Pottery
In southeastern Ohio, pottery started as a raw material, clay taken from the ground by pioneers and
farmers who used it to make practical household items. It grew into an entire industry with skilled
craftsmen – the descendants of those pioneers – hand making and painting attractive dinnerware,
delicate art pottery, sturdy stoneware crocks and decorative ceramic tile.
Pottery has evolved into a popular consumer good made by modern manufacturing facilities – still
employing those skilled craftsmen – and shipped around the world. Antique art pottery pieces, those
produced in the early part of the century by the original firms and their creative decorators, have become
valuable collectibles. Pottery is still made today in the communities of Muskingum and Perry counties
and has become a proud symbol of our local heritage and culture; it has become our tradition. Pottery
is such an important part of our heritage that the communities in our area celebrate every year in
July with “Pottery Lovers Week” when we host several conventions, festivals, auctions and other
pottery-related events. Join us and experience why pottery has made us famous.

Hartstone Ohio Stoneware Factory
Pottery is a rich tradition in Muskingum County, once the Pottery Capital of the world. Today that tradition lives on
through Ohio Stoneware. Started in 2005 by Ross & Tiffany Pattison, Ohio Stoneware has grown to three locations
manufacturing a variety of stoneware including fermentation crocks, pet feeders, mixing bowls, dinnerware,
gardenware, and tableware. With the acquisition of Hartstone Pottery at 1719 Dearborn St. in 2019 they were able
to expand their production to include hand painted ware as well as offer retail sales open to the public.
The Hartstone Ohio Stoneware Factory Outlet offers two stories of shopping delight. The first floor offers a large
selection of first quality products and the basement has pallets of seconds at bargain prices! If you visit the store
Monday-Friday you will see pottery being hand decorated by a decorator.
Group tours are welcome by appointment and there is a large parking lot for bus parking, public restrooms, and a
sitting area for those who aren’t into shopping. When visiting the factory outlet you can plan for a 60 minute stop
which will include a 30 minute tour of our manufacturing facility and 30 minutes for shopping. On the tour, visitors
will see first-hand the pottery manufacturing process from start to finish and experience what it’s like inside a
pottery factory. All purchases can be bagged, boxed, and labeled to travel on the bus and shipping is available for
those who don’t want to take items home.

Antiques
As the home of the nation’s first federally funded highway – the National Road, as well as navigable rivers, Muskingum County
was the transfer point for some of the nation’s most prized possessions during the 19th and 20th centuries. From pottery and
glassware, to furniture and more, some of America’s finest treasures can be found at the numerous antique stores in the area.
We invite you to relive history as you make the most of your Muskingum County experience by visiting our antique stores.
