again.

Material for additional episodes for a13 part series would include:

The effects of the war on Bolton and football
Life in the army and comparison with celebrity life
The Grandees of the FA and Bolton Wanderers
Nat Lofthouse from School to Football
Nat Lofthouse's story at BWFC
Lofthouse - life in the mines

Much more available material was collected, but not included, in the book. It is planned that an
expanded book will be published to co-incide with the film. Random House has ceded control to the
original authors.

ABOUT THE WRITERS (BOOK)

The book “Wartime Wanderers” was originally written by Tim Purcell
and Mike Gething and published by Mainstream in 1996. Tim, with
Mike's agreement, then approached Jack Seddon and they jointly wrote
the screenplay. Jack Seddon wrote numerous television scripts including
for 'The Liver Birds', 'What a Carry On', 'Arthur of the Britons' and 'Oil
Strike North'. His film scripts include:

 The Longest Day  The Blue Max
 The Alphabet Murders  Murder Most Foul
 Murder She Said
Mike Gething

Tim Purcell originally heard the story of the ‘Wartime Wanderers’ from Mike Gething, news writer
and lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan. This would be the definitive football story to make the big screen.
It has everything. Football, war, romance, comedy, tragedy, loyalty and the amazing bravery of
ordinary men thrown into an extraordinary situation.

Mainstream Publishing agreed, and commissioned Mike and Tim to write
the book. The football club were only too willing to help and made
Burnden Park available to meet the few surviving Wartime Wanderers
players, their families, army buddies and friends.

Tim's experience includes writing for radio and television in Australia and a
the UK, scripting Soaps, Police and Medical shows. He has also written
and produced a number of commercials and promotional films, including Tim Purcell
for the World Bank. He is currently involved in development proposals for
new film studio in Mauritius.

Both are keen for these productions to go ahead.
