The following is a new format that we intend to use as a means of communicating Club is-
sues with our membership. Today’s focus

concerns the disposition of the “Winches Award and Trophy”

The Winches (Women in Nautical Circles Helping Each Other Sail) program initiated was in 2002 as
a means of empowering skippers and crew to increase participation, confidence and skill building on
the race course. The WINCHES Trophy was created to acknowledge superior performance and ef-
fort. In my opinion this trophy is simply elegant and is one of my favorites.
The first year put four boats and twenty five participants through a series of rigorous competitions to
determine the champion. With the effort and dedication invested in this series, all need to be ap-
plauded.

What once was a vibrant series has faded away. I need to make note here that in 2002 the Capri
fleet included thirteen boats and PHRF another twelve boats. Our current numbers on the course
have decreased significantly.
Today I am laying out new challenges, first for a champion to pick up the WINCHES torch (or
winch handle) and recreate a series, or race, in the spirit of the original mission. I am also chal-
lenging everyone for active participation and support of this series or event.
As an alternative we may need to redefine the criteria for award of this wonderful trophy.
I will be silent now and wait for the wisdom of the membership to show a path forward on this
subject.
