Boys Soccer
Western Heights High School 1st XI Soccer successfully took out the NZSS Football Trident Tournament in Auckland with a 6-1 win over Waitakere College. The tournament attracted 24 Colleges from throughout NZ and was played at the McLennan Park in Papakura.
WHHS headed into the quarter- nals
and semi- nals unbeaten, conceding only
three goals and highlighting the strength
of its defense led by Brad Collier-Baker,
Callum Waller and Daniel Cronshaw-
Hunt, along with Gavin Gilbert at holding
Mid- eld.
The nal was not without its challenges
as the team defended their goal during
the rst 20 minutes. The opposition
onslaught resulted in Waitakere going up
1-0. Turning resolute defense into quick
attack, Heights were rewarded with
striker Jordan Stone nding the net with a hat-trick and game-winning performance, giving Heights a 3-1 lead at half time.
Western Heights dominated in the second half, holding possession and territory for much of the spell. A light breeze was an advantage to Heights as Simon Te Kiri, Travis Cornwall and Joe O’Donoghue all scored goals following solid combinations that stretched from one end of the eld to the opposition goal-mouth. Te Kiri’s goal came from a penalty some 40 metres out as he hit a smashing ball high and right of the goal only to curve into the top-right of the net. Goal keeper Ruben Parker made some exceptional saves during the second half, preventing Waitakere from getting back into the game. Replacements Eamon O’Donoghue, Jacob Davis, Simon Fleming, and Josh Donn all contributed an injection of speed and skills into Heights second half performance. The pace of Centre-right player Daniel Freeman, strength of Mid- elder Andy O’Donoghue and solid defense of Cronshaw-Hunt ensured that Heights controlled over seventy percent of possession in the second half, with Cronshaw-Hunt earning the accolade of ‘most valuable player’.
Team Management and Team List:
Daniel Cronshaw-Hunt – MVP of the Tournament, chosen from other team coaches
Finally, the players and staff wish to acknowledge and thank the following people for their valuable support during the year:
• New Coach Iceman Shane Davis who didn’t inch when the goals were scored.
• Mike Gibbons Superman who has been very supportive for the past few years as Coach/Manager and fundraiser.

Girls Volleyball
Enthusiasm, winning attitudes, leadership and team work were all aspects that helped push our Senior Volleyball Girls to a 3rd place win in the second division of the Senior Nationals 2011. Long, hard trainings leading to preliminary rounds proved to pay off as our hard work through these games helped place us in the top 20 for Nationals in Palmerston North. What seemed like endless weekends in the van to and from Tauranga for preliminary and knockout rounds, ended up being lled with laughter, photos, lost shoes and lifetime memories!
With a few injuries and hiccups in the weeks leading up, nationals soon came around fast! The atmosphere and adrenalin from 145 other volleyball teams in the Manawatu Arena soon made the 4 and a half hour drive down an aspect of the past. Next thing we knew, our rst rival team from pool play was Waimea, and the whistle blew.
A tough week of big competition, tiring nights and more laughter landed us in the playoffs for 3rd and 4th in Second division. We had a hard opponent in Otumoetai B, but came out on top and nished 3rd in this division! A great win for the girls which made all the training and 5 set games leading up to this nal a great achievement.
Good luck to the girls in their future endeavours. You all have the potential to go far, especially in volleyball and I hope you continue to play. It has been an honour for me to not only play volleyball with you but also captain you!

2011 has been a very successful year with our school team winning the Rotorua High Schools Pennants Competition and going on to the Baywide Competition.
Our Best Player was our Captain, William Newman and he was ably supported by Shardae Bulkeley, Daniel Shields, Jordyn Fiaola, Beau Fling, Bailey Cottle and Tristan Harnett.
It is a young team and all except Jordyn will be returning in 2012. We have high hopes for their continued improvement in the game.
Their attitude has always been fantastic.

Junior A - “ Our Ball, Our Goal”
It has been a year of challenges and celebrations for our team, tireless hours of sweat, blood (literally) and pain were poured into the 2011 Netball Season.
The season started with a hiss and a roar, with our Junior A Year 10 Netball team participating in the WHHS Multi- Sport tournament. The girls received great praise for their performance
and attitude on the court. They lost their rst game by one goal to the eventual tournament winners, ( rst game nerves I believe) however they placed 3rd overall. The girls also participated in the Bay of Plenty Baywide U/15 Netball Tournament at Mount Maunganui and despite carrying a few injuries the team managed to hold it together and take out 2nd place in their pool.
Throughout the local competition
in Rotorua the girls progressively improved with each performance. We were continuously beating opposition teams by huge margins. Despite this, the girls did not let their guard down during the season. This can be easy to do when games are not so challenging at times. They knew and we knew their biggest match was going to be against RGHS Junior A who were performing equally well beating other teams by big margins also. The draw had us play against RGHS in the nal game of the season. We both came to this match unbeaten. It was without
a doubt a very tightly fought game. A
high level of skill was exhibited by all, but eventually our team girls dominated the game to win 52-39
Congratulations to our girls who were selected to represent various teams in the region: BOP, Waiariki U/13’s and U/15’s, JNC Netball Team, Waikato U/15’s and Rotorua Rep Teams; Celeste Te Hau, Devon Pikimaui, Vicki Taufa, Puahaere Vaka and Georgia McCulloch.
Many thanks must go to Laura Macdonald for her commitment and perseverance with the team. The girls gave her great respect because she kept in constant communication with team issues and gave clear direction to them. The team was very fortunate to have someone of such great calibre to coach them and share her knowledge of the game. Laura herself had her own commitments and busy schedule, playing for the BOP Louis Muir Netball Team,
a local team Whaka Reds and of course BOP. I admired her “No pain, no gain” attitude as it was this no nonsense approach that had the girls ne-tuned for the season.
To the Junior A Yr10 netball team congratulations on a successful netball season.I know that the friendships you built with each other over the season were a key component in building a team spirit that led to your victory
this year. Lastly a huge thank you to MJ (Devon’s mum) and Tracey (Kelsey’s mum) for your ongoing support throughout the season and to the rest of the parents, siblings and whanau, Without your continued support to our children we would not have had the success we had..

Alex Miller on attack in Nationals
What a year for Heights hockey. The
Boys 1st and 2nd XI hockey teams had successful seasons in the secondary school competition. The 1st XI nished 3rd in Division One and the 2nd XI nished 4th in Division Two.
The season completed, we turned our focus to preparation and conditioning for the prestigious National India Shield tournament. The squad headed off to Hamilton for a quad series against St Pauls, Westlake and McLean.
We had three losses against these highly ranked teams and the boys realised that the step up in from division 3 to 2 was going
to be extremely dif cult. This included the dif culty of the pool we were in with our old rivals Rotorua Boys.
Our talented side was able to step up and after two defeats this season we defeated Boys High for the rst time in 6 years of local rounds. We advanced to the top eight securing a place for next year and the opportunity for promotion to the Rankin Cup.
With nothing to lose the boys went out against the undefeated Rangitoto and played the game of their lives and defeated them 4-0. They left everything on the turf and lost the semi to eventual winners St Andrews.
We nished a credible 4th place and were promoted to the top 16 in New Zealand for the rst time in the history of the school.
After tournament, with one last game of hockey remaining, we then looked to the game of the year. The tough task of taking on the superior NSW development side. Our mixed team of athletes, ranging from age 13- 17, put on a magni cent display and defeated them 3-2.
The high-quality accomplishments that we have attained in 2011 enable us to build up to a promising sporting year in 2012.

Girls Hockey
This has been another amazing year for Girls Hockey.
The Girls 1st XI won the WHHS Invitational tournament against NZ ranked teams, some of which included NZ players. They also continued to dominate the Bay of Plenty competition winning both the opening round and the nal round convincingly. For such a young team this was an extremely good achievement after losing 6 players from the successful 2010 season and it was thanks to the incredible ongoing commitment of the coach, Govan Hari.
In preparation for tournament week the team played schools from Tauranga and this unfortunately exposed the need for tougher competition during the season which we will target next year by introducing an Inter-city competition with the top teams from Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.
The team carried out extensive fundraising throughout the season in preparation for attending the Marie Fry Tournament which was held in Dunedin in August. We were incredibly lucky to gain huge support from Southern Trust, local businesses, particularly Grays Funeral Services, the Rotorua Airport, Katmandu and parents.
The tournament was an exciting challenge for the team. Many teams were from private well-funded schools and there were also New Zealand representatives. The team performed well in the rst game coming out victors against Napier Girls High School winning 2-1, although they would go on to regret not taking the opportunity to score some easy chances to make the score higher. The next day would be crucial as it would determine where the team was placed for the next round. Coming out with a 0-0 draw against Otumoetai in the morning meant that the afternoon game was a must win for
the girls. Blood, sweat and tears (literally) were shared amongst the players because they knew how important this game was for them. They were the dominant team with so many opportunities but just couldn’t get the goals away. At the end of the round 3, teams shared the same number of points and the same goal differential and unfortunately only two teams could go through. It boiled down to who had scored the most goals and we missed out by one goal. This meant we could not go through to the nals.
An inspirational talk from the senior members kicked the girls back into gear for the remainder of the games with the team ending up placed in the top 25 schools in New Zealand. The commitment of the players was exceptional with most carrying injuries from bruising encounters from the other teams.
Above: 1st XI Girls Hockey Below: 3rd XI Girls Hockey
We look forward to another successful season 2012. With such a successful season many girls were selected for BOP teams in their respective age groups. In the Under 15 girls team we had Mikayla Hazelwood,Jasmine Hoffman and Kristy Hazelwood. In the Under 18’s team we had Renee Ngatai, Shardae Bulkeley and Laura Clifton. Renee Ngatai and Mikayla Hazelwood were also selected in the Midlands Under 18 Academy and Shardae Bulkeley and Jasmine Hoffman were selected into the Midlands Secondary School Girls team. Renee Ngatai was also selected in the NZ Maori Under 21 Women’s team which is a fantastic achievement. Mikayala Hazelwood was also selected as Umpire of the Tournament at the NZ U13 national tournament.
The team also faced the tragedy of the loss of the beloved Okeroa Douglas who passed away in a tragic accident in July this year. She was one of the senior members in the 2010 girls’ team and was a talented player who achieved at regional, national, and international levels. She was a role model of fair play and absolute commitment to all that she did. Her lovely smile was always in evidence. Her inspiration gave the girls much to ght for and they dedicated this year and the tournament to her. Arohanui Okeroa.
The 2nd XI also had a very successful year under the coaching of Mrs Mullen winning the rst round of the C grade and then going through to place 3rd in the B Grade. The team had many young players and displayed some great teamwork and skills throughout the season. This looks promising for the future.
We were also lucky to have past student Scott Loper volunteer to coach the Girls’ 3rd XI. The team had a thoroughly enjoyable season playing in the C Grade and gained some creditable results. The senior students found it a great way to get some exercise and just enjoy a sport with no pressure.

Spirit of Adventure
Voyage 599 by Grant Atkin
Ten unforgettable days on a boat with 40+ strangers from all around New Zealand. I had heard nothing but good things about Spirit, so when there was an opportunity to go on it, I was super keen to do it. So I applied, and got the go ahead to go on a voyage.
I went on the voyage going from the Bay of Islands, back down to Auckland. Most people going on the same voyage met in Auckland and caught a bus to the Bay of Islands. Everyone had already got to know each other on the bus ride up and it only got better from there once we were on the boat.
Being surrounded by people for the majority of the day, you start to grow quite fond of everyone around you. There are people you have only just met and you’re chatting away like you have been mates for years. One of the best parts is that every voyage is unique. The people on the voyage get to make a list of everything they want to do over the course of the 10 days and the
crew does all in their power to make sure that as much of that list as possible gets done. Getting up for an ice cold swim every morning was a quick and easy way to wake up and it left you with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day.
The ten days seemed to last forever, but when the ten days were up, I felt it went way too fast! Being on Spirit was an amazing experience and I suggest to anybody who
is thinking about doing it that they should de nitely do it.
Voyage 604 by Kahurangi Rapana
20ll Spirit Sailers
How many friends, good friends could you possibly make in ten days? I made 32, while sailing around the Hauraki Gulf. A sail from Auckland to Auckland, stopping overnight at Waiheke Island’s Man o War Bay, Coromandel’s Kawau Bay and Great Barrier Island’s Port Fitzroy and Smokehouse Bay. From the enjoyable raft rides ashore, to the tiring 7 hour hike up to Te Kouma Island’s highest point. I didn’t even mind
sitting at the back of the ship with everyone else, hanging our heads in buckets during the big swells we came across. Spirit of New Zealand was the best experience of my life.
I made some amazing new friends from all around New Zealand, who I’ll never forget. I learnt so much about myself, achieving the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the voyage, building so much more con dence.
For a day all 33 of us voyagers got to run the ship. We had our own plan, including a pool party in the sea, jumping off the boat’s plank or swinging from the yard swing. Also tacking and jibing and we even put up the most sails we’d had up the whole of the voyage. I loved every hour, minute and second of this voyage and leaving brought tears to my eyes. Even the crew was amazing!

An enthusiastic group of ten WHHS Year 10 students took part in a Spirit of New Zealand Trophy Voyage sailing around the Hauraki Gulf. The students were Keely Gage, Lindsey Gemmell, Fraser Gilbert, Andy Innes, Connor McNamara- Spackman, Keziah Hodgson, Matthew Robertson, Alea Wharekura, Kaylee Willoughby, Stephen Wright and our teacher Miss Cleaver.
We sailed on a ve day voyage and participated in a variety of activities where we were awarded points for our accomplishments. We travelled
to Princes Wharf in Auckland on Wednesday, the 10 th August and spent an evening on board the boat before the other schools arrived the next day. We helped load all the provisions and unpacked our bags. The three other teams of ten arrived who were from
Westlake Boys, Tuakau College and St Matthew’s Collegiate from Masterton to compete for the Spirit Trophy. The Crew on the Spirit consisted of the Captain, Engineer, 1st Mate, 2nd Mate, Leading Hand, Cook and three other crew members so altogether 53 people were on board.
During our voyage we had team challenges to get to know everyone and got shown around the ship. We had to make a sand sculpture and compete in mental and physical tasks testing our problem solving skills. All students were allocated a shift to do night watch. We learnt a variety of knots and rafted ashore to participate in activities against the other schools. We learnt how to sail the boat and how to put up the sails. Each morning we had to jump off the boat, into the chilly waters and swim from bow to stern and climb out. De nitely a refreshing start to the day! We sailed into Bon Accord Harbour and rafted into Mansion House Bay visiting the Copper Mines and Mansion House on Kawau Island. Through commitment and determination right to the end, our team was able to come out the winners of the Trophy Voyage gaining the Spirit Trophy from Voyage 604A.
We were all exhausted upon returning to Princes Wharf at 4pm the day it snowed in Auckland. We were all tested in a different environment and gained new skills from this awesome opportunity. Thank you to Miss Cleaver for taking us on such an amazing trip.

Western Heights High School, Rotorua Police and the Western Heights Community Association launched CACTUS (the Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit and Support programme) in Rotorua
CACTUS has been developed in Rotorua by Rotorua Police, Western Heights High School and the Western Heights Community Association,
and is modelled on a very successful programme that has been running in Wairoa for the past few years. The tagline for the programme is “Getting to the Good on the Inside” and it involves an eight week intensive physical training programme for 25 students, aimed at challenging behaviours through physical discipline.
CACTUS was run for the rst time in Rotorua at
Western Heights High School from February to
April 2011. This was an exciting development for young people at this school - and for the wider Rotorua region. Along with the Police, we are very proud to be involved and to make our contribution. It wouldn’t have come to fruition, however, without the input and support from a large number of people, companies and organisations and we are grateful for their support.
Touch Rugby
Touch Rugby has continued to be a sport lled with talented, enthusiastic players. This year a variety of teams competed in Rotorua and Bay competitions, playing with spirit and energy. It is due to this, and the generous support of staff and parents, that WHHS has quali ed for the National Secondary School’s Touch Rugby Tournament in December 2011.
Congratulations to the Senior Mixed Touch Rugby Team who competed at the BOPSS Touch Rugby Tournament at Otumoetai College, Tauranga, on Sunday 13 March. We would like to thank coach DJ MacCauley for his commitment and endelss enthusiasm and look forward to more participation
and success when we kick off again.
Thanks go to the staff and parents who supported our teams in their managerial, coaching or sideline roles. Without your contribution and generosity, we would not have been able to eld so many players.

Baywide 1st Division Champions 2010-2011
Our win is a real credit to the players, management, families and supporters for all their hard work. After winning the 1st Division Championship in 2010 it was always going to a tough ask to repeat that feat. However, under the guidance of skipper Jordan Ngamata-Poi with help from senior players Evan Groves, Brook Amon, Le-Roy Wrigley, Jordan Fiaola, Chase Clarke, Dion Manga and Ben Le-Vaillant, the team backed up the 2010 championship result with a 15-9 win against Otumoetai College.
Up and coming youngsters Chase Kennedy, Dylan Rangitutia, Junior Taia, Haami Jones and Vernon Johnson always ensured good competition for positions in the team. Classy wingers Rawiri White, Tawhiao Morrison and Tamehana Curtis ensured we had plenty of pace out wide to nish off. Add to these players the hard work ethic of Tyson Kahukiwa and Nigel Baker, it was no surprise that the Western Heights High School 1st XV was going to be a team that demanded respect.
Gutsy performances against Manuwera College, Rotorua Boys High School 1st XV and Tauranga Boys 1st XV have highlighted a general improvement in the standard of our rugby and long it may continue.
Thanks to Carleen Martin-James and Guy Ngatai for their support, and a special thanks to Mele, Jaqui, Bub and Tere for their awesome after-match meals. To Debbie, Piripi, Craig, Burt and Richard (linesmen) many thanks for a job well done. Your support was invaluable.

We had another very exciting season this year with a team that consisted mostly of Year 11, 12 and 13 players. Our captain, Laura Clifton, was an amazing inspiration and leader to our team. Once again we had a considerably small side and had to rely on our tness and skills when facing larger teams.
The all-round skill level throughout the competition was outstanding from all other teams. We had an up and down season this year, resulting in fourth place at the nals which were played at Rotorua Girls High School. We were lucky enough to be coached again by Michael Conwell who has had a huge in uence on our team by helping us to overcome the challenges. Waterpolo
Western Heights Water Polo started off with a hiss and a roar this year, our senior boys’ team being the strongest in recent years. They had a win against RBHS for the rst time and this sparked some interest for the team to go NZSS Div 2 in Hamilton. While the boys did not get a win they all grew as players and learnt valuable new skills. Stand out players were; Sam West, Daniel Cronshaw-Hunt, Grant Aitkins, Aidan Sharples and Hugh Spiers (this was his rst year playing water polo and he always impressed).
Our senior girls’ team looked very formidable this year and they had some great wins in the Rotorua tournament including a win against arch rivals JPC. The girls also entered the NZSS Div 2 competition and had an awesome start against Mount Maunganui losing by only one goal, however compare this to 2010 when we were beaten by 12! In our following four pool matches we went through unbeaten and were tied on 8 points with Mount Maunganui and Baradene (who we had already beaten).
We thought we had placed top of our pool on goal differential, however due to a three way tie a FINA
by law was used and we missed out on the nals by a single goal. Needless to say the girls were absolutely gutted and in the play off for 5th/6th they played to nowhere near their potential. While all the girls played extremely well for the majority of the tournament, some key players were; Renee Ngatai, Vicky Page, Ngatai Bennett and Mianna Laing.
A huge thank you to all the parents and supporters who came over for us and to Ngongotaha Four Square for the fruit!
The senior social team had an interesting start to the year with players pulling out and new players showing up. However they always had enough for a team and even though at times they were on the wrong side
of some big score lines they kept going and always nished with a smile on their faces.

We had two junior girls’ teams this year and they were both full of awesome enthusiastic players. Every week our year 9 team had at least 13 and sometimes we had more players than caps! All the girls made some great improvements on both their swimming and their skills. Our year 10 girls only really hit their straps at the end of the season and had 3 wins in a row against teams that had previously beaten them. It is great to have so many junior players coming through to feed the senior teams and I hope all water polo players from 2011 come back for 2012!

The Senior Boys team were 2nd in the 250m Bowl Final, the following students were in the team; Dion Manga, Whare Bidios, Hori Thompson, Darcey Ray Flavel, Rawiri White, Rihari Villi, Jesse Ridings, and Robyn Kinita. These boys were not experienced paddlers at all, this was their rst competition. The coaches were Lee and Rehua Mohi of Awahou who volunteered their services and their valuable time to train these boys which was only 2 weeks of training.
The Senior Girls team were 2nd in the 500m Bowl nal, the following students were Toni Waerea, Kayla Pene, Waimirirangi Cunningham, Felicity Nepia, Rawinia Curtis. Te Rina White, Felecity Nepia and Kayla Pene who has a busy schedule was training for Cactus, Wakaama, and the NZ BMX Championship at the same time. Lexi Hutchison who has been coaching our teams for 5 years has volunteered her services and her valuable time to assist these students. Most of the time there were only 3 girls at training because of other commitments, and only two girls had paddled in Regional and National Competitions.
A big thank to Lesly Setu Galo, Jackie Paul and Mele Manga for their assistance at trainings and the Regatta. Thank you to parents, relations, koro and kuia who supported our tamariki. Western Heights High School values our coaching staff for their services and the amount of time and travelling to and from Lake Okareka and to the Awahou Club they do each year. These are fantastic results.
If students would like to join Waka-ama keep reading our panui, as Waka-ama clubs are beginning trainings for the summer, so students who want to paddle in our Championships need to start training as soon as possible. We need experience out on the water, this is the time.

Mountain Biking
There was a small but keen group of mountain bikers who represented the school in the NZ Secondary School Nationals held in Levin in April.
• Alice West came 4th overall in the Under 16 Girls event
• Nathan Johnston came 3rd overall in the Under 14 Boys event
• Nathan Saunders came 4th overall in the Under 14 Boys event
The weather was wet and the course very muddy, all of these students did extremely well considering the conditions.

Smallbore Ri e Shooting
Western Heights High School smallbore ri e shooters have had another very successful year in 2011 beginning with the Multi-Sport Tournament in April. Dee Duncan was the top individual shooter in this competition and our No.1 and 2 teams were placed 1st and 2nd respectively.
The annual Waikato secondary schools smallbore ri e shooting tournament held in July saw Western Heights High School emerge as winners of both the individual and team trophies. Dee Duncan won the individual trophy. Heights No.1 team took out the team trophy with our No.2 team in second place followed by Te Puke High School in third place.
In the Eley/TSNZ Postal Shoot our boys team (Daniel Johnson-Walker, Jordan McNamara and Hiroki Goh) placed 6th in New Zealand out of 49 teams. Our No.1 mixed team (Dee Duncan, Alana Duncan and Bailey Wood) and our No.2 mixed team (Anthony Robinson, Danielle Hopgood and Jessica Curtis) came 3rd and 4th respectively in New Zealand out of 19 teams. Dee Duncan ranked 5th and Danielle Hopgood 9th in New Zealand out of 65 competitors in the girls individual competition.
In October a Western Heights team competed in the in the Target Shooting New Zealand Inter-Island Secondary Schools Nationals in Wellington.
Team captain Dee Duncan with Bailey Wood and Danielle Hopgood came 7th out of 20 teams from throughout New Zealand. Dee Duncan came 3rd overall and was selected to compete for the North Island and New Zealand Secondary School teams. Dee is a great representative for the sport and a superb role model for other smallbore ri e shooters.
Our smallbore ri e shooters can be very
proud of what they have achieved in
2011. The sport enjoys strong support at
Heights and our veteran competitors are Standing: being pushed by some very good juniors
Mr J Hooker, Mr J Hayward, Bailey Wood, Matthew Whitmore, Jordan McNamara, Daniel Johnson Walker, Mr R Hill Jacqueline Topless, Alana Duncan, Donnine Duncan, Danielle Hopgood

Rowing
Over recent years, with the encouragement of Mrs Wright and Mrs Cooper, a small number of rowers have trained with the Rotorua Rowing Club and competed at North Island and National Secondary Schools events. Over this past year interest has grown considerably and we had 18 rowers competing in the Western Heights Rowing team and along with this growth in numbers has been the emergence of some very talented crews and individuals.
Maadi Cup National Secondary Schools Rowing - March 28 - April 3, 2011
Top crews from the North Island were joined by the best of the South to nd the National Champions in Secondary schools rowing. The 2011 event was the biggest ever rowing regatta in New Zealand with almost 2000 rowers competing, representing 122 schools.
Western Heights made its mark at this regatta, coming in 18th equal out of all 122 competing schools and 10th equal from the 117 schools in the Sculling trophy competition.
While some of the rst year rowers found the intensity of this event a real step-up, our hopes were high for success in the Girls Under 15 Quad and the Senior Boys Sculling events.
The Under 15 Girls took out their heat comfortably, which was an achievement in itself and went straight into the nal; Having come 3rd in the North Island, they realized the challenge ahead of them and rowed a con dent and strong race in the nal to claim a thrilling 2nd place in NZ and top North Island crew.
Girls Under 15 Coxed Quad—2nd in New Zealand
Crew: Stacey Tamblin, Emma Cronshaw-Hunt, Hannah Cox, Alice West, Morgan McHale (cox) Coach: Chris Pearson
The Under 18 Boys Novice Double were also competing at this level for the rst time with Daniel Cronshaw-Hunt and Sam West taking up rowing over the summer. They improved with every race and claimed their place in the nal, eventually nishing a very creditable 8th in New Zealand
In the Senior Boys Double Sculls Riordan Morrell and Hugh Spiers, the North Island Champions, found themselves up against a otilla of top South Island crews. Once again it was a real achievement to make the nal where they placed 6th in NZ.
Riordan Morrell battled to a 3rd in his heat but made his way through the repechage and semi- nals to claim a place in the nal. Riordan was peaking at the right time and made a real impression in rowing away from a top class eld to claim the National Senior Boys Single sculling title. Following this event Riordan Morrell was selected for NZ Junior trials and named in the NZ team for the World Junior Rowing Championship held at Eton, England in August. After some injury problems and crew changes, having been named originally in the Double Sculls, Riordan competed at the Worlds in the Single Sculls and nished with a World Ranking of 17th.
On the basis of these rowing achievements and in recognition of his academic potential, Riordan was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious North Eastern University in Boston where he will continue with his rowing and studies.
In so many ways 2011 has been a breakthrough year for Heights Rowing and we are looking to consolidate this with further success in the 2012 season. The victories in these events has put WHHS on the map as far as rowing is concerned. The strength in the younger rowers also augers well for the future. Western Heights Rowing would like
to thank the Rotorua Rowing Club and in particular the coaches for their support and expertise this season. Coaches: Chris Pearson, Alistair Riddle, Glen Reichardt and EJ Reichardt.
Thanks also to parents for their support, especially Ross Morrell who has accepted much of
the responsibility of regatta
supervision and management.
We are appreciative also of the sponsors who have helped provide caps and bags for the team. Thank you to the West, Cronshaw-Hunt and Cox families.
