This ship sank on Tuesday, 20 October 1936. The
number of passengers at that time was 187

Indigenous people and 39 European citizens. To
commemorate their story, the Dutch government
built a monument to the Van Der Wijck ship. Even
today, the story about the sinking of the Van Der
Wijck ship is familiar. Because in 2013 the story

was made into a film based on the novel by
Hamka with the same title.

The van der Wijck ship that sank in Brondong
Waters, Lamongan in 1936 is said to be an

underwater treasure. The sinking event is marked
by the erection of a monument.

The monument to the sinking of the van der Wijck
ship is located at Nusantara Brondong Harbor.
The monument, said the Head of Culture of the
Lamongan Tourism and Culture Office, Mifta
Alamuddin, is in a location that was previously

thought to be the evacuation site for ship victims.

"The monument or monument was built as a form
of gratitude to the local fishermen who have
helped the victims of the van der Wijck ship
accident,"

The monument is 3 floors long. On the 2nd floor
there is a balcony overlooking the sea. While the

building measures about 2.5 meters x 3 meters

Two plaques are stuck on both sides of the
building with the old Dutch and Indonesian

spelling. "Warning Sign to Penoeloeng-
Penoeloeng Waktoe Sinking of the Van der Wijck
DDC 19-20 October 1936," reads the inscription

on the plaque on the west side.

The plaque in Dutch is behind it or to the east of
the monument. Written on the plaque 'Martinus
