Bembridge and St Helens
Guide 2009
Published by the Bembridge Business Association

Welcome to Bembridge
The Bembridge Business Association, now in its 12th year, is pleased to
welcome all readers of this guide to Bembridge and St Helens.
Despite the current ‘credit crunch’, both villages are weathering the economic
storm as well as could be expected, and with your support we hope to continue
to do so.
During your time in the area, we would urge you to make as much use of our
independent local businesses as possible, whether it’s for eating out, stocking
up for a picnic or filling up with petrol. By doing this you can make sure your money stays
in circulation here, benefiting local people, rather than being shipped out to the head office
of one of the major supermarket chains that have a presence on the Island. And if you can
mention the guide when you use any of the advertised services, so much the better!
This eastern tip of the Island is still relatively undiscovered and we have
no doubt that visitors will be impressed with what they find. Quiet
beaches, nature reserves, friendly local shops, characterful pubs, open
downland with magnificent views and one the biggest village greens in
England – all these fall within the twin parishes of Bembridge and St
Helens.
If you’re a visitor, we hope this guide enhances your stay; if you’re a
resident we are confident that it will serve as a useful and more locally
focused version of the Phone Book.
In either case, thank you for reading it.

Baywatch on the Beach
A delightful Seafood Restaurant
A warm welcome awaits at the Baywatch, famous licensed Seafood
Restaurant, Shop and Beach Café.
Situated on the water’s edge to starboard as you pass buoy number 6A in
the approach channel to Bembridge Harbour, just a 5-minute walk from the
harbourmaster’s office at the marina (walk across the sand dunes to the
waterfront and along past the beach huts until you reach the Baywatch).
Open every day and most evenings from early March to early November
with a friendly relaxed atmosphere and the choice of tables both inside
and out. It is usually essential to make a reservation for dinner.

The Baywatch is unique in offering one of the finest views of the
Eastern Solent. The view constantly changes and there is always
something interesting to watch, from majestic cruise ships such
as the Queen Mary 2 and Oriana leaving on the tide for far flung
exotic places to the myriad of small craft entering and leaving
Bembridge Harbour or even our local fishermen bringing home
the ‘catch of the day’ to be served at the Baywatch the same
evening.
Enjoy breakfast (all day!), lunch, a fine dinner or just a coffee,
bottle of wine or glass of beer and watch the maritime world go
by.
We specialise in fresh seafood – local crab, lobster, sea bass and
our famous signature dish - Moules Mariniers. We also offer a
daily specials board together with a selection of steak, pasta,
meat, and vegetarian dishes.
Opening times vary according to season and weather. We are a

Highlights from Bembridge Lifeboat history
1867 Station established and a boathouse built at Lane End by RNLI, following removal of the Nab Light
to a great distance from the shore. The first lifeboat was launched off a carriage with the aid of oil flares
on dark nights.
1888 The Brook lifeboat was launched on 9 March to the ship Sirenia but was thrown back on the
beach and the second coxswain and another man washed out of her and lost. Word somehow reached
Bembridge and Coxswain Attrill of the Bembridge lifeboat set off on foot and walked to Brooke, some
15 miles, in leather sea boots and offered himself as a volunteer to replace the man who had been killed.
The Brook lifeboat was re-launched and the crew of the Sirenia were rescued.
1899 The lifeboat rescued 14 men from a Navy torpedo boat grounded on Bembridge Ledge.
1915 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain John Holbrook for rescuing 110 men from HM Transport
Empress Queen that was stranded on the Ring Rocks Foreland.
1919 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain John Holbrook for rescuing 13 people from the steam-
ship Wakulla.
1922 The first motor lifeboat sent to the Isle of Wight arrived at Bembridge. A concrete pier, 250 yards
in length, was built with a boathouse on piles at the seaward end. The lifeboat launched directly into
deep water down a slipway.
1940 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain Harry J Gawn for rescuing 21 crew from the Navy
minesweeper Kingston Cairngorm.
1964 An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established and the D class lifeboat was kept in the 1867
boathouse.
1970 Framed Letters of Thanks were sent to ILB Crew Members Martin S Humphrey and Barry L Dyer
for rescuing two men from two motor boats.
1972 The British Empire Medal was awarded to Coxswain Peter Smith.
1987 The boathouse was adapted for the new Tyne Class lifeboat.
1989 The slipway was extended to recover the lifeboat at low tide.
1993 A Framed Letter of Thanks was presented to Coxswain Archibald Henley for rescuing, with Hay-
ling Island lifeboat, 17 people from the yacht Donald Searle.
1994 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Helmsman Alan Attrill for rescu-
ing three crew from the yacht Bari aground on Bembridge Ledge.
Framed Letters of Thanks were awarded to Helmsman Alan Attrill and Crew Members Graeme White
and Geoffrey Attrill for rescuing three crew from the motor cruiser Jade.
Improved crew facilities were provided; major slipway repairs were carried out; and a boathouse winch
was installed.
1996 A new D class lifeboat was placed on service.
2004 Former Coxswain Martin Woodward was awarded the MBE.
2005 The new D class lifeboat Dorothy Beatrice May Gorman was placed on service on 10 August.

but our short sections of it are definitely worth
exploring. From Bembridge Point (the bit of beach
behind the Tollgate Café – there’s usually parking
available at the gravel car park close by), there’s a
lovely stretch of beach walking heading south-east
towards the lifeboat station at Lane End. If it’s high
tide, however, you may be faced with some hard
work over the large stones that the Solent stacks
up at the back of the beach. Once past the lifeboat
station the official coastal path cuts inland, though
if the tide isn’t too high it is perfectly possible to
continue round to the famous Crab and Lobster

Bembridge and St Helens … a short history
Bembridge, on the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight, was once cut off from the rest of the Island
by a large expanse of water that stretched all the way to Brading. In the mid-1800s, and in the
face of considerable engineering difficulties, an embankment carrying rail and road links was
built from St Helens to the bottom of Kings Road.
Bembridge grew in popularity and size at the end of the 19th century following the arrival of the railway
and is now one of the largest villages in England.
The Harbour is home to two sailing clubs – Bembridge Sailing Club which was founded in 1886, and
Brading Haven Yacht Club, both supporting all-year-round sailing activities. The thriving marina at St
Helens is managed on behalf of the Bembridge Harbour Improvements Company by harbourmaster,
Chris Turvey. Commercial fishing craft work out of the harbour, and regular fishing trips can be booked.
Heritage
Bembridge offers a wide variety of shops, including two supermarkets, a bakery, a butchery, two delis,
pubs, restaurants as well as art galleries, art and craft shops, a fish and chip shop, a bank, and a Post
Office. The Bembridge Heritage Centre next to the library is a mine of local information, and exhibits
include parts of the original PLUTO pump, which were vital in providing oil supplies for the D-Day land-
ings. There are more shops at Lane End and cashpoints at both supermarkets.
An unusual feature in Bembridge High Street, is the Post Office K1 design phone box, one of the first
standardised phone boxes built in 1921. This box is the only surviving one of its kind in the south of
England, and has a very distinct shape, especially with its metal spike on top.
The last remaining windmill on the Island can be found just outside Bembridge. A typical cap mill, which
dates from 1700, it has undergone extensive restoration and is managed by the National Trust.
Constructed between 1862 and 1867 against possible invasion by Napoleon’s forces, Bembridge Fort,
overlooking Bembridge Harbour, the Solent and Sandown Bay, was part of Lord Palmerston’s defence
network to protect Portsmouth Harbour, is now managed by the National Trust.
St Helens lies on high ground to the north of Bembridge and has good views over the busy harbour which
remains a haven for birds and wildlife. As well as having two fine restaurants, the village boasts a pub,
Post Office and general store, an antiquarian bookshop, a holiday camp and a garage. St Helens also has
a fine village green which hosts a number of local sporting and social events.
A short 15-minute walk from the village green leads visitors to a pleasant sheltered and sandy beach on
the Duver, open grassy sand dunes at the mouth of the harbour and owned by the National Trust. The
beach, which is excellent for swimming and fishing, offers outstanding views of St Helens Fort and the
Solent, and benefits from a seafront café/restaurant, with a reputation for good food and wine.
St Helens grew around the 12th century Cluniac Priory whose monks built and administered the church,
which was situated on the Duver, until it was claimed by the crown in 1414. The old church tower still
stands to this day, used as a seamark.

Brading Marshes: a wetland wonderland
As explained elsewhere, Bembridge Harbour is partly man-made by the
building of the embankment between St Helens and Bembridge closing off
Brading Haven first started in 1874 and finally completed in 1880. Before
then, boats were able to navigate all the way up the estuary of the River Yar
to Brading, which was an important port in its heyday. Once the embank-
ment was built, what were once mudflats at low tide and extensive areas of
shallow water at high tide were partially drained to become marshland.
It is these wetlands, stretching from Bembridge the reduced salinity that had been noticed in some

While these lagoons may not compare visually
with, say, Lake Windermere, they offer one of
the rarest habitats in Britain, being one of the
most important places in the world for the star-
let sea anemone and providing a home for a rare
species of water beetle that is actually known as
the Bembridge water beetle – in the UK it is only
found here and in south Essex.
