Bembridge & St Helens Guide 2010
Welcome to the 2010 edition of the Bembridge & St Helens Guide.
Ask ten different people what they like most about this area and likely as not
you’ll receive ten different replies.
To start with there is the natural beauty, whether it’s the downland, the harbour
and marshes, coastal and rural walks, or simply the beach. For the more active
obviously watersports are on offer, but so too are horse riding and gliding.
When eating out you can choose between cafes, pubs, award winning
restaurants, or having a takeaway. Whilst if you are catering yourself we have a fish shop,
butcher, bakery, farm shop, delicatessens, as well as the supermarkets. What other retail area
on the Island can offer all these?
Then there’s also the sense of community, which I’m sure in part is due to the fact that so many
of us work, as well as live, in the area. For away from the main streets and harbourside you’ll
find a surprising range of businesses catering to the needs of the local and wider economy.
Even in the best of times small businesses face increasing
challenges and competition, and it is only by your support that
they will continue to prosper, and help make the area the vibrant
place it is.
This booklet is your guide to this area, its attractions and its
businesses. Whether you are a local or a visitor, on behalf of the
Bembridge Business Association I hope you enjoy reading it and
finding out what the villages of Bembridge and St Helens have to
offer.

Secrets of the Fort Photos courtesy of the National Trust
Bembridge Fort sits like some great brooding presence on Culver Down, mostly
ignored as people head on to the Culver Haven pub or to the car parking areas
further up the road.
Built in the 1860s, it formed part of a ring of defences protecting the island and the naval dockyards
at Portsmouth from the threat of a French invasion. Other links in this chain of defence included the
Needles Old Battery and several forts in the Solent. In the event the French never came, with the
result that the fortifications became known as ‘Palmerston’s Follies’.
Unless you went and had a close squint at the sign near to its entrance, you wouldn’t necessarily
know that it was owned by the National Trust. It has to be said that it is one of their lower-profile
acquisitions.
Though part of it is occupied by an industrial tenant, for years the rest of the fort was out of bounds
to the general public. Recently, however, the Trust has been offering guided tours of the property,
which, though still semi-derelict, is gradually being cleared and restored by a small group of
volunteers.
The tours, which must be booked in advance, last one and a half hours and are conducted by
volunteer guides. In 2010 the tours will take place during the morning of the first and third Tuesdays
of each month, starting on April 6.
It should be noted that the
tours are not suitable for
children under the age of ten,
and that there are many uneven
surfaces and some steep steps.
The Trust says that it may be
possible to provide additional
tours for private groups of ten
or more.
If you would like to book a
place on one of the tours, call
the Trust on (01983) 741020
or contact them by email at

Harbourmaster Chris Turvey writes …
On behalf of the Bembridge Harbour Company and its staff I would like to
welcome all visitors to Bembridge hoping you have a safe and enjoyable stay.
There are many beautiful walks around the Harbour, which is a Site of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Duver Marina is the main mooring area for visiting yachtsmen. We have
approximately 100 visitor berths and 30+ permanent berths. Facilities on this
site include 2 water taxis which operates all year round, a diesel fuel service,
and boatyard services. We have a large BBQ in a sheltered area with seating,
and a shop which stocks everything from the morning paper to a good bottle of wine. We also have
an “internet hotspot”, ask at the harbour office for details. There are plans for further development
and improvement on this site, details will be available on our website www.bembridgeharbour.co.uk.
The Fisherman’s Marina formally Fisherman’s Wharf is being upgraded and extended and is the
home of the Bembridge fishing fleet, famous for lobster and crab. There is space for over 60
permanent berths.
The Bembridge Marina, home to 80 permanent berth holders has a taxi landing spot and is the
stop off for the Brading Haven Yacht Club. Fishing trips, run by Catchalot, leave regularly from the
northern pontoon. There are planned upgrades for this site, details will be available on our website.
Selwyn Marina formally known as Wades Pontoon has been replaced with a new facility including a
modern electricity and water supply.
Fully serviced moorings are now available. They are arranged in trots with boats moored fore and
aft. All moorings are serviced by a water taxi which is free of charge to run mooring holders and
crew to and from their boats – please phone the office on 01983 872828 to reserve a mooring.
Please visit our website for additional information or speak to me or the harbour staff. We are always
happy to help with local information and provide advice.

Baywatch on the Beach
A delightful Seafood Restaurant
A warm welcome awaits at the Baywatch, famous licensed Seafood
Restaurant, Shop and Beach Café.
Situated on the water’s edge to starboard as you pass buoy number 6A in
the approach channel to Bembridge Harbour, just a 5-minute walk from the
harbourmaster’s office at the marina (walk across the sand dunes to the
waterfront and along past the beach huts until you reach the Baywatch).
Open every day and most evenings from early March to early November
with a friendly relaxed atmosphere and the choice of tables both inside
and out. It is usually essential to make a reservation for dinner.
Ph6oto - B Langford
The Baywatch is unique in offering one of the finest views of the
Eastern Solent. The view constantly changes and there is always
something interesting to watch, from majestic cruise ships such
as the Queen Mary 2 and Oriana leaving on the tide for far flung
exotic places to the myriad of small craft entering and leaving
Bembridge Harbour or even our local fishermen bringing home
the ‘catch of the day’ to be served at the Baywatch the same
evening.
Enjoy breakfast (all day!), lunch, a fine dinner or just a coffee,
bottle of wine or glass of beer and watch the maritime world go
by.
We specialise in fresh seafood – local crab, lobster, sea bass and
our famous signature dish - Moules Mariniers. We also offer a
daily specials board together with a selection of steak, pasta,
meat, and vegetarian dishes.
Opening times vary according to season and weather. We are a
family business so please check daily times.

Location Inspiration: Local Art Showcase
It is perhaps not surprising that beautiful places tend to become artistic
hotspots. Take St Ives in Cornwall, which is loved as much for its connections
with painters and sculptors as it is for its sun, sea and sand.
Bembridge and St Helens benefit from the same effect. Largely hidden from
view, a small army of artists, working in a variety of media, are busy creating
objects of interest and beauty. Many, though not all, are directly influenced
by their immediate surroundings, with seascapes and natural forms featuring
strongly. Some of them are professionals, with slick websites displaying their
works, while for others it is more of a sideline – though their work is just as
worthy of attention.
Most of the artists showcased in the following pages show their work in the annual Open Studios
scheme, which is organised by the Isle of Wight Council’s Arts Development Unit. As its name
suggests, Open Studios sees the Island’s artists opening their doors to their workspaces, which are
often part of their homes. In 2010, the Open Studios scheme in Bembridge and St Helens takes place
on the weekend of 23-26 July. Look out for the special booklet which shows more of the artists’ work
and also gives directions to their studios.
The following round-up does not claim to be an exhaustive overview of what is going on artistically
in the Bembridge and St Helens area - it is more of a snapshot. There will be other artists working in
the area not featured here - keep your eyes and ears open for their work too.
Becky Samuelson:
“For the last 20 years I have been avidly painting the
stunning and unique coastline and landscape of the Isle
of Wight. Drawn to the ever changing skies, sculptured
shoreline, tree lined beaches and undulating countryside,
the Island offers unparalleled subject matter to me. A
fresh painting still evokes the same thrill today and I love
the initial stages of a painting when I am out and about;
looking, planning, working out the options ahead of me.
I work in most mediums and have exhibited widely on the
Island and across England. Over the past few years I have
been exploring acrylic paint in depth, loving the texture
and the push and pull of this medium.”
My studio is always open to visitors
where I have a constantly evolving
display of original art, cards and
notelets.
This year my paintings will be once
again exhibited at Brading Roman Villa
at Easter, Seaview Arts throughout the
year and with a main exhibition in July
and at Bembridge in August.”

John R Hunter:
“My paintings are inspired by light and colour, and
people’s faces.
I recently painted some 36 portraits of Bembridge
people at work, from postmen to lifeboatmen to
restaurant owners and aircraft builders, initially just
for fun as a learning exercise, and now to commission.
For me the harbours, beaches, piers and promenades
crowded by summer visitors make for attractive
scenes, especially if set against a setting sun. I
spent my working life in the field of development
engineering and business management, setting aside
until now my interest in art.
Bembridge and the Island in
general is an inspiring place
for painting the scenery.
However for me as of yet it is
the Bembridge people that have
inspired me the most.”

Janice Thwaites:
“I am an installation artist and I work with different materials, within a specific space. Materials
recently used include, duvets, and inflated beach goods. However for my most recent work
‘Liberating Laurence’ I have used canvas and acrylic paint.
My model has been painted coming through a window, from a light world into another, darker one.
He has been liberated literally, as I have cut him out of the canvas, with a scalpel. Laurence, a two
dimensional figure, now inhabits a three dimensional world. I have reinstated, the cut out figure,
back onto the canvas, where he will never comfortably fit again.
I have also photographed
him in his new world. I plan
to install the life size figure, in
many places. I will also use the
vacated canvas. I will be taking
it to Bembridge Beach, where
the empty space, will be viewed,
filled with sea and sand. Maybe
Laurence will be washed up on
this same beach. Photography
is a very important part of my
practice.”

Hilary Hayton:
“My paintings and screen prints
are predominantly influenced
by the Island and its Solent
images. ‘Solent Celebration’ with
its fireworks, fort and beach
bonfire, the ‘Round the Island’
series and its powerful elemental
geometry, ‘Scow Parade’, ‘Beat up
the Harbour’, ‘The Evening Race’
- all these were inspired by local
events.
Four years ago I returned to my

Suzanne Whitmarsh:
“I first began painting about eight years ago.
Although I love and admire detailed watercolour
paintings, I wanted to come up with something
contemporary that people could recognize and
so my stripe collection of paintings began. I love
to simplify the landscape into bright bold colours,
usually working on canvas using acrylics.
Sometimes I find the intense concentration involved
in producing this kind of art quite tiresome, so then
I let myself go with the brush and my style is very
different.”

Barbara Gould:
“My approach to painting is to portray
my inner feelings of a subject, and I feel
happy when achieving an expression
in a way that comes alive to the viewer
without words of explanation.
“Generally the finished painting will
be a suggestion of a scene that has
captured my imagination, and my desire
is for people to derive happiness and
relaxation when looking into them. Art is
an enthralling and inner communication
I want to express to others. I see colour
and richness in people and everyday
living and try to evoke the atmosphere
which people and places unknowingly
create.
“Typical works are of harbour scenes,
children, people and places near home,
and around London and Paris.”
Sally Woodford:
“The huge significance the local landscape has on my
ceramics becomes very apparent in my studio, with
the windowsills stacked with stones, and walls dotted
with photographs taken over the last eleven years
or so while walking the dogs between Bembridge
harbour and Whitecliff.
Every aspect of the beach has relevance, inspiring my
use of colour, texture and form. Each individual stone
can evoke a series of ideas, and so by hand building
in clay the pieces evolve slowly as I try to capture the
essence of the sea and landscape. Recently I have
begun experimenting with clay dug from the beach.
My work is sculptural and ranges in scale from 10cm
to 175cm.
Using Raku and smoke firing introduces an
unpredictable element as the fire and smoke
contributes its own input to the finish of each piece.
I also make clay wall tiles mounted on slate depicting
seacape images.”

works, depicting lilac fields
and vineyards, have been sold

“My passion is painting vibrant
landscapes in oil, acrylic, watercolour
and pastels. I am inspired by the
diversity of the Island’s beautiful
coastline and landscape, especially
the wonderful ever-changing scenes
along the beach in Bembridge, St
Helens and Seaview. I particularly

The Bembridge Heritage Society
The Bembridge Heritage Society was formed in 1996 to record and present the rich
history and heritage of Bembridge and its surrounding areas.
The exhibition covers many aspects ofVillage including a large collection of photographs
depicting life over the years. Our cabinets show many intriguing articles from war time to
a collection of 1950’s stationery and toys. Our models include Bembridge Station and the
restored Pill Box at Yar Bridge. Our original PLUTO pump creates a lot of interest as do our
own publications and videos which are on sale at the Centre.
Do come and visit us and help keep our Heritage for future generations.
