Academic Standing Policy
“red tape, white lines, and all the
flags in between”
Section 100: General Information
While attending Utah State University, any student may experience a change in their academic standing as a result of their
combined; 1) total number of attempted credits, 2) semester grade point average, and 3) overall USU grade point average.
With the exception of being placed on semester GPA warning, all students who experience a change in their academic
standing will receive a registration hold prior to their next semester of registration and course selection with the intent of
preventing future semester registration until the student has spoken with their advisor and available academic support
programs.
Section 200: Academic Standings
Depending on their history at Utah State University, student transcripts will be annotated with one of the following seven (7)
academic standings: Good Standing, Semester GPA Warning, Academic Warning, Academic Probation, Academic
Suspension, Second Academic Suspension, and Academic Dismissal.
Good Standing – The academic status assigned to students who have a USU GPA at or above a 2.0.
Semester GPA Warning - The academic status assigned to students who have earned a semester GPA below 2.0
during the previous semester, but whose institution grade point average remained above a 2.0 cumulatively.
Academic Warning - The academic status assigned to students with less than 36 attempted credit hours whose USU
GPA falls below 2.0.
Academic Probation - The academic status assigned to students with 36 or more attempted credit hours whose
USU GPA falls below 2.0, or those students who earned below a 2.0 semester GPA while on Academic Warning.
Academic Suspension - The academic status assigned to students who earn less than a 2.0 while on
Academic Probation - Students may reapply to the University after waiting out a minimum of two semesters
(including Summer Semester)
Second Academic Suspension - The status assigned to students who earn less than a 2.0 during their return
semester after having either served a two-semester suspension from USU, or successfully appealed their first
academic suspension. Students may reapply to the University after waiting out a full calendar year.
Academic Dismissal - The status assigned to students who receive a third suspension from USU. Student who have
been dismissed may seek readmission to USU after waiting out a minimum of five calendar years.
Section 300: Resources
