Ongoing programs and events such as Pool
School, Music Lessons, Horseback Riding, Cooking
Crew, Hip Hop Class, social clubs, community
outings and dances, promote developmental skills
while making friends and having fun.
Sensory Station had 2,750 visits in its second year
since opening in 2015. Sensory Station continues to
be a very popular drop-in opportunity, convenient
and beneficial for both youth and parents. Programs
such as Sensory Swim, Edible Sensory Fun,
Sensory in Motion, and Sensory Art Therapy were
able to combine traditional recreational activities
with a visit to Sensory Station for added sensory
stimulation and fun.
NEDSRA 4H Club completed its first year. Meeting every other Wednesday, the year-round club focused on
exploring new interests, building leadership skills, and making new friends. The highlight was presenting a
project at the DuPage County Fair International Night.
Winter Break Escape Camps, offering school holiday fun, expanded from two to three weeks. Participants
enjoyed movie outings, crafts, trips to museums, games, cooking, and visits to Sensory Station.
Summer Day Camps provided safe and structured fun for more than 70 campers for eight weeks. Five camps,
offered to specific age and ability groups, were jam-packed with arts and crafts, sensory activities, outdoor
games, swimming and field trips.

Adult Services Creating the
stories behind
6 the faces for

40 years …
it is a pleasure
to watch our

participants
grow up with
NEDSRA. Our

adults are
forever young
in spirit, as they

enjoy their
leisure time
with a multitude
of choices in
programs and
experiences.

Cultural Arts is an important area of NEDSRA programming. Whether
it is performing, creating, being in the spotlight or in the audience,
individuals were able to develop skills, realize their potential, and
appreciate the arts through Photo 101, Theater Troop, Variety Club,
Dance Club, Creative Corner, art classes and theater shows.
The benefits of being social are endless. Social clubs, dances, parties,
bingo nights, bowling bonanzas, and seasonal celebrations provide
settings where every individual feels a part of a group, as friendships
and social skills are developed.
Hop on the van, find a seat, fasten your seatbelt…and it’s off to
another adventure. NEDSRA adults don’t miss much that is new, current
or popular. Community festivals, restaurants, shopping at the mall,
catching a movie, baseball games, football games, pool parties and
concerts – you will find our participants there having a good time and
being a part of the action.
Traveling near and far, our adults eagerly await each new trip! Whether
it is an overnight in Chicago, a weekend trip to Milwaukee, an excursion
on Route 66, a day hiking at Starved Rock, or a week exploring the
Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park, every minute of each trip
provides special experiences and memories.
TREC (Transition-Aged Recreation Experiences and Community),
our year-round day program for young adults continues to be popular.
Meeting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, participants plan, shop and
prepare their meals, schedule and plan their activities, volunteer in the
community, and focus on their independence skills.
Being healthy and fit is important for all of us. Regardless of your
ability level, Adaptive Fitness, Water Exercise and Aerobics, Healthy
Cooking, and Bowling Club provide weekly sessions to gain skills,
strength, mobility, coordination and overall fitness.

This year, the Flag Football team had the opportunity of a lifetime, Hockey
as they were able to play a tournament at the Walter Payton Center
in Lake Forest, the practice home for the Chicago Bears! The Bears, Softball Soccer
along with Special Olympics Illinois, put on this tournament that
saw our Huskies go 4-0 in team play. As good as the games were, Golf Flag
our team got even more of a thrill meeting past and present Bears Football
players like Garret Wolfe, Charles Leno, Jr., Rashied Davis and Tom
Thayer, a member of the 1985 Super Bowl team.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Booster Club Supporting
NEDSRA Special Olympics Sports, all athletes got the chance
to attend the Sports Banquet free of charge! This was a great
evening at the Glendale Lakes Golf Course, with a delicious meal
followed by some great dancing. More than 80 athletes, family
members and coaches were in attendance, and we look to increase
that number in years to come!

We implemented 130 EXCEL programs in the

train ride to Chicago, pumpkin and apple picking,
a behind-the-scenes tour at a police station, a trip

Museum, Morton Arboretum, and to NEDSRA’s
Sensory Station. In the summer, NEDSRA offers

Synergy Adaptive Athletics,
a cooperative effort between
NEDSRA and Western DuPage
Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), provides a wide range of adaptive
sports opportunities including archery, wheelchair basketball, boccia, bowling, rock
climbing, fitness, soccer, swimming, and track & field. Synergy also provides equipment
and instructional support to athletes participating through their school teams.
Synergy hosted the Chicagoland Regional Boccia Invitational in December, 2016.
Competitors from 15 states and Canada participated in the two-day tournament. A coach
from Team Canada instructed a Coaches Clinic prior to the Tournament.

Synergy is now officially a part of the Chicagoland
Adaptive Climbing Club, a climbing club collaborative with
Shirley Ryan Ability Lab Sports program and Adaptive Adventures.
Our athletes have the opportunity to climb almost every
Monday of the year, either in Glendale Heights or in Chicago.

Military Veterans Reach for the Stars Awards

Military Veterans

The Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program supports our military veterans who are
injured or disabled and their families. The goal of the program is to improve the whole
health of the veterans through free fitness memberships, personal training for health
goals, and monthly networking events. These events have included latin and country
dancing, yoga, cooking, and healthy meal presentations.

This year we welcomed 27 new veterans into the
Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program. Bridging the
gap from military service to community life, we provide
veterans and their families a “safe place” to get engaged
within the community.

"The program has given me a chance to reconnect
again with other vets, to establish that camaraderie
one felt while serving and to help others similarly

2017 Reach for the Stars Awards

We are very proud of our award recipients and are
so thankful that they are a part of the NEDSRA team!
“Rising Star” Jake Boyko is a student at Elmhurst
College and started with NEDSRA as a Day Camp
Counselor. He is currently a co-leader of Camp
Spectacular and leads Special Olympics sports
and social clubs.
“Superstar Staff” Anne Tully, a full-time Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
Therapist, has been working at NEDSRA for seven years, and has assisted or
led programs in every area during her tenure.
“Superstar Volunteer” Lisa Long is no stranger to Special Olympics and our
theater program, as she has been volunteering with us for many years. She loves
to spend time with her children and grandchildren when she is not busy giving back.

Support Staff Support Staff
and Volunteers
15
NEDSRA has a team of
120 dedicated support
staff who assist, lead
and drive in our seasonal
programs. In addition,
we have approximately
300 volunteers who
supplement our part-
time staff. Whether it is
one program a season,
one day a week, or five
programs a week, all of
our support staff and
volunteers are essential
to our ability to provide
quality programs and
meet the needs of each
participant. We could
not be successful
without their devotion
to NEDSRA and to the
people we serve.
