We are Born as
Introduction
I was born with a stump as my right hand. If I was
given a choice, I would want to the same as those
who have both hands. We don’t choose to be born,
but we are chosen to be born as champions. I will
share my life story in this book while introducing
myself to you, in a friendly approach, and with
goodwill to connect with you. Will you welcome me
by reading this book?

volunteering work
Prologue
I am writing this book in the genre of anthropology and sociology.
Anthropology is a field that revolves around cultural practices of certain
cultures or of the community, while sociology is a field that revolves
around the build-ups of a community, such as family, school, media,
beliefs, and more. The purpose of this writing is to allow the readers to
understand and appreciate the multinational practices of the society in
Malaysia. We will understand that these two fields explain how people
live. There will be implementations of psychology practices and
methods as motivational and inspirational aspects are involved. I have
also included a reflection at the end of each chapter. The reflection will
help provide more self-awareness, an opportunity to ‘digest’ the
matters that will be discussed, and engrave information within our
subconscious mind. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I believe that by
reading through the use of these methods will provide the optimal
impact for the readers.

Prologue
As a Unity Ambassador, I would like to call a celebration with
the community for achieving equality and harmonizing the existing
differences between diversities in race and beliefs. Together, we maintain the
harmony and prosperity of Malaysia. In the meantime, as I wrote this book, I
included holistic developmental aspects of a person which discuss life values
physically, spiritually, and in the relation of heritage. I also hope that this
book will provide enlightenment, inspiration, and motivation to the readers in
the face of life experiences. I will mention beforehand to apologize for any
mistakes or misstatements in this book, and also sincerely express my utmost
appreciation for everyone to make time to read this book. Hopefully, this book
will bring benefits to you, thank you very much.

Chapter 1: 20th June 1974
20th June 1974 at the Besar Kota Bharu Hospital, Kelantan. The clock
strikes 7:15 pm when my mother gave birth to me. Inside the
maternity ward, around twenty babies were born on that day. After the
nurse cleaned me up, she proceeded to wrap the towel around me as
she did with the other babies. Then, she handed me over to my mother
and said, “Kak, bilo kak kelih bayi ni, kak jange terkejut deh!” (Sis,
please don't be surprised if you see your baby later)
Entrance of Raja Perempuan
Zainab II Hospital, formerly known
as Besar Kota Bharu Hospital.
The last time I visited the hospital
where I was born was around
early January 2015, during the
flood rescue mission. I will
mention more about it later in the
book.
10
Chapter 1: 20th June 1974
My mother stared at the nurse in confusion. Although
she has not seen me yet, my mother felt worried by the nurse’s words.
I was placed in my mother’s arms on the bed. She held me for the first
time. My mom looked at me, who was just born, full of love. A cute
baby with skin lighter than my sister and both of my brothers. Slowly,
as my mother unwrapped the towel, she finally understood what the
nurse meant.
Suddenly…
11
Chapter 1: 20th June 1974
Suddenly, my mother said: “Wah, comelnyo tange
dio!” (Wow, he has a cute right arm!) While smiling, my mother
asked the nurse, “Bahagie laing mace mano misi?” (Nurse, how about
other part). The nurse replied, “The rest of his body was perfect, only
his right hand was born to be like that so. Your baby is awesome, all
the babies were crying when they were cleaned but your baby didn't
cry or yell.” My mother responded with a smile. That was what my
mother told me about the day I was born. After being discharged from
the hospital, my father welcomed us in a taxi at a taxi station beside
SKMK bus station, Kota Bharu which still exists until now.

Chapter 1: 20th June 1974
Reflection
Our birth story indicates the beginning of our lives in this world.
Every birth is an amazing experience for both of our parents.
Although there may be people who are born into unhappy families, I
believe there will still be moments that give meaning to our birth. I
have prepared wonderful stories for each chapter after this regarding
the wonder of every birth. Now please write the moments of when
you were born as your amazing reflection:
13
Chapter 2: Self Introduction
My distinct difference also became one of my identities. Before my
mother came out of the maternity ward, a woman beside my mother’s
bed saw me. That woman will have a baby the next morning. Eighteen
years later, a classmate of mine, whose name is Haw Yin, told me that
his mother used to be beside my mother’s bed while waiting for his
turn to be given birth.
This is the youngest where I have been in a photo, about the age of 3 years. I
couldn’t share a picture of when I was a baby as my family was poor. Can
you guess which one am I?
14
Chapter 2: Self Introduction
I asked how did his mother know? He told me that
after his mother saw me in school activity photos, she remembered
seeing me eighteen years ago. Although we do not have any blood
ties, I am glad that there are still people who recognized me. Not to
mention that my face is a lot different from when I was a baby. What
remains the same is my right hand, which is still the same size
although I am growing with age. To this day, I still remember Haw
Yin’s birthday, which is 21 June 1974, a day late from mine. If it was
someone else, they may not have this specialty, right?
During middle school, I was active in hiking activities. Just by
looking at my backpack, it is obvious that I am not just a random
hiker… right? ☺
15
Chapter 2: Self Introduction
Reflection
Other than the wonderful moments between your family members
when you were born (Chapter 1), is there a relationship between your
birth and someone you know now? If there is, please write a story
about it. If otherwise, you can write about identifiable traits on your
body when you were born. If you are unsure, please ask your mother
or anyone who knows about the identifiable traits on your body during
your birth. You can also write both stories here:
16
Chapter 3: Lunar Calendar, 1st of May
Other than that, on the date of 20 June 1974 which is equivalent to the
1st of May on the lunar calendar that marks the first day on every new
moon. It is a date that is usually celebrated with chanting prayers at
the temple or at home that is normally accompanied with garlands and
fruits. There are also vegetarian practices, a form of fasting for
Buddhists, Hindus, and Taoists on that date.

Calendar. Those dates

Buddhist and Taoist
religions.
17
Chapter 3: Lunar Calendar, 1st of May
In the Lunar Calendar, the year when I was born,
which is 1974, is the year of the tiger. When I was 18 years old, there
was a shaman called ‘Ho la’ or ‘Tiger Angel’, according to Chinese
beliefs of the Taoist religion, who told my mother that he wanted to
see me because I resembled his sibling before birth. My mother asked
me if I dreamt about meeting a tiger after that event, but I reply that I
was not sure.
When I was in my early 20s, there was a fortune teller,
who uses Lunar Calendar readings, that told me that tigers on the first
day of May are a good tiger, but it lacks a certain body part.
Moreover, this tiger actually sacrificed its body part for a good cause,
of which he will be rewarded with after being born.

Bab 3: Calendar Cina, 1hb Bulan 5
Reflection
I believe birth dates are not myths or superstitions. Even the well-
known motivational speaker Dato' Dr. Haji Mohd Fadzilah Kamsah
spoke about it. Thus, please write down about the uniqueness of
your birth date:
19
Chapter 4: Odd Events
My mom once told me about an odd event that occurred when I was
seven days old. There was a snake that wrapped around the roof pillar
of grandfather’s house which did not waver even when they tried to
drive it away. At that moment, I was lying there while watching that
snake. Suddenly, I seemed to be saying something while waving my
hands and feet at the snake. After about a minute of our
‘conversation’, the snake slithered away. My grandfather said that
maybe that was a ‘friend’ who came to visit and congratulate us upon
the news of my birth. In fact, my grandfather remembers the story of a
Buddhist monk in Thailand who was also visited by snakes when he
was 7 days old. The Buddhist monk is called Luang Pu Thuat. Maybe
you have seen the statue of Luang Pu Thuat that is worshipped by
many believers of the Theravada Buddhist sect in Thailand and
Malaysia.

20
Chapter 4: Odd Events
Reflection
You may even have an odd story that occurred while you were still a
baby. Are you sure you have forgotten about it? Maybe it is the same
as my case, so try to ask your elderlies. Write your story as your
reflection:
21
Chapter 5: Meaning of my Name
An uncle gave me a name. The name in Mandarin is 王文雄 (Read as
Wang Wen Xiong), while the name after registration is Ong Boo
Siong. ‘Wang’ means king, ‘Wen’ can mean language, and ‘Xiong’
can be understood as warrior. Therefore, Wang Wen Xiong can be
translated as Warrior and King of Languages, sounds great! However,
the pronunciation in Hokkien is usually Bo Siang, which means
different…which is also true as my right hand is different from other
people’s. Thus, when I was in elementary school, my friend called me
Yang Guo (杨过), which is an epic celebrated warrior. They called me
Yang Guo because the stump on my right hand is similar to Yang
Guo’s. Therefore, ever since young, I considered myself as a warrior
and a hero!
Left: The 80s movie “Yang Guo” acted by Andy Lau
Right: Receiving the MyHero 2.0 Award on the 6th of October 2016 for
providing service to help the community regardless of race and religion, and
being appointed as a Unity Ambassador…haven’t I become a hero? ☺
22
Chapter 5: Meaning of my Name
Reflection
I believe everybody was given a meaningful name. Write down the
meaning of your name and who gave it. If you don’t know the
meaning behind your name, don’t worry, Google can help ☺
23
Chapter 6: OKU = Orang Kurang
Upaya (People with Disability)
The difference of my right hand was certainly considered a defect.
People who have defects or mental disorders are labeled as ‘Orang
Kurang Upaya’ (OKU), the disabled. Yes, I am one of the disabled.
But deep within my heart right now, I am not a disabled person. I can
drive, ride a bicycle, swim, and so on. Actually, that is just a term
used after the English translation of ‘people with disability’ (PWD).
Registering yourself or your children (if they can be categorized as OKU) is
not something to be ashamed of. For children with defects, the registration
allows proper statistical data for the government so that action plans can be
executed effectively. I will share about how we as citizens can contribute to
our prosperity and well-being regardless of having disabilities or not within
my next book. Make sure that you sign up on eBook Store on
www.mybook2u.com so that you can be one of the first people to read my
series of books later. ☺
24
Chapter 6: OKU = Orang Kurang
Upaya (The disabled people)
Reflection
In your opinion, how can people with disabilities be successful in life?
25
Chapter 7: OKU = Orang Kuat
Usaha (Strong people)
There is no right or wrong. The purpose of those terms is only for
easier communications, what is important what comes to your mind
upon encountering the term. Yes, I am a disabled person, however, I
am not disabled, for me, disabled means ‘Orang Kuat Usaha’, Strong
People! It is not to say that I am extraordinary, but surely, I will need
to put in strong efforts if I wish to succeed with the defect in my right
hand. For me, the term ‘disabled’ acts as a reminder to make my life
into a person who puts in strong efforts. There is an inspirational
quote that I heard from an amazing person from China with a
disability, who quoted, “To be disabled in life may be disappointing.
But we can make it into something we are proud of!” When I thought
about it, his words are true. If my hands are normal, there will be
nothing special to be able to play the guitar. But because my hand is
born this way, people would be much surprised when they see me play
the guitar. Do you want to see it? Click on the Youtube link below the
image (don’t forget to Like, Share, Subscribe, and Comment, yes, that
is the payoff ).
I am not amazing in playing
guitar, as I may not even be
talented in music. However,
due to my interest and
perseverance, I still managed
to play the guitar…can you do
it too?

Chapter 8: “Proud to be Yourself!”
Whatever that was mentioned in the previous chapters have made me
proud of who I am. As how white people usually express, “Be proud
to be yourself!”. Although those stories sound like a fairy tale that
may not make sense in today’s era, but it has given me meaning to
explain who I am. The perspective of cultural practices or
anthropology provides us understanding to how our lives are shaped. I
believe that every human being that exist are special.
We should be grateful to be able to
follow religious practices. Be
grateful and start to search for
happiness in life, just as I have it
now. I believe everybody have a
choice in determining their lives,
instead of surrendering it to
destiny. After making a choice, we
have to take one step at a time.
When you fall, you rise again. To
be successful is not to never fall,
but to fall and courageously rise
and return to be stronger in life
and succeed…do you agree?
28
Bab 8: “Proud to be Yourself!”
However, we should not be too proud to the point that
we seem arrogant. To feel proud of who we are is the core of our self-
confidence. We may feel weak, we may be lazy, we may feel
embarrassed and incompetent, and many more negative traits, but
those are not things we should be proud of. We will correct ourselves
to the best we can, and be accepting to whatever that comes. Improve
on what is needed to improve. These properties are called Kai Zen,
the work culture of the Japanese. On the contrary, if the physical
condition or the defect is something divine, then accept it. I cannot
change the defected right hand of mine but I can still change my
mindset to accept it.
The defect of my hand may be
something that I have been sad
and disappointed about, but
now I want to make it into
something I will give pride to in
this life.
29
Bab 8: “Proud to be Yourself!”
Reflection
Selfless pride is the key to our gratitude. Please state what are the
things you are proud of about yourself.
30
Chapter 9: Champion among 250mil!
We will take a look at science facts on how the process of fertilization
works. We were amongst hundreds of millions of sperm (there are
studies reporting that the amount of sperm that is released during
fertilization is around 250 million) of which only one will be
successful in fertilizing the ovum. Just imagine participating in a
competition consisting of hundreds of millions of participants, and
you became the champion, isn’t that out of the world? That is the
history in each individual among us. I still remember a best friend of
mine named Johari Yap who once shared the concept of ‘Champion’
when we stayed together around 25 years ago.
During a younger age with Johari
Yap, now titled as Dr. Johari Yap
Abdullah. Not only that, he is very
active in a few NGO, a columnist in
the Sinar Harian news, and is an
expert in Craniofacial Prosthesis.
31
Chapter 9: Champion among 250 mil!
This is a story from Dr. Johari Yap: “Among the
hundreds of millions of participants in a great game, they start to
gather energy and power through vibration. Some starts to push and
pull, some inflict harm to others, as everyone wants to be in front
because then they will have an opportunity. When the energy is at the
maximum, they will then use all their power to become the
champion…and finally…” the person reading this article is one of the
champions. That is what happened to us, the champions of the 250
million participants.
Burung berkicau sambil terbang melayang, di langit biru mereka terbang berkawan.
Akanku mandikan si manjaku sayang, moga kau segar nyaman sepanjang zaman.
(The birds chirp as they fly, in the blue skies they fly with their friends. I am going to
bathe my dear baby, and may you be comfortable always.)
32
Chapter 9: Champion among 250 mil!
Reflection
In every success, we must be grateful and appreciative. I believe you
have a lot of success in life before this. Please state those successes no
matter how big or small it is, as long as they are memorable moments
in your life.
33
Bab 10: “We were Born to Succeed!”
Our first step was to be champions. Each of us is an amazing creation,
as ‘We were born to succeed’, according to an English expression.
Thus, search for your personal significance, whether it is from beliefs
of cultural practices, religious beliefs, the name you were given, and
so on. I am sure that you are an amazing person too!
“I look at people some times
and think…Really?
That’s the sperm that won?”
34
Bab 10: “We were Born to Succeed!”
Reflection
Other than the phrase ‘We were born to succeed!’, please state other
phrases, quotes, or expressions that projects positive energy that is
needed in life.
35
Chapter 11: Let’s Compete!
For me, we do not need to compete with other people. The champions
are actually those who successfully stand their ground, don’t you
agree? In other words, everything we do are efforts we put in to build
our ‘self’, our mindset, and our souls to be better. My biggest
accomplishment was successfully doing my best for myself and other
people. Awards like the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Award,
MyHero Award, Unsung Hero, and so are some of the values in my
effort that has been provided to the community. “To be doing good
deeds is man’s most glorious task”. Thus, the efforts we put in are also
for the sake of our well-being.
Alongside with Datuk Lee
Chong Wei in the award of Ten
Outstanding Young Malaysian
Award by Junior Chamber of
International Malaysia. Among
other award winners are Datuk
Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk
Michele Yeoh in their respective
fields.
Along with the award winners,
icons for unity includes the
astronaut, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar
Shukor and movie actor, Datuk
Dr. ACP Md. Yusof bin Md.
Haslam.
36
Chapter 11: Let’s Compete!
Reflection
List your personal progress you have achieve today compared to
yesterday, this week compared to last month, this month compared to
last year. For example:
This week I managed to write 10 pages compared to last week’s
which is only 7 pages.
37
Chapter 12: Power of Choice
You successfully managed to read up to this chapter due to the
choices you have made. What have made you choose to have led you
to read until here? Maybe because this book enlightened your
mindset; maybe it is in your nature to finish reading a book; maybe
you may be intrigued by my writings; and so on. Whatever factor it is
that led you here, the next question is how far are you able to finish
reading this book or the next book of mine? If you believe that this
book brought benefits to your life, will you be able to finish reading
this book? It actually relates back to the question of what choice will
you make..
I choose to help everyone regardless of their religion or race.

Chapter 12: Power of Choice
When I give motivational talks at schools, I usually will ask the
audiences, “Who like to hear talks?”. Some raised their hands, but
usually, not many do. “Who doesn’t like to hear talks?”. Even so, not
many raised their hands too. I added on, “So, it doesn’t matter if you
are interested or not, you still have to be here, you do not have a
choice. Right?” Many nodded their heads in agreement. “Thus, no
matter if you like it or not, you have to be here because you are a
student of this school. The school has determined what you need to
do, and the school has chosen me as your speaker today.
The same goes for our lives. We do not have a choice
whether to be born with a perfect body or with a defect; we do not
have a choice to be born into a rich or poor family. However, I want to
remind you that, in truth, we possess choices better than that.
Although we exist on this earth not by our choice, but to fail or be
successful in this life, is our choice.
39
Chapter 12: Power of Choice
Although you have no choice but to be determined by
the school hear my talk, how do you want to listen to it, you have a
choice. There may be audiences who listen to this talk with full of
enthusiasm. But there may also be some that continuously complain
because they have to be here for two hours. So, what makes those
audiences so enthusiastic to listen and vice versa? Choices! In truth,
you are the one who determines your actions. It is your mindset that
determines how your body acts. It is the values within your soul that
determine how your mind thinks when making choices. Therefore, ask
yourself, what are the values in your life?”
Yes, my disability became an
inspiration. It is not the defect
that obstructs you from
success. In fact, some people
took advantages of challenges
in life to strive for success. For
me, that will be my disability.
Do not lose self-esteem due to
your physical condition, being
born in poor family, being an
orphan, being raised by a
single mom, and so on.
Instead, convert it all into
inspirations for us to succeed.
Where there is a will, there is a
way.
40
Chapter 12: Power of Choice
Those are the opening speech for my talk. The
audience will get to witness the defect of my hand, listen to my
speech, but what is most important is to feel appreciative and grateful
from realizing that I am a disabled person. I did not wish to be born
with a defect. But when I understood that birth is a blessing of God, I
never complained again. I felt that my daily life experience will be
able to inspire other people. It is because I idolized successful
disabled people, who helped people succeed by inspiring everyone’s
life. I realize that we are who that decide our successes or failures. It
doesn’t matter if we are perfect or disabled, doesn’t matter if we are
born into poor or rich families, we determine our own lives, and the
choices are within our hands.
I am happy to see them grow
up into great people that
contribute. Although we are
different in religion and culture,
but it is the difference that
makes it amazing for us to be
living together. Take a look at
the five fingers on our hands, it
is not the same. Thus, it is
similar to how we maintain
harmony between different
races and avoiding
discriminations and insults
towards differences between
each other.
41
Chapter 12: Power of Choice
Reflection
Try to reminisce the events that occurred in your life. What are the
undesired events that you have to face that is not due to your choice
but you chose to react positively to? Please write your experience:
42
Chapter 13: Life Changers
With the sophistication of the internet in the world today, we easily
get to know about many amazing people. One example is Nick
Vujicic. Although both his arms and legs are stumps when born, he
still became a successful motivational speaker. Steve Jobs, a pioneer
of a giant communications company, Apple Incorporation. Before
birth, his biological parents intended for abortion. Instead of
abortion, they presented their child (Steve Jobs) for anyone who
wishes to adopt a child. Steve Jobs did not blame them, instead he
continued his efforts to build into his success. In fact, a man who is
deaf and blind successfully graduated from Havard University with a
degree, that person is Haben Girma, a lawyer who is blind and deaf.
Imagine how would you have studied and communicated if you are
not only deaf, but also blind. However, Haben Girma proved that
nothing is impossible, if you dream for it to be true, you can only
strive for it to be true. His story made me recall about one of my
idols, Helen Keller. Therefore, we have to be mindful that although
God determined our birth, but we were given the choice of who we
will become.
43
Chapter 13: Life Changers
Reflection
We usually feed sad, give excuses, or complain when there is a
weakness or inferiority of your mentality or body parts. We often
focus on these weaknesses to the extent that we forget to be grateful
about having other perfect body parts. Try to identify your body parts
and present your gratitude and appreciation towards them:
1. Hands:
2. Legs:
3. Eyes/Sight:
4. Ear/Hearing:
5. Skin/Touch:
6. Brain/Mind:
44
Chapter 14: We are the Chosen One
If an unfortunate event occurred within our lives, try to think if it
occurred as a result of the actions we chose, or is it something beyond
our control? If that event or problem that arise not from our choice,
then surrender and leave it to God. For example, when I encounter a
terrible traffic jam on the roads in the city, I will certainly feel
uncomfortable, not to mention that I am in a rush. Instead of focusing
on the consumption of time which is out of my control, I will direct
my focus towards God’s plan. I did not choose to be late due to the
traffic jam. Thus, it would be better if I direct my focus towards the
power of God which have the possibility to help me avoid a car
accident; or maybe focusing on his plans so that I can be compensated
with a reward afterwards. Finally, I will still be grateful and will be
able to face the situation calmly and positively.
Use your
religious
practices
accordingly to
cultivate
gratitude and to
make yourself
be more at
peace..
45
Chapter 14: We are the Chosen One
It’s not exaggeration when I mentioned we are chosen
ones. God chose us as special people to be tested. I believe that in any
religion, we believe in a power greater than any of us humans. Thus,
regardless of whether we choose for it or we are chosen for it, we
must be certain about our goals and life destinations. Do remember
that we can change fate. We are the ‘drivers’ of our life and destiny.
Therefore, if life is a journey, the GPS tool will certainly make this
journey easier! I will be sharing with you regarding what is a life GPS

Chapter 15: Negative Mindset
In the past, I was a negative-minded person. I felt embarrassed and
ashamed with the defect of my right hand. When I was in high school,
I was very worried about accidentally bumping into a small kid. When
they bump into me, they would shout, “Hey, missing hand!”, “Ha ha,
no hands people!”, and many similar ridiculousness from them. I also
additionally felt awkward and at fault if the children were together
with adults, their parents or their siblings. I would notice the disgust
and fear in their facial expressions. Some may feel ashamed with the
child’s behavior, some may feel at fault, and some may ignore or
disregard the matter. Majority of them would ask the child to be
silent, be angry at them, some may even pull the boy’s hand away so
that it does not touch mine. If it was you, what would you have done?
The tendencies such as to mock, discriminate, and laugh at disabled people
does not only exist within children. Even people ranging from regular adults
to leaders of the world would disregard and be oblivious towards these
people. What exactly is our role as members of the society?

Chapter 16: Not Accepting Myself
When I stand in front of a mirror, I detest to look at my right hand.
Similarly, when taking a picture, I would slightly twist my body
clockwise and find a friend to hide my right hand, or lean against a
pole or wall. All those behaviors are due to me not accepting the
defect of my right hand. I constantly felt miserable, I would stay home
every chance I get, and disliked heading out due to the fear of
bumping into another child.
As I remember it, before the age of
5, I was not conscious about the
difference of my right hand
compared to everyone else. When I
realized it, I frequently asked why
my hand in this condition? My
mother always advised me to not
feel sad. However, it was difficult for
me to accept the situation.
Regardless, my mom always
treated me no different from other
children, there was no special
attention or special care needed.
That was good for me because I will
have to find out more about the
experiences in my life myself.
Therefore, for parents who have a
disabled child, do give them a
chance to learn how to be
independent. What I meant was, do
not overprotect them as it may lead
them to be too dependent of other’s
assistance.
