READING ACTIVITY

NARRATIVE TEXT

Narrative text can be considered as a reflection or an exploration of the author’s values told as a
story. A narrative tells a story and mainly used to entertain the readers. A narrative can also be used to
stimulate emotion or to teach.

A narrative text can have as many paragraphs as we want. However, it has mainly three parts,
which are the orientation, sequence of events/complications and the resolution.

1. Orientation
Orientation presents the setting of our story and also introduces the characters involved in the
text. This part of narrative text should be written well in order to attract as many readers as
possible.

2. Complications
The story continues here, which is the body. Usually, there will be an event or a sequence of
events/complications that lead the characters into a complication (some form of conflict that
disrupts the normal event). Tension starts to build up to a climax and this draws anticipation in
the reader.

3. Resolution
The story starts to get resolved and everything usually comes to happy end. Sometimes, there
may be a surprising twist of events that the readers hardly expect, while at the other times, the
resolution is left for the reader to decide.

Language features of Narrative text are :
1. Use the past tense.
2. Usually begin with adverb of time (kata keteranganwaktu) such as a long time ago, once upon a
time, or adverb of place (kata keterangantempat) such as in a far away land, in a very quiet
village.

3. Use the temporal conjunction such then, after that, before.

The purpose of Narrative text is to entertain the readers.

Narrative text may in form of fact or fiction. As a fact, narrative text can be in form of
Biography, Autobiography, or a story about someone’s experience. On the other hand, as a fiction,
narrative can be in form of Novel, Short Story, Long Story, Comics, Fairy Tale, Folk Tale, Legend,
Fable, and Myth.

Let’s study the example of narative text below!

Princess Merida
King Fergus and Queen Elinor ruled the kingdom of DunBroch in Scotland. They had three sons
and one daughter, the beautiful Princess Merida. All four children were mischievous!
Queen Elinor tried to teach Merida how to behave like a perfect princess. But Merida liked to slip away
from the palace to practice with her bow and arrow. She was a skilled archer.
One night, the queen announced that three clans were coming to visit. Each would present a suitor
to compete for Merida’s hand in marriage. Merida was horrified. “I won’t go through with it!” she
shouted. To Merida’s dismay, the suitors arrived as planned. Merida sat waiting on her throne for the
archery contest to begin. She knew she could handle a bow and arrow far better than the suitors could!
Once the suitors had taken their shots, Merida marched onto the field. The queen yelled for her to
stop, but Merida didn’t listen. She fired her arrows and hit each target dead center. She had won! Now
she wouldn’t have to marry anyone!

E. CONTOH

Trouble is a Friend

Lenka

Trouble will find you no mater where you go, oh oh
No Matter if you're fast no matter if you're slow, oh oh

The eye of the storm and the cry in the morn, oh oh
Your fine for a while but then start to loose control

He's there in the dark
He's there in my heart
He waits in the winds
He's gotta play a part

Trouble is a friend
Yeah trouble is a friend of mine. oh oh

Trouble is a friend but trouble is a foe, oh oh

And no matter what I feed him he always seems to grow, oh oh
He sees what I see and he knows what I know, oh oh
So don't forget as you ease on down the road

So don't be alarmed if he takes you by the arm
I won't let him win, but I'm a sucker for his charm

Trouble is a friend
Yeah trouble is a friend of mine, oh oh

Oh how I hate the way he makes me feel
And how I try to make him leave, I try

Oh Oh I try
