INTRODUCTION Poetry Recitation is a competition organised by the Ministry of Education. The competition aims to encourage the use of English through meaning, sound and the linguistic styles of poetry. It boosts students’ performance and creativity as they express themselves confidently in the English language. “Poetry Recitation is about conveying a poem’s message through its language. All words of the poem must be pronounced correctly, paying attention to the volume, rhythm and intonation to enhance the recitation. A strong performance will rely on a powerful internalisation of the poem rather than distracting dramatic gestures”.
POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL ELIGIBITY This competition is open to students of government-aided schools from form 1 to form 3 only. Each team comprises 2 members from the same school. The winners from previous years may participate in the current year but the poem and recitation must not be an exact replica.
POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL COMPETITION FORMAT This competition is divided into two sections as follows: 1. Section 1: Prepared Poem Each team will recite a prepared poem on a given topic for not less than 5 minutes and not more than 7 minutes. A warning bell will be sounded at the 5th minute and a final bell will be at the 7th minute. The timekeeper will announce the time taken by each team right after the recitation. 2. Section 2: Impromptu Poem Each team will be given a topic and a quarantine time of 10 minutes to prepare the impromptu poem. Each team will recite an impromptu poem on a given topic for not less than 2 minutes and not more than 3 minutes. A warning bell will be sounded at the 2nd minute and a final bell will be at the 3rd minute. The timekeeper will announce the time taken by each team right after the recitation.
POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL POETRY FOR SCONDARY SCHOOL COMPETITION FLOW 7:40 am - 8:15 am Registration for Session 1 (Bilik Bacaan) 8:30 am Session 1 begins (Bilik Media) After Each Session Ends All teams for the said session will head to Quarantine Room (Bilik Komputer) After 10 Minutes Impromptu begins (Bilik Media) according to the team order Note: Kindly ensures that all procedures pertaining bringing students out for competitions is duly observed (safety first). Please make sure your team register at least 15 minutes before your session starts. There will be 6 stations in the Quarantine Room (each has pencils, papers, a dictionary and a sealed envelope containing a topic. 10 minutes given for preparation. After each group finishes the impromptu, kindly wait in the Media Room until all teams are done.

If the teams in the first session finish early, the next session will continue straight after. For example, 5 teams in Session 3 finish at 8.50 am. Session 4 will start at 8.50 am. Please ensure all the procedures pertaining bringing students out for the competition are duly observed. Safety first.
