Mission Oaks Gardens is a beautiful urban garden located in Zanesville, Ohio. It exists
quietly and virtually undetectable from the street in a residential neighborhood. More
than seven acres of gardens showcase hundreds of rare and unusual plants including a
collection of azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias and conifers. Perennials, annuals and
wildflowers fill the gardens year-round. The gardens also feature two waterfalls, a natural
bog, perennial garden, walking paths, creek, gazebo and one of the most renowned
conifer gardens in the state. The nearly two-acre conifer garden displays over 300 trees,
many of which are not native to North America. These trees represent more than
90 species within more than 50 genera. In 2010 Mission Oaks Gardens was acquired by
the Muskingum Valley Park District through a grant from the Clean Ohio Conservation
Fund to ensure the preservation of these exceptional gardens for the enjoyment and
education of generations to come.

Pottery

In southeastern Ohio, pottery started as a raw material, clay taken from the ground by pioneers and
farmers who used it to make practical household items. It grew into an entire industry with skilled
craftsmen – the descendants of those pioneers – hand making and painting attractive dinnerware,
delicate art pottery, sturdy stoneware crocks and decorative ceramic tile.

Pottery has evolved into a popular consumer good made by modern manufacturing facilities – still
employing those skilled craftsmen – and shipped around the world. Antique art pottery pieces, those
produced in the early part of the century by the original firms and their creative decorators, have become
valuable collectibles. Pottery is still made today in the communities of Muskingum and Perry counties
and has become a proud symbol of our local heritage and culture; it has become our tradition. Pottery
is such an important part of our heritage that the communities in our area celebrate every year in
July with “Pottery Lovers Week” when we host several conventions, festivals, auctions and other
pottery-related events. Join us and experience why pottery has made us famous.
