I graduated with the class of 1972 with a major in Business Education. When I was in elementary school, my first grade teacher had such an impact on me that I knew that I wanted to become a teacher, and that never wavered. I was born and raised in Greensboro, Alabama. Upon graduating from college, I moved to Michigan and worked for the city of Detroit doing clerical work. I completed student teaching at Louisville Central High School and filled out an application for a teaching position before I left. A year later, I was contacted by the Louisville Board of Education with an offer for a teaching position. Of course, I accepted! My first teaching position was at Shawnee High School, then Stuart High School, followed by Fairdale High School, Fern Creek High School, and then Louisville Male High School for 20 years. There was never a dull moment! I enjoyed it very much!!! Yes, 37 years!! I retired from Jefferson County Public Schools after teaching for 37 years. My husband, Lonnie, and I have two children, Dr. Candice Johnson, and Gregory Johnson. My son Gregory is a Kentucky State graduate. I am a proud member of the local and National Kentucky State Alumni Association.

His distinguished professional career included senior positions in regional accreditation at North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, now the Higher Learning Commission in Chicago and Middle States Commission on Higher Education in Philadelphia. He was later appointed Deputy Commissioner of Higher Education at the New York State Education Department and was New York state’s State Higher Education Executive Officer (SHEEO), of which he is now SHEEO Emeritus. In 2000, to welcome the new century, Dr. Patton was honored to deliver the keynote address at his Alma Mater’s Founders’ Day Convocation. Patton served as Convener for the 50th (Golden) Reunion of the Class of 1969. Under his leadership The Class of 1969 Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established to be awarded annually to a deserving student who demonstrates academic excellence, community betterment, leadership and social awareness—core values deeply inculcated into the Class. Most recently he was appointed to the Kentucky State University (KSU) Board of Regents as the Alumni (out of state) member and was privileged to have been twice unanimously elected as its Chair. Gerald met Linda Williams (KSU Class of 1971) at KSU in the Fall of 1967; they look forward to celebrating 54 years of marriage in August 2024 and reside in Rancho Mirage, CA.

I have a sister, Vicki, who still resides in Jackson. My early education was in the Jackson State College community beginning with nursery school, kindergarten and the Laboratory school grades 1 through 8. On completion of the eighth grade I attended Lanier High School. It was at this point that I began my athletic career playing scholastic football and baseball. Yet, I had played baseball in summer leagues since the age of 10. It was during this period I developed my sense of social activism in what has been termed "the turbulent 60's" when Jackson Mississippi was a "bastion of segregation" with fervent civil rights activity. Specifically, I marched and demonstrated with Dr. King, Stokely Carmicheal, James Meredith, Charles Evers, and Aaron Henry at other times with others based on the purpose of the demonstration. My activism led to me and my classmates and friends founding a community service organization named "Organization of African American Youth" known as OBAAY" which was dedicated to improvement and service in our community. This organization existed for approximately fifteen (15) years. My activism included my being one of the first Black students to attend then all-white Murrah High School. I must admit that my attendance was brief because I was not permitted to join the football team "allegedly for safety reasons; so, I returned to Lanier where I graduated. During my attendance at Lanier, I made all city, all conference, and all state in both football and baseball for three (3) years. I also received one of the first scholarship offers to attend an SEC school from Mississippi State University. I began my college education as a freshman scholarship player at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. On Wiley discontinuing its athletic teams, except basl<etball, I transferred to Kentucky State College now University (hereafter "KSU"). My collegiate athletic career was highlighted by my senior year when I served as captain of the football team. This team set the modern record for wins in a season at eight (8) and we played in the 1971 Orange Blossom Classic for the mythical Black National Championship against Florida A&M University. Sadly, we lost 27-9. On graduating from KSU in 1973, I began my full-time employment at KSU in the biology research program. I also worked with the football team as an assistant. After three (3) years I decided that my career path would be in law. So I tested, applied, was accepted in 1975 to the University of Kentucky Law school where I graduated in 1978. My legal career began in the Kentucky Attorney General's office as an assistant. After two (2) years as an assistant, I decided that I wanted to" hang out my shingle-in other words start my own practice; which was done on November 1, 1980. My practice is a general practice as a "solo practitioner" that has spanned over the Commonwealth and in the several surrounding states in state and federal court. It is important to note that I was elected President of the Franklin County Bar Association-the first African American in the Commonwealth to serve over a county bar association. After forty three (43) years I still practice law, but on a reduced scheduled. Yet, law remains my passion. I have received numerous awards over the years and rendered service to my community. Some of my most cherished awards are; Hall of Fame at KSU in football; NAFEO Alumnus of the Year; KSUNAA Alumnus of the Year; Charles Anderson Award; Omega Man of the Year; United Way Citizen of the Year; Frankfort Arts Foundation Sponsor of the Year for continuous sponsorship of Black History Month Programs. I am a life member of KSUNAA and have served as legal advisor over the years to the present. My "Homecoming Open House" was an example of my ongoing love for KSU and its graduates who came back annually to enjoy the event, as well as, provide a place to fellowship and reminisce. I am also a life member of the NAACPhaving represented referred clients in discrimination and employment cases. I am also a life member of the UK Alumni Association and UK Law Alumni Association. I also belong to Prince Hall F&AM of Kentucky and serve as Grand Counselor; the K Club; KSU Hall of Fame; and Team Lagacy. However, my heart and soul remains loyal to KSU. Currently, I am a member of KSU Foundation Board of Trustee and serve as its President. I am divorced with three (3) boys, named-Willie Ill, David and Porter. I also have two grandchildren-Elijah and llya. Onward -Upward and Forward
