Academic Staff College conducts two types of courses. Orientation Programs are
conducted to acquaint young college and university teachers with wide scope of meeting
professional expertise and social expectations by training young teachers through well-
organized theory and practical sessions on class-room presentations and students interactions.
The sessions are conducted by peer resource persons in the field. Participants self-organized
presentation-cum-evaluation sessions help develop confidence in them. The other activity,
Refresher Courses for teachers at various levels of profession constantly update them as perthe
new developments in teaching and research in their respective subjects. These courses also
acquaint them with newer concepts of teaching and on-line technology. The third important
segment of ASC functioning is attained through frequent meeting with Principals of colleges.

At UGC Academic Staff College, Jabalpur, a judicious blend of concepts, theory and
practice prepares the teachers to function in a dynamic environment. The emphasis is on
involving the teacher participants in the learning process and helping them to relate concepts
and theory to the requirements of imparting higher education. The curriculum as laid down by
the UGC embraces regular classroom-sessions, practical exercises, educational excursions,

industrial visits, special seminars at prestigious training institutions as the College of Materials
Management, a Grade ‘A’ training institution of the Indian army and Indian Council of
Medical Research, peer group teaching, micro teaching, project presentation, etc. The visit to
the campus of central jail and the recommendations put forth by the participants of a course
are worth a mention. These activities are video graphed, enabling us to display them to the
subsequent courses.

The curriculum at the Institute comprises of lectures by eminent scholars,
comprehensive case studies, group discussions, peer group teaching presentations, simulation
exercises, workshops, teaching games and structured and unstructured group work, along with
excursions to places of academic importance. The participants are subjected to strenuous
schedules to be physically and mentally adapt at handling challenges and pressures of higher
education. Leaders, politicians, IPS and IAS officers, professionals like income tax advocates,
