FROM THE HEAD OF THE SCHOOL
James Dawson
The young people So much about giving is about faith and hope. So much about helping
entrusted to us others is tied to the reverberating concept sometimes referred to as
pay it forward “pay it forward”: the notion that we can take the generosity and benefits
every time they that come our way and pass those benefits along to others, and not
act, or dance, or necessarily to the people or institutions that gave them to us in the first
sing, or create... place. The earliest description of that concept was the plot of an ancient

in the success
that they attain. PCS is particularly fortunate in that we have two compelling foci for the
generosity of our donors. First and foremost, education. President John F.
Kennedy once said, “Let us think of education as the means of developing
our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and
dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone”.
Perhaps, more than anything that is bestowed upon us, education is
the foremost tool by which we can pay it forward to those who follow;
perhaps more than any other group of people, educators are the ultimate
example of the pay it forward thinkers. In addition to our commitment
to education, we also enshrine the power and passion of young people
through their commitment to the arts, competitive sports and other
areas of interest, including the burgeoning field of technology and social
media; in all cases, our students share their talents and creativity with
those who are, at the very core and essence of creative thinking, its
benefactors. The young people entrusted to us pay it forward every
time they act, or dance, or sing, or create. They, too, are extraordinary
examples of people whose very lives are committed to this mentality;
they, too, touch the lives of others in what they create, in what they
interpret, in how they achieve, in what they seek, in the success that they
attain.
Each of the donors in this year’s Annual Report are also among that
pantheon of leaders, in that rare but profoundly appreciated mix of
people who have shared their resources, their talents, their drive and
their hopes for the future, in this case, with this remarkable school. In
each of the plethora of generosities that create this report through the
remarkable giving – paying it forward, if you will – that our benefactors
have done this past year, you ensure that our mission of educating, our
ongoing commitment to the arts, competitive sports and the creative
mind, will continue and, in so doing, the long, century old tradition of
paying it forward to the future remains extant and alive and powerful. On
behalf of all of us at PCS, and mostly on behalf of the dreamers who are
our students, I am profoundly grateful.

Carol Kleban
a true friend who touched our hearts and our souls
I cannot end this year’s report without a word about one very special individual who proved through
her life the power of paying it forward, who espoused the notion that we can all give back, in a variety
of ways, but who did so with class and charm and intellect as she touched the lives of countless others; I
am, of course, referring to the late Carol Kleban.
Carol was our colleague and the students’ Principal/Associate Head of School, but, more importantly, a
true friend who touched our hearts and our souls. She dedicated her life to the dual mission embodied
in our credo to support the arts and to celebrate the mind; she touched so many lives through her
ongoing and never-ending commitment to pay forward her own success; she inexhaustibly shared her
indomitable good will; and, through her never wavering belief in young people, she embodied an absolute
certainty that what lay ahead was a better future. If nothing else can capture the real essence of the
“pay it forward” concept, I submit that we can see it, feel it, and live it through the life and the memory
of one beloved Carol Kleban, whether in an ongoing way through the scholarship fund set up in her
memory or in the literally limitless examples in our own memory of how she touched our hearts, our
minds and our future. Pay it forward, indeed. Sleep now, my friend, we’ll take it from here.

every aspect
of this unique During the 2014-2015 school year, our Centennial Gala, the culmination
educational of a year of centennial celebrations, was a huge success. This special
institution. celebration, highlighted by a stirring performance by our own Leslie
Uggams ’60, also marked the initiation of the Dr. James Dawson Fund for
Broadway Scholars. Honoring Dr. Dawson as he completed 20 years as
Head of School, this fund will help young actors complete their education
while continuing to take their bows on Broadway. We are looking forward
to sharing the future publication, “Celebrating 100 Years”, a history of
PCS, which has been researched, compiled, and edited by John Tucker.
This spring, we welcomed five new trustees to our board. Melanie Harris
‘91 and Heather Stein ‘90 join the board as alumni members. Melanie is
Head of Marketing & Investor Relations at Centerview Capital, a private
investment firm, and Heather is a top real estate salesperson with Brown
Harris Stevens. While at PCS, both Melanie and Heather studied at the
School of American Ballet, and Heather danced professionally, both
nationally and internationally, before transitioning to a successful career in
real estate. Susan Gluck Pappajohn ‘79, (PCS alumna and parent of Alex
‘16), a former soloist with New York City Ballet and CEO and Founder
of Arthenia Arts, joins as a regular trustee. Raushan Kabykenova Sapar
(parent of Aisha Abuova ‘19 and Yerke Abuova ‘19) is President of West
& East Art Group. She joins the board as a parent trustee and brings
particular expertise in the visual arts. Finally, Nina Levent, CEO of West &
East Art Group, is also an expert in visual arts and in nonprofit leadership,
and she joins as a regular trustee.
I’d like to express my gratitude to the outgoing board members: Rachel
Antonoff ’99 and Greg Abbott, who both completed their terms this
spring; Jack Murrin leaves the PCS Board having completed 4 years as
trustee and having strengthened the work of our Finance Committee
over the last two years as its Chair and as Treasurer of the board. Marilyn
Yanowitch departs having completed nine years as a trustee, serving
as Secretary of the board and Chair of the Institutional Advancement
Committee. We are deeply grateful to all of them for their commitment
to PCS over these years.

As I started this letter, and considered the word, “passion”, there is one person whose face came
to mind immediately. Carol Kleban, who passed away suddenly in June, had an enduring passion for
the work of PCS. After retirement in 2013, Carol continued to be a presence at the school, and
in this past year, worked together with a core group of alumni to establish an Alumni Association
Council at PCS. The establishment of this Council was so important to Carol, as it reflected her
deep connection to so many of our alumni. It is hard to imagine PCS without Carol’s enduring
positive presence, but we can best honor her by continuing our commitment to the work about
which she cared so deeply.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my deepest gratitude to the faculty, staff and
administrators who, under the leadership of James Dawson, continue to help PCS strengthen and
grow in its mission. Deepest thanks to each of you for supporting their work for these talented,
passionate children; I hope that we can count on your continued support as we build for the next
century.

to the Tony Randall Theatrical Fund for pledging a lead gift of $100,000.
This year, we implemented a Second Century STEM Initiative to strengthen our

helped us to exceed our $50,000 Senior Class Gift goal.
On June 27, 2015, PCS lost a beloved longtime staff member and cherished friend of
our community. For more than 36 years, Carol Kleban tirelessly devoted herself to
PCS, serving as a Teacher, Principal, Associate Head of School, and most recently
as our Alumni Liaison. We will honor Carol’s memory with a celebration of her
life, which will be held at the School on Saturday, October 3, at 10am. PCS alumni,
faculty, staff, and friends who over the years were touched by Carol’s great kindness,
warmth, and generosity of spirit are encouraged to attend this very special event.
This autumn, our stretch of West 60th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam
Avenues, will be known as PCS WAY. Members of the PCS community will gather
for a special ceremony to unveil the new street signs.
We also encourage you to “save the date” for the PCS Annual Benefit, which will
take place on Monday, February 29, 2016. The event, which will feature some of our
community’s most talented student performers, will benefit the school’s Tuition
Assistance Fund.
I, again, thank you for your incredibly generous support of Professional Children’s
School.
