Top 15 Benefits of LED Light Upgrades
Energy Efficiency is Just the Beginning
When it comes to the impact of LED lighting, there seems to be no limit.
Initially, many organizations focus on the dollars they can save by consuming less energy. After all, isn’t that the
impetus of most energy conservation projects? And it’s true, less energy used equals less money spent.
But with LEDs, those savings are just the beginning. Making energy improvements like lighting upgrades create a
domino effect, with additional benefits spreading throughout the organization—all directly impacting the bottom
line. We’ve broken our top 15 benefits into groups of five based on the three biggest impacts of LED lighting:

Town Managers and Local Governments
Energy and utility costs constitute a substantial part of the municipal budget.
Town managers strive to develop long-term strategic planning goals, identifying projects on which it's worth
spending scarce resources. When local governments reduce energy costs, those funds can be returned to
taxpayers or invested in other programs and services, helping managers stay on budget while achieving their
goals.
City and town governments can make schools, municipal offices, police and fire departments, and other public
buildings more energy efficient—just by switching to LEDs. These projects have relatively low upfront costs and
rapid ROI. For example, simply switching to LED fixtures on an outdoor street, walkway, parking lot, or in indoor
downlight applications can make a significant difference.
For city and town governments, LEDs can keep citizens happier and
safer while lowering energy costs.
Managers and Manufacturing Facilities
Finding ways to increase plant productivity and decrease operating costs.
Plant, facilities, and maintenance managers are responsible for keeping plants running as efficiently. They strive
to make their facilities safe to avoid hefty fines and citations. They're also challenged to increase productivity and
decrease operating costs. And they must keep production downtime to a minimum because time is money.
Energy upgrades don’t have to result in significant downtime—and they’re a great way to increase efficiency, safety,
and productivity while reducing costs. And starting with lighting upgrades can have an immediate impact with a
significant return on investment.
For plant managers, LEDs can improve safety and boost productivity
while lowering costs.

Managers and Owners of Commercial Properities
Energy is often the single largest operating expense for commercial properties.
A property manager must find the balance between keeping maintenance and operating expenses down, while also
providing an updated and aesthetically pleasing space. The more desirable a property is to rent and occupy, the
better.
Switching to LEDs allows commercial building owners and their business occupants can increase profits, reduce
operating expenses, increase property asset value, and stretch operating budgets. Returns on energy investments
are wide and deep, ranging from increased cash flow and lower utility bills.
"My tenants pay the electric bills. How does an LED upgrade benefit me as a property
manager or owner?"
Energy efficient and eco-friendly: Cost-conscious and eco-friendly renters care about energy-efficient
buildings. An ENERGY STAR® or LEED certified building shows your commitment to the environment
Better quality of light: The space will feel and look better, creating an inviting ambiance
Higher rental property rating: Rental property categorized into three types – A, B, C
- The higher the rating, the higher you can charge for rent
- Poor energy efficiency will result in a lower rating
Common areas: Who pays for the utilities in these spaces? The property owner
For commercial property owners, LEDs can translate into savings
while improving security and ambiance for occupants.

5 Ways LEDs Save Money
Saving money is the most popular reason to switch to LEDs. But lowering energy costs
is just one way lighting upgrades reduce operating expenses.
1 LEDs last much longer than fluorescents
Therefore they DO NOT have to be replaced as frequently.
If you’re dealing with frequent lamp, ballast, or fixture outages,
it is time to consider LED lighting technology.
2 Focus time on uptime and productivity
Let maintenance focus on keeping critical equipment
properly maintained NOT on lights. And more comfortable
lighting levels reduce headaches and absenteeistm
3 Decrease administrative costs
LEDs significantly reduce short-term maintenance costs and
eliminate the need to buy and store large supplies of lamps.

than conventional incandescent lights and cut energy use by more than
80%. – Energy.gov
4 LEDs increase safety and reduce injuries
LEDs reduce common workplace hazards—and workers’
comp claims—keeping employees safer. And because they
don’t transmit heat, they don’t cause burns.
5 Lower Carbon Footprint = Lower TCO
Environmentally-friendly LEDs consume less energy,
reducing costs. Industrial users can lower lighting electrical
costs up to 80% by upgrading their lighting systems.
“ I just wanted to let you know that, after seeing two months electricity invoices, we have seen a
savings of $1,496 our first month and $1,358 the second month. These numbers are even higher
than the projected savings of $1,101 that was stated in your analysis. Thank you for all of your help
and effort on this lighting project, it was a great success.”

5 Ways LEDs Improve Safety
Keeping employees safe is critical. Not only does it ensure everyone is healthy and
whole, but it also reduces workers’ comp claims and OSHA violations.
1 LEDs DO NOT need to be replaced as often
Eliminating the need to change lamps frequently reduces the
amount of time workers spend changing bulbs, which means
less time working at heights or handling glass.
2 Decrease acccidents and injuries
Eliminating the need for frequent lamp changes means
fewer falls and burns. LEDs emit very little heat compared to
incandenent bulbs that release 80% of their energy as heat.
3 Better Light = Better Visual Acuity
No need to set up temporary lighting to work on equipment.
Cords are a severe tripping hazard (especially in low light),
resulting in slips, trips, falls, cuts, and accidents.

adequately lighted whenever an employee is present. – OSHA
4 LEDs decrease lamp breakage
Glass bulbs with filaments and glass tubes break easily and
often, exposing workers to broken glass.
5 Fewer hazmat clean up incidents
Fluorescents contain mercury, making them hazardous when
they break. LEDs have no mercury, are breakage resistant,
and largely immune to vibrations and other impacts.
LEDs provide better-quality, more-consistent light, which improve conditions
and can help prevent OSHAs top-cited violations.
#1. Fall Protection - Less ladder time and clearer lines of vision can prevent falls
#2 Hazard Communication - Well-illuminated signage can help call attention to important information

5 Ways LEDs Improve Your Environment
We perceive 80% of our surroundings through our eyes. Conserving energy with LED
lighting can make people more comfortable and encourage them to stay longer.
1 LEDs increase the market value of property
One often missed benefit is the value of the asset. LEDs are
a capital improvement for a building. And the right
ambience entices people to stay longer and spend more.
2 Consistent light quality and color
LEDs prevent shadowing and maintain consistent lumen
output. Not only will colors remain true, the light output
remains stable throughout the lifetime of the bulb.
3 Improve parking lot visibility
A dark parking lot can make your guests feel
uncomfortable. LED lighting boosts light levels and you’ll
get an unbelievably brighter—and safer—parking lot.

4 Security camera footage
High performance LED luminaires help make video
surveillance footage crisp and clear.
5 Crime can decrease property value
Darkness creates a feeling of personal insecurity and
encourages criminal behavior. LEDs play a role in impeding
criminal activity and are easy to implement.
LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and
diffusers that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient for
many uses such as recessed downlights and task lighting. With other types of
lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than
half of the light may never leave the fixture. – Energy.gov
