Changes in human social behavior across the
ovulatory cycle: Controversies and emerging
resolutions

Trinity 1-3, Friday, 9:00 AM – 10:00AM

A veritable explosion of recent work has tested the idea that there
are changes across the ovulatory cycle in women’s desires and
men’s responses to women. However, these findings remain
controversial, with commentators questioning whether effects are
merely false positives. This talk presents meta-analyses and “p-
curves” that support the robustness of effects in this literature. I
discuss the mysteries that remain.

Self-control and the sense of effort

Trinity 1-3, Friday, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

A prominent model of “self -control,” based on the idea that exercising
self-control relies on a resource that gets depleted with use, has spawned
a tributary literature that identifies glucose as the willpower-sustaining
resource. In this talk I present a meta-analysis of the effect of blood
glucose on four dependent measures surrounding decision making. The
results of the analysis suggest that blood glucose does not function as a
brain fuel, but rather as a motivator, influencing how decision makers
allocate their resources and attention. Resource models of self-control, I
suggest, should be abandoned in favor of computational accounts.

Looming large: Cognitive representations of
relative formidability and social status

Trinity 1-3, Saturday, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM

This talk will summarize research examining how a "mind's-eye" image of the physical proportions of a
potential antagonist is used to represent both relative formidability and social status, where formidability
decomposes into three key facets of threat assessment, namely relative fighting capacity, likelihood of
attack, and assets at risk, and status can derive from prestige as well as dominance. This provides tools for
examining manifold aspects of human psychology, from risk-taking to racial prejudice to synchronous
movement.

FORENSICS PSYCHOLOGY
LECTURER
Dr. David Buss
University of Texas

The evolution of sexual morality.

Trinity 1-3, Saturday, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Standards of morality are fundamental features of human psychology. They guide people’s behavior, the
accolades and punishments they impose on others, and the criteria by which reputations rise or fall. No
domain of human conduct is more heavily moralized than sexuality. Moralized sexual conduct includes
monogamy-polygamy, incest, age of appropriate sexual debut, fidelity-infidelity, mate poaching, sexual
exploitation, prostitution, same-sex sexual conduct, and various forms of sexual treachery. Astonishingly,
theories of morality have almost entirely neglected sexual conduct. We present an evolutionary framework
that articulates 10 classes of adaptations required to understand different facets of sexual morality. This
framework explains sexual double standards, perspectival shifts in sexual morality, and the ubiquity of
moral hypocrisy. Discussion focuses expanding psychology to more fully encompass the moral domain, of
which sexual morality is central and an evolutionary perspective indispensable.

Unmasking the Alpha God.

Trinity 1-3, Sunday, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Depictions of the male Abrahamic god (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) mirror the relationships primates
have had with dominant males across our evolutionary history. Through psychological adaptations
designed to navigate those relationships, humans have projected the rules of the primate social hierarchy
onto religion, particularly rules relating to appeasement and mating behaviors. In turn religions facilitate
submission and sexual control by speaking directly to our evolved psychology. Accordingly, appeasement
displays to God are virtually indistinguishable from those made to powerful male primates. Similarly, mate-
guarding, cloistering, and punishing female “infidelity” are reproductive strategies utilized by males of many
primate species. These strategies are reiterated in scripture, with male gods demanding sexual control of
females, and generally spending a great deal of energy policing the sex lives of their subordinates. Under
the purported auspices of dominant male gods, powerful men have perpetrated violence and oppression to
secure their own evolutionary rewards. These patterns underlie contemporary religious violence, and
highlight the essential role that evolutionary science can play in building more rational, egalitarian, and
peaceable societies.

SWToP INVITED SPEAKER
Dr. Brian Collisson

The evolution of teaching of psychology.

Trinity 1-3, Friday, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The teaching of psychology evolves. Indeed, within the flagship journal Teaching of Psychology (ToP), the
content of teaching research has changed over time to address threats against psychological science,
unethical behavior, and unengaged students. In this talk, I review past threats to the teaching of psychology
and introduce current threats, such as failed replications, student-as-consumer mindsets, and massive
online open classes. I conclude by discussing how the teaching of psychology can adapt to current threats
and not just survive, but thrive.

SAMR INVITED SPEAKER
Dr. Jeff Spies
Center for Open Science

Improving reproducibility and research
efficiency via openness.

Trinity 1-3, Friday, 2:15 PM –3:15 PM

The currency of academic science is the publication. Of the many decisions to be made while designing
studies, analyzing data, and choosing what to report, I am incentivized to make decisions that produce
results that increase the likelihood of getting published (e.g., novel, positive, clean). The problem with this is
not necessarily my bias—that is difficult for me to avoid. The problem is that I am being rewarded for
results, and results cannot be evaluated on their own. Results are contingent upon the underlying methods
by which they were obtained. Methods, however, can be evaluated on their own. Beautiful methods that fail
to produce beautiful results are still beautiful methods. If I am open about my methods, then you have the
context to fully evaluate my results or, ideally, judge and reward my work by something other than results.
In this talk, I will review the challenges for reproducibility and discuss the role of tools, methods, and
workflow in incentivizing openness to improve reproducibility and research efficiency.

Facades, floor plans, and furnishings:
Evidence-based design and health outcomes.

Trinity 1-3, Saturday, 10:15 AM –11:15 AM

Evidence-based design helps practitioners base decisions about the built environment on convincing
research; the goal is the best health outcomes (for both patients and staff). This talk will review research on
the environmental variables (e.g., views, nature, art, layout, television, room occupancy, signage) that have
been studied in the context of healthcare and the challenges to doing this research. Further, the talk will
show how Ulrich’s theory of supportive design (1991) can be used to guide research questions. Findings
from inpatient settings (e.g., Andrade & Devlin, 2015), hospital exteriors (Devlin, 2008), as well as
psychotherapists’ offices (e.g., Nasar & Devlin, 2011) will be highlighted.

PSI CHI FOCUS ON DIVERSITY SPEAKER
Dr. John Pachankis
Yale University

Using clinical science to improve LGBT health:
Translating minority stress mechanisms into
effective interventions.

Trinity 1-3, Saturday, 2:15 PM –3:15 PM

Significant health inequities exist between lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) individuals and heterosexual individuals. LGBT
individuals, for example, are about twice as likely as heterosexual
individuals to experience any lifetime DSM-IV mood, anxiety, or
substance use disorder because of their disproportionate experience
with societal stigma. However, to date, no evidence-based psychosocial interventions for these problems
have been tested with LGBT individuals. This presentation will focus on the psychosocial mechanisms
(e.g., sexual orientation concealment, rejection sensitivity, gender self-consciousness) through which
stigma operates to deplete health for LGBT individuals. Preliminary findings from the first attempts to
employ models of clinical science to incorporate these mechanisms into health interventions specifically
created for LGBT individuals will be reviewed.

Dr. Mauricio Papini

Psychological pain and emotional self-medication.

Art District 4, Saturday, 3:00 PM –4:00 PM

The role of emotional distress in triggering and maintaining drug seeking and abuse behavior has been
extensively documented. Typically, the causal chain assumed in most studies goes from emotional distress
(cause) to substance use (effect). My colleagues and I have recently been exploring the opposite causal
chain, namely, that drug use is triggered by the modulating effect of the drug over emotional distress, at
least in the initial stages of addictive behavior. This hypothesis—known as emotional self-medication
(ESM)—maintains that individuals consume substances that reduce negative emotions. In this talk I will
review the evidence for ESM from a series of studies with selected and nonselected rat strains that are
providing a unique experimental insight into this issue. The empirical and theoretical bases of ESM, its
translational potential, and the future of ESM studies will be highlighted. This comparative research will
have a significant impact in our understanding of the initial stages of substance use disorders in humans.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

TRINITY 1-3, SATURDAY, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

Dr. Christian L. Hart
Texas Woman’s University

Born to deceive.

Do we have an inborn capacity and tendency to deceive others?
Many species exhibit complex social behaviors that give rise to cooperation, sharing, sympathy, and pair-
bonding. However, the same innate social capacities that underlie cooperative and benevolent behaviors
can be used to mislead, cheat, and deceive others. This talk will explore the various ways that species,
including humans, using their capacity for guile to achieve their own ends. Perhaps this capacity for
Machiavellian influence emerged alongside cooperation and sympathy as part of a suite of social
psychological systems that confer adaptive advantages in complex and dynamic social environments.
