Abstracts due October 1, 2014

The Texas Public Health Association invites abstract submissions for oral presentations and
posters on various public health topics including original research, program implementation
and evaluation, community assessments, public health methods, theories, and issues relating to
health promotion and disease prevention, public health nursing, outbreak investigations,
disaster preparedness and response, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, social
determinants of health and social justice, population health, health administration, public
health partnerships, public health accreditation, school health, aging, and health policies that
affect individuals, groups, communities, and populations at any age or stage in life.
TPHA is a statewide community for discussion, sharing best practices, and networking among

Descriptions of the Abstract Categories
• Breakout Session Oral Presentations are presented for approximately 20-30 minutes
each (including presentation, discussion and speaker turnover). Sessions are scheduled
Tuesday between 9:45 AM and 5 PM and Wednesday between 9 and 11:15 AM.
Abstracts are reviewed and selected by Section organizers for a Section-sponsored
breakout session, often grouped with others around a common theme. This category is
open to non-students and students.
• Posters allow presenters to discuss their projects or research with interested colleagues
in an informal setting during the grand opening of exhibits on Monday evening and
during all scheduled breaks of the conference through the Wednesday morning
breakfast. This category is open to non-students and students.
• Student Oral Competition presentations on any public health topic will be exactly 15
minutes each (questions for all student presenters will be taken after completion of all
the presentations) and are scheduled for Monday afternoon of the meeting. Only one
person per abstract will make the presentation. Non-students may be co-authors but a
student must be the first author and presenter.

Awards and Scholarships: In an effort to encourage student engagement in public health and
participation in the TPHA Annual Education Conference, the TPHA Public Health Presentations
Committee awards Student Travel Scholarships and hosts the Student Oral Competition.

• Student Travel Scholarship: Students in a School of Public Health or related health
science program are eligible to compete for travel scholarships. Two to three students
will be selected to be reimbursed up to $450 for travel. To compete, include a letter of
endorsement from a faculty member with your abstract submission (all materials must
be submitted as attachments in same email) and mark an “X” next to the line for
“competing for student travel scholarship” on the abstract submission form. Recipients
will be announced by November 1, 2014.

• Student Oral Competition: Students in a School of Public Health or related health
science program who are selected for the Student Oral Competition (see above
description of abstract categories) are eligible to compete for $100 award. To be
selected for the competition, students should submit an abstract and mark an “X” next
to “student oral competition” on the abstract submission form. Recipients will be
announced by November 1, 2014.

TPHA Annual Education Conference Abstract Submission Guidelines:

1. Provide all information requested on the Abstract Submission Form (see attached, page
4).

2. Provide at least one learning objective (maximum of three) that specifies your goal
(include a verb) for attendees based on the presentation content.

3. The body of abstracts may not exceed 300 words (must be word-processed, double-
spaced, with at least 11-point font) and should include sections labeled: Objective(s),
Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions (section labels are included in word
count). Please indicate if work is in progress or completed. The work should not be in
the pre-implementation phase. Avoid abbreviations when possible. Tables, graphs,
and charts are not permitted in abstracts.

4. The quality of the submission will strongly affect the outcome of the review. TPHA may
publish all or parts of the accepted abstracts in the Final Program for the 2015 Annual
Educational Conference and the abstract information is exported directly from the
submission without any edits or changes. To ensure publication accuracy, submitters
(not TPHA) are responsible for submission accuracy and completeness.

5. Email abstract submission form (and faculty endorsement letter, if applying for Student
Travel Scholarship) to [email protected] by 11:59 PM Central Daylight
Time on October 1, 2014.

6. Decisions will be sent to abstract submitters by November 1, 2014.
8. If selected, all presenters must complete and submit a Texas DSHS Continuing Education

Disclosure of Potentially Relevant Financial or Biasing Relationship(s) by Speakers,
Authors and Planners of Continuing Education Activities form, which asks for potential
sources of conflict, present employer, degrees and the institution, area of study, and
year degree was awarded, and a description of speaker’s experience or area of
expertise, by December 1, 2014. The form will be sent to you if your abstract is
accepted.
9. All presenters are responsible for their travel and lodging expenses, as well as
registration fees for the conference. You must be registered for the conference no
later than the early-bird registration deadline of January 1, 2015.
10. Meritorious abstract submissions from any category may be considered for publication
in the TPHA Journal.
