Preface and Acknowledgment
First of all, let’s thanks to God Allah SWT the almighty. Just because the help of Allah, the
writer has finished written the English Materials entitled “It’s English Time” right in the calculated
time. The purpose in writing this English Materials is to This module is one of the supporting tools in
learning English materials for students at the 8 grade of the Second Semester in SMPN2 Meral Barat.
In arranging this material, the writer trully get lots challenges and obstructions but with the
help of many friends and also the headmaster, those obstructions could be passed. The writer also
realized that there are still many mistakes in process of writing this material. Because of that, the
writer said thank you to all friends who have helped in the process of writing this material. Hopefully
Allah SWT replies all helps and bless you all. The writer realized that this material still imperfect in
arrangement and also content. Then the writer hoped the criticism from the readers can help the writer
in fulfilling the next materials. The last but not the least hopefully, this material will help the students
to learn better about these four expressions; asking and giving opinion, checking the understanding,
showing appreciation/ compliments, asking and giving opinions. The writer also hoped that the reader
can gain more knowledge about these four expressions.

LEARNING MATERIAL
A. Definition (Pengertian)
Recount text is a text that telling the reader about one story, action or activity. Recount text
retells event
orexperiencesinthepast.Recounttextusuallyusedinwritingjournal,diary,personalletter,biography/
autobiography,history, etc.
B. Social Function(Fungsi Sosial)
The social function or the purpose of recount text is to retell past events or experiences in a
chronological order.
C. Generic Structure(Struktur Teks)
- An orientation that gives the listener or reader information about the time, the place and those
involved.
- A Series of events recounted as they happened.
- A conclusion/reorientation that gives the writer’s own view to the events and the feelings that
were aroused at the time.
D. Language Features (Unsur Kebahasaan)
- Using first or third person point of view
- written in past tense
- using time sequences(last month,yesterday,etc.)
- using conjunctions, such as: then, before, after,
- Action verb (Action verb press an action whether it be physical or mental. An action verb
explains what the subject of the sentence is doing or has done)

secara pribadi.

Teks ini digunakan untuk mencatat rincian dan fakta dari peristiwa tertentu yang belum tentu
melibatkan pembicara atau penulis
- Imaginative recounts
Teks ini digunakan oleh penulis untuk menceritakan kembali atau membuat ulang
cerita,pengalaman,atau peristiwa dan membuat peran khayalan saat dia menggambarkan
peristiwa tersebut.

Visiting Grandmother’sHome
[Orientation]
The last holiday I went to my grandma’s home.
Her home is quite awesome, so far away from the city and close to the vegetables farm area.
My grandma and grandpa are farmers.
I spent two days there and I did so many interesting things in the farm,helping my grandpa
planted vegetables.
[Events]
At the first day ,I learned to plant spinach. What I did was moving out the young spinach from
these e ding area to the plantation area.
I thought it was easy, but in fact, it was tiring. I had to move those one by one under the sun.I
did that for several hours before launch and continued until afternoon.
In the night, i didn’t want anything except sleeping. I was really tired but it was fun.
I couldn’t wakeup in the morning until my grandma knocked at my door. He laughed at me
because what I did was not hard actually if compared with the real farmer.
Then, before we went to the farm again, my grandma had prepared for breakfast. After
eating I follow my grandpa going to the next field.
We would do daily treatment for the 1 month age spinach. We had to give the enough water
and checked if there were any caterpillars and grasshoppers.

HolidaytoBeach
[Orientation]
Thelast holiday, Iwent tothe city ofPacitan withsomeof myfriends. Wewouldstay somenightat
theunknownbeachbecausewewouldliketo try theexperienceof being intothewild.
Wehadprepared everything.
[Events]
Wewent therebymotorcycle. That vehiclewaseasierforus topass any kindof road to goto someof
theunknownbeach along the south side of Pacitan city. We rode slowly and sometimes stopped
for several minutes to enjoy thelandscape.
Finally,wearrivedatPacitan. We continuedto goto thesouth justtofindanybeach.
Whatwewantedtofind wasabeachwith no tourist thereand we foundit.Itwasabeautiful beachwith
nobody else exceptus.
We built our tents and prepared small branch for making small fire because we need it to cook.
I loved this beachbecause I got not only a beautiful place but also a great beach for fishing. I
did fishing and got a lot of fishes. Weroastedthose fishesat thefirewe’vemade.

Westayedat thatbeach fortwo nights.Wehad toget backhome becauseweran outof
food.Welovedthatjourneyandwewould back at thebeachnext holiday.

(3) Mr. Richard’s family
Orientation:
Mr.Richard’s family was on vacation. They are Mr. And Mrs. Richard with two sons. They
went to London. They saw their travel agent and booked their tickets. They went to the British
Ebassy to get visas to enter Britain. They had booked fourteen days tour. This includes travel
and accomodation. They also included tours around London. They boarded a large Boeing
flight. The flight was nearly fourteen hours.
Event 1:
On the plane, the cabin crews were very friendly. They gave them newspaper and magazine
to read. They gave them food and drink. There was a film for their entertainment. They had a
very pleasant flight. They slept part of the way.
Event 2:
On arrival at Heathrow Airport, they had to go to Customs and Immigration. The officers
were pleasant. They checked the document carefully but their manners were very polite. Mr.
Richard and his family collected their bags and went to London Welcome Desk. They
arranged the transfer to a hotel. The hotel was a well-known four-star hotel. The room had
perfect view of the park. The room had its own bathroom and toilet. Instead of the keys for
the room, they inserted a key-card to open the door. On the third floor, there was a restaurant
serving Asian and European food. They had variety of food.
Reorientation:
The two week in London went by fast. At the end of the 14-day, they were quite tired but they
felt very happy.
(4) Camping with My Family
Orientation :
The weather was very clear. My family and I decided to go camping last holiday.
Events:
Father prepared the tent and other equipment. Mother prepared the cooking and eating
utensils. I took my fishing rod and my brother brought his sport equipment. When everything
was ready, we left for the camping site in countryside.There were many campers when we
arrived at the camping site. Unfortunately, the good location near the river had been occupied
by other campers so we had to look for another place. Finally, we found a good place little bit
further. It was near a big tree. After setting up the tent, my father and I went fishing. We
joined other people sitting on the rock near the river.In the evening, father made a fire. Mother
cooked the fish we caught. I could say that it was the best fish I had ever tasted.
Reorientation:
Sleeping in the tent was a very wonderful experience. I woke up early in the morning. I felt
fresh. Then I accompanied my brother playing ball.
In the afternoon, we went back home.
My Last Holiday
My last holiday was a five-day trip to Lagoi Bay Bintan Resort. I know Lagoi well because
I lived there when I was at University, more than ten years ago.
Instead of staying in a hotel, I stayed with one of my old friends. It was so much fun, and a
little bit like my old life. I wanted to do all the same things I did in my university days, so I
visited the university. It has changed a lot and looks more modern. I also went to the
supermarket near my old house. I loved seeing all the different foods. I was really happy to find
my favourite cheese and chocolate biscuits but they were a bit more expensive than I
remember!
We did some touristy things too. We walked up beautiful Lagoi Hill and around the Beach.
The views of the city are amazing up there. We walked across the Bintan Bridge. My friend’s
flat is very near the TV Tower so we saw the famous baby statues climbing up it.
Those things haven’t changed, of course. I enjoyed the time in Lagoi Bay Bintan Resort.
My Study Trip
This was the first time that I spent time with a Batam family, which I learned a lot from
them. They treated me like a family member, they took me out to eat, to play and to see all the
different interesting culture of their region. On Christmas Day, they even bought me some
presents to celebrate the Christmas . During my studies in the Batam, I lived with few other
students from different countries.They are very nice and we used to cook on our own, just like
a big family. After I came back Karimun, I still keep in touch with all my friends in the
Batam, from different countries like Singapore, Malaysia, philippines, Batam and other
countries. I really enjoyed the time in the Batam. I hope you will also have the chance to
explore more in other different countries in the future.

A. PENGERTIAN
Song is a composition of tone or voice in sequence, combination and
temporal relation to produse a musical compositian that has unity and
continuity.

B. TUJUAN
Songs are used to express feeling and idea in an entertaining world.
Songs can be used to deliver social criticism. The moral values are hidden
in the lyrics.
Lagumerupakan salah satucarauntukmengekspresikanemosi dan
perasaandengancara yang menyenangkan. Lagu juga dapatmenjadi media
untukmenyampaikankritikantentangsituasi yang ada di masyarakat. Moral
value atauamanatbiasanyatersiratdalamlirik yang dibuatpenulislagu.
C. CIRI KEBAHASAAN
Song ataulagu juga punya cirikebahasaan, lho! Nah,
berikutcirikebahasaandari song.
Imagery. Imagery describes about feelings and
emotions. Sebuahlagubiasanyaberusahamenggambarkanperasaan yang
dirasakansipenulis.
Rhythm. Ritmedisinidigunakanuntukmenciptakan mood. Misalnya,
apabilakitasedangbersedih dan mendengarkanlagudenganritme slow,
makakitaakanterbawasuasanadenganlagutersebut. So, rhythm creates
mood!

Good day everyone! Welcome to English teaching material for Junior High School
(SMP) grade 8 semester 2. This time we will learn about asking and giving
information related to what is happening on students’ or our surrounding. So the
sentences that are formed are dealing with present continuous tense or present
progressive tense.
Present continuous tense or present progressive tense indicates that an action or a
condition that is happening now, frequently and may continue in the future. We can
also say that the action is in progress at the time being.

Many students have difficulty in understanding how, when and what for the present
continuous tense or present progressive tense is used. So, this learning material try to
help teacher a bit on how teaching this matter to students in a fun way.

What is present continuous tense or present progressive tense?
The present continuous tense is also called present progressive tense. It is a verb
form that explains an ongoing action is happening right in time the speaker says
the sentence. It also indicates that we are in the process of doing a longer action
which is in progress. Betty Schrampfer Azar explained that Present Continuous
Tense is one of tenses which give the idea that an action is in progress during
particular time.
b. Social Function
There are some functions of Present Continuous tense, they are:
To express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment. It
can also be used to show that something is not happening now
To say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in
progress
To indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future

Some verbs which refer to state, we call it ‘Stative Verbs’ are not commonly
used in present continuous tense. Stative verbs usually refer to our emotions,
beliefs, ideas, reactions etc.
Those verbs are:
Believe, doubt, feel, imagine, know, dislike, love,
Mental/Emotional hate, prefer, realise, recognise, remember, see,
suppose, think, understand, want, wish
Senses Appear, hear, look, see, seem, smell, taste
Communicating and Agree, deny, impress, please, satisfy, astonish,
causing reactions disagree, mean, promise, surprise
Opinion Assume, believe, consider, doubt, feel (= to
think), find (= to consider), suppose, think
But we as people who learn English as a foreign language often get confused
with this matter, because even natives speakers break them often.
Adverbs of Time
Present Continuous tense usually uses adverbs of time as follow:

Etc. Etc.
Note: We usually put the adverb of time in the last part of the sentence, but
sometimes it can be placed in the beginning of the sentence.
