A Year of
Discovery

Looking back on the 2012-2013 year of service, we are proud
of the accomplishments we have made as a team. We
addressed numerous service, financial, and administrative
initiatives in our Annual Work Plan, and continued to evaluate
our operational efficiencies.

Like all non-profit organizations, as well as local park districts
and villages, we have been affected by the economy and
declining property values. Trying to balance limited resources
with increasing operating expenses is an ongoing challenge.
The last thing we wanted to do was cut services – so we didn’t!

We continue to meet the unique needs of community members with disabilities, and our families are responding
in increased numbers. By allocating financial and staff resources differently, as well as keeping a close eye on the
bottom line, we were able to do more with less. Services to distinct individuals increased by 9%, and the overall
operating budget decreased by 4%. We were able to secure state funding through the Department of Commerce

and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to fund capital projects at
Centennial Complex, in addition to general revenue support
from the Governor’s Office.

Member Partners In addition to the service and financial highlights, we launched
a new website, revised the Financial Policies and Procedures,

Schools

Building relationships with
teachers and students in special
education classrooms is essential
to our growth. Through our
Experiential Community Education
and Leisure program, individuals in
101 special education classrooms
participated in specific recreation
and leisure activities to reinforce
what they were learning in the
classroom.

Early identification of individuals
appropriate for our services
remains a key focus. With our
emphasis on preschool classes,
parents and family members quickly
learn about NEDSRA as a lifelong
resource.

Working collaboratively with
schools does not stop during the
summer months. By being a part
of numerous Extended School Year
summer programs, 826 students
had recreation and FUN interjected
into their day.

10

Inclusion

Inclusion creates unlimited opportunities for individuals with
disabilities. Inclusions rose to 110 during the year, in which individuals
with special needs participated in their home park district or recreation
department programs alongside their nondisabled peers. Whether
assisted by a buddy or participating independently, each individual
became an equal and active participant in his/her community.

The rise of diagnoses within
the autism spectrum has had
a direct impact on inclusion.
Today, children with autism

make up the largest portion of
those being mainstreamed into
a recreation setting.

To increase the understanding,
awareness and acceptance of
individuals with disabilities,
Ability Awareness programs were
implemented in local elementary
schools. Children experienced
what it might be like to have a
disability through simulation
activities.
