Q: COULD YOU PLEASE PROVIDE A BIT OF BACKGROUND ABOUT YOURSELF? A: I became involved in diplomacy through a combination of academic studies in the field of international trade & international relations and pure coincidence. After completing my degree in international relations, I pursued my career in the field of investment banking and one day I came across a job offer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I decided to apply. Eventually, I was fortunate enough to be selected for a diplomatic position in 1998 and have not regretted ever since. I have had the privilege of serving the Czech Republic in various diplomatic capacities for over two decades. Before my assignment here in Thailand, I held positions in several key embassies (India, Australia, USA), gaining valuable experience in international relations and diplomacy. I also served as Director of Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague. Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THAILAND AS AN AMBASSADOR? A: I have had the honor of serving as the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Thailand for the past 1,5 years. It has been a remarkable experience, allowing me to deepen the ties between our two nations. Q: HOW BIG IS THE CZECH COMMUNITY IN BANGKOK (THAILAND)? IF YOU ARE TO PROMOTE ANY CZECH PRODUCT(S), WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY? A: The Czech community in Thailand is relatively small consisting mostly of mixed marriage couples. There are around 50-60 thousand visitors coming to Thailand from Czechia every year. If I were to promote a Czech product, it would undoubtedly and traditionally be our world-renowned crystal glassware. The craftsmanship and quality of Czech crystal are unmatched, making it an exquisite choice for any occasion. It embodies our nation's dedication to artistry and precision. Czechia is known for its rich cultural heritage, including its historical landmarks and twelve UNESCO World Heritage sites. Czechia has always been one of the most industrialized countries in the world. Companies like SKODA (automotive), TATRA (heavy trucks), Skoda machine tools), AERO (aerospace, light fighter jet manufacturer), LINET (world leader in sophisticated hospital beds), CZ-COLT (pistols and rifles), CSG (defense industry) have been leaders in their fields. Many globally known companies like KIWI.COM or AVAST have their origin in our country. Czechia is also renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, such as Czech crystal and glassware. Additionally, the Czech Republic has made significant contributions to fields such as literature, music, and sports, with notable figures like Franz Kafka, Antonin Dvorak or Bedrich Smetana. Czechs are keen in all sorts of sport. Names like Martina Navratilova, Ivan Lendl, Petra Kvitova, Pavel Nedved, Petr Cech, Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal will definitely ring the bell with sport fans. Q: WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH DURING YOUR TERM AS AMBASSADOR TO THAILAND? A: The goals for further developing cooperation between the Czech Republic and Thailand encompass various sectors. Specifically, we aim to enhance trade and investment ties, promote cultural and people to people exchanges, strengthen tourism cooperation, and encourage educational collaborations. The focus sectors include manufacturing, medical devices, automotive, aerospace, defense industry, information technology, tourism, and cultural exchange programs. Q: WE HAD FACED SUCH CHALLENGES IN THE PAST 2-3 YEARS... THE PANDEMIC, THE WAR IN EASTERN EUROPE ETC. HOW IS THE CZECH REPUBLIC HANDLING THE SITUATION AND ANY ADVICE FOR ANY TOURIST WHO WANT TO VISIT YOUR COUNTRY IN THE SOONEST? A: The past few years have indeed been demanding for the global community. The Czech Republic has shown resilience and adaptability in the face of these challenges. Our healthcare system and government agencies have worked tirelessly to manage the pandemic's impact. For tourists considering a visit, I would recommend to plan it as soon as possible. The Czech Republic is eager to welcome visitors and has implemented measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Q: YOUR JOB SOUNDS VERY DEMANDING. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR LEISURE TIME? AND ANY WORDS TO YOUR FELLOW BANGKOK CLUB MEMBERS? A: Balancing the demands of diplomacy does require careful time management. While my responsibilities as an ambassador keep me busy, I do make an effort to find some free time for personal pursuits. In my leisure time, I enjoy exploring different parts of Thailand, immersing myself in the local culture, and discovering the country's natural beauty. Thailand offers a diverse range of experiences, from bustling cities to serene beaches and lush landscapes. Each region has its own charm and attractions, and I have had the opportunity to visit places such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ko Chang, Ko Samet and other places. Sport is my greatest asset to keep balanced lifestyle. Yoga, tennis, badminton, sailing, running and basketball keep me alive at difficult times. To my fellow Bangkok Club members, I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support. Our shared experiences and endeavors contribute significantly to the strong bond between our nations.
