The Arrogant
Monkey

Story & Illustrated By:

Amalina Nasir

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was
a beautiful but dense forest. The trees were blown
by the air and there were so many animals that
enjoyed living together except the monkey.

1

The monkey was very diligent, yet arrogant and 2
selfish towards others. The spring has finally come,
pleasant wind blowing and fresh buds blooming. “Wow,
there are so many fresh and delicious fruits on the
trees,” said the monkey happily.

“I have to be quick and pluck all of them,” said the 3
monkey greedily, “I’m not gonna leave any fruits
there.” While the monkey clung and jumped happily
from one tree to another, there was a giraffe and
elephant who are seeing him from afar.

“Look over there, the monkey is very selfish,” said the 4
elephant, “Although he takes all the fruits, he never
finished it till the end.” The giraffe slowly approached
him and said “Hey friend, take enough fruit. Don’t waste
it or else others will faint from hunger.”

“I don’t care. The others are very slow and lazy. It is a 5
first come and first served game,” answered the monkey.
“Don’t behave like that, you won’t have any friends at
this stake,” sneered the elephant. The monkey deafened
his ears and kept walking away.

On his way back home, the monkey came across his 6
neighbor, the bear. “Wow! You got a lot of fruits,” told
the bear. “Can I have some? I can't go out too far to
find the fruits. My son at home is sick, no one is taking
care of him,” told the bear.

The monkey frowned his brow and said “No! Find it 7
yourself.” The bear looked tired and sad. “Please, I need
those fruits, I will do anything in return,” appealed the
bear. “Arghhhh, go away! Don’t bother me anymore,”
screamed the monkey.

The next day, the giraffe and the elephant went to visit 8
the bear and his son. They brought fruits and medicine
with them. As they chatted among each other, the bear
came out of the house to take some honey and served it.

On his way out, the bear sniffed the smell of smoke. He 9
quickly called his friend “Giraffe! Elephant! Come outside
for a moment,” shouted the bear. “It looks like something
is burning in our forest area,” told the bear.

“Giraffe, can you please find out, which area is burning?” 10
asked the bear. The giraffe stretched its long neck and
shouted “Monkey’s house is on fire!”. “Let's save him! He
is in a big trouble,” said the bear.

The bear sacrificed himself by entering the fire to
rescue the monkey. The giraffe quickly ran to the river
nearby and got some water. The elephant then sprayed
the water to put out the fire. The monkey was very
lucky because he was saved with the help of his neighbor
and friends.

The monkey lowered his head to the ground and
regretted his arrogant attitude. “Thank you for saving
my life. If you guys didn’t help me, I am no longer living
in this world,” said the monkey with a very sad feeling.

13

“It is okay. At least, you are safe and aware of your 14
mistake,” persuaded the bear, “That is the importance
of living together and helping each other.” he then
continued. The other animals also agreed with the bear's
word.

Since then, the monkey is no longer arrogant. He 15
begins to make friends with other animals. If he has
more food, surely he would give it to the bear and
other animals.

Moral Value:

Be good and help others
who are in need.

[ A kind gesture can reach a wound
that only kindness can heal ]
