Welcome to the launch of our new magazine Poolside with National Pool Route Sales. We hope you enjoy our first issue and perhaps learn some business tips in the process. Our magazine is meant to be well-rounded with articles by Charles Baird on business improvement as well as ads and coupons from manufacturers and recipes from guest chefs.
One of the most exciting aspects of our magazine, starting in the second issue, will be our travel section sponsored by Preferred Travel out of San Diego, California. In these articles, Nichole Chang will describe different vacation opportunities and a schedule of excursions that can be taken with the potential to expense some or the entire trip. Who doesn’t like to travel?
We do not intend to be a boring publication about the world or the pool service industry. If you are searching for Senate Bill Numbers, this is not the magazine for you. However, we will at times be writing about certain Bills on the Senate Floor we believe will have a severe positive or negative effect on our industry should they pass.

SUNBLOCK:
DOES HIGHER SPF REALLY MEAN MORE PROTECTION?
“Anything over SPF 45 is just silly.”

The fact of the matter is, there is no sun block that offers 100% protection. According to Spencer, an SPF of 15 blocks about 94% of UVB rays, an SPF of 30 blocks 97% and an SPF of 45 protects against 98% over rays. That being said, anything high is purely left up to the marketing department of sunscreen companies. Naturally, people think the higher the number the safer you are. While there is some truth to that, keep in mind that there is no protect on that market that gives you 100% of protection from harmful sun rays.
Whatever product you choose to lather up with during your sunny poolside days, experts recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen. Be sure to keep a bottle near by as well, as you should reapply every 2 hours.

SALT VS. TRADITION CHLORINE

As usual, there is a dispute between pool service professionals as to the eficacy of the salt system, whether the salt system is better for a customer’s pool than the traditional method of sanitizing. However, we will cover this dispute at another time. Today we want to approach Salt vs. Chlorine from a proitability perspective. Most pool service professionals believe a saltwater pool is better than traditional sanitation because you add less chlorine to the pool and this reduces your chemical costs. It is true a saltwater pool will use much less chlorine because the salt is converted into the sanitizing agent through the salt system. However, a saltwater pool will use more Muriatic Acid and as all pool professionals know, Muriatic Acid is more expensive than chlorine.
Many pool service professionals claim to earn a great deal of money selling salt systems and this is partially true. However, once you sell your customers the salt system, most of your future revenue from chemical sales disappears. You can sell your customers the bags of salt, but how much can you earn on a $10.00 bag of salt? Salt cells must also be serviced, approximately once every six months, but neither selling salt nor the cell maintenance is all that proitable for most pool service professionals; and most pool service professionals do not charge for salt or the salt cell service.
If you are adamant about installing salt systems, be certain to pencil out your expected proit for the sale of the equipment and all servicing of the system. By penciling out your proit, amortized over the life of the system, you will have a better understanding of what is more proitable: the salt system or just plain old chemicals. Both can be wonderful sources of income if you are charging your customers appropriately. If you are not charging for chemicals and you are not installing salt systems and charging for the appropriate services, you are deinitely losing revenue.
If you are charging for chlorine and acid, compare the revenue and proit received from this revenue stream against the salt system revenue stream and determine which is best for your company. If the salt system pencils out best for your company, talk to a manufacturer about a special deal for selling only their salt systems. If selling chlorine and acid to your customers makes more sense for your bottom line, stay traditional.
Either way, by penciling out your proit for each revenue stream, you will experience more choices for your company and a better idea of your proit potential.

ffHEALTHIER CHOICES = A HEALTHIER BUSINESS
One of life’s necessities that can negatively affect our daily productivity is meal choice. What you eat and the quantity of a meal has a great deal to do with your level of productivity and believe it or not your motivation.
Most of us are in a hurry during the day and a quick hamburger and fries or hot dog and fries go a long way toward satisfying that immediate need for sustenance. However, it is that very sustenance that can cause us productivity issues.
Just about any fast food will cause some kind of productivity crash. The level of the crash will be determined by how balanced of a meal you eat and the quantity ingested. This is not only true concerning what you eat at lunch, but also what you eat the night before.
If you eat poorly and drink alcohol the night before an appointment or job, it will affect your ability to communicate effectively in both the mental and physical processes. Regardless of what you may have been conditioned to believe, most fast food and/or alcohol will affect every aspect of your job performance.
One of the ways to counter this effect is to eat healthier. If you must have fast food, have a salad instead of fries. Have fish tacos instead of that hamburger. Have a boneless, skinless chicken breast with vegetables.
If you really want to sharpen up for that appointment or the rest of the day, have a smoothie made with greens and one green apple. You can also prepare your own healthy lunch.

Preparing your own lunches can serve three functions:
1.
You create the meal you want and you are not at the mercy of whatever fast food restaurant happens to be in eyesight when you decide you need sustenance.
2.
You save money on those fast food meals.
3.
You actually earn more money because you have greater energy and can think clearly.
If you have no afinity for home cooking, choose healthier eating establishments that you pass everyday on your route. The best food choices for success during the week is a more balanced meal of vegetables, low-sodium, low-fat meat or ish products and save the heavy sodium and fat laden meals for the weekend when you can couch-potato.
