ISLAMIC CENTRE CANTEEN
HALAL DIM SUM IN THE HEART of HONG KONG
BY: ATIKA DENAN LEE | IMAGES BY: TAMUASIA
The taste of the halal dim sum at the Islamic Centre Canteen is supposed to be a bit different from traditional Cantonese dim sum due to the absence of lard, which is added as a flavour enhancer to most traditional dim sum. Halal beef, chicken and seafood are used instead of pork in ICC’s dim sum. All the same, the result is simply mouth-watering.
Media and tour agents from Malaysia enjoying halal dim sum in their trip to Hong Kong.
The Islamic Centre Canteen is not only a place to eat, but a place to mingle with fellow Muslims from around the world. The laughter and chatting voices fill up the space with energy, camaraderie and life. Indeed the Islamic Centre Canteen itself is undoubtedly a worthwhile visit – with the food as “double happiness”.

● 5 Best Places to Hike in
Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Suburbs

ADVENTURE
5Best Places to Hike around KUALA LUMPURand
SELANGOR Suburbs SELANGOR
Going out on nature trails and hiking is not only a less expensive way to keep fit, but would also help to de-stress your mind and body. The adrenaline rush fuels the energy, and the sights, sounds, and smell of nature does wonders for the soul. These hiking spots and nature trails make waking up early on the weekends worthwhile.
Here are some of the places TamuAsia has compiled.
1KL Forest Eco-Park (Bukit Nanas) Bukit Nanas Forest
Reserve (now also called KL Forest Eco-Park) is a small patch of original forest sited in the heart
of Kuala Lumpur, at the base of the looming KL Tower, one of the tallest telecommunications structures in the world
– in fact at 421 meters
the fourth tallest when it was completed in March, 1995. Unknown to many, this small but significant green hill still preserves many species and features of the original rainforest that covered Kuala Lumpur before it became a city. Here you can even find monkeys and possibly snakes as well as various birds.
There are several routes that run through the forest reserve, which you can see from the KL Tower. The most popular attraction
is undoubtedly the Forest Canopy Walk that runs on rope bridges over several hundred meters among the shaded treetops. All trails are mainly limited to one side of the hill, with the central portion or highest point taken up by the Tower itself. The main entrance
is via Jalan Raja Chulan,
but an easy alternate way to get to the forest is by taking the Rapid KL LRT train and disembarking at Dang Wangi LRT Station, and then follow the signs.

2FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia)
Perfect for beginning hikers, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
is located in Kepong, accessible via the Selayang- Kepong Highway. For those who wish to have a nice ‘stroll’ without getting too gritty, FRIM’s forest is the ideal beginner’s hill. Best to go early in the morning when people are fewer and the air is cooler.
Depending on your fitness level, the summit can be reached after a 30-minute hike. Be sure to give the high forest canopy walkway a try and stop by the river pool on the way down.
3Bukit Gasing (Gasing Hill)
For those living in PJ, Bukit Gasing (near Jalan Gasing) is a welcome green treasure in the middle of
a concrete jungle. Most people head there after work, starting around 6 in the evening and peaking at 8pm when the jam is more tolerable.
Gasing Hill will ensure all your leg muscles are used as it can go from gradual to steep incline in quick succession. Guaranteed
to give you a sweat. A headlamp/flashlight is a must once nightfall sets in.

4Bukit Tabur (Tabur Hill)
A ‘terrifying’ three- hour endurance hiking circuit, located behind Taman Melawati near Zoo Negara, this trail involves several rock climbs. There is Tabur East and Tabur West. As the world’s longest
and oldest quartz ridge in the world, the stones are sharp and there are several treacherous climbs - the most extreme involving a ‘leap of faith’ down to the stone step below you - a step that is just out of your reach.
Gloves and first aid kits are recommended. And only go during daylight hours, the view atop is beautiful
- one side lies the great concrete jungle of the capital and the other, pure unadulterated real jungle. And yes, because it is real wild territory, monkeys and snakes exist. It’s part of real nature, so just be prudent.
5Bukit Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail
Located right next to the urban sprawl of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bukit Kiara is easily accessible for jogging and cycling area for its residents and neighbouring suburbs. Bukit Kiara provides a more challenging track with its forest trails and steep uphill-downhill hiking circuit.
The route winds around
the hill, and one is greeted with lush greenery and the chirping of birds at every turn. Monkeys make an occasional appearance and can react aggressively if you get too close to them. You might see occasional horse riders since there is a route connecting Bukit Kiara to the Equestrian Club.

As with every activity in the great outdoors, always take safety precautions. The classic hiking rules always apply: always bring a whistle and headlamp/ flashlight, go with a group, know your trail, wear proper shoes with grip, never leave a less able friend trailing behind, and let someone know that you will be climbing the hills and your estimated time of completion

ARTS
DIN OMAR
THE PAINTING OF MY HERITAGE
BY: ATIKA DENAN LEE | IMAGES BY: TAMUASIA
Recently the National Visual Arts Gallery in Kuala Lumpur showcased the work of Malaysia’s highly talented local artist - Din Omar. This exhibition is a continuation of Din Omar’s acclaimed previous exhibitions; namely ‘The Painting of My Heritage - Series 1’, in the year 1998 and ‘‘The Painting of My Heritage - Series 2’in 2000.
The exhibition recalls the painter’s memory through a succession of symbols and practices of the
Seni Budaya Melayu traditions as a national icon, and that which forms the main element of each artwork.
During the exhibition launch, Din Omar mentioned that
the process of
globalisation, where the concept of a country without borders, or of open skies in aviation and travel, make up some of the factors that cause the erosion of Seni Budaya Melayu: where the subtle manners, the modesty and gentleness that had been hallmarks in the psyche of the Malay World are increasingly left out in irony, chewed out in time and then becoming ‘pieces’ of heritage worthy of being placed in a museum or art gallery for future generations to mull over if they care.
In this exhibition series, the Keris or stylised dagger and Tepak Sirih or betelnut ensemble tray of the Malay World are highlighted. Both were first introduced in the series in the mid-1990s. These are part of items that traditionally highlight the artistic and even cultural outlooks that are symbolic to the core of the Malay spirit and heritage; indeed the hidden Malay strength and cultural imagery are the focus. Artistic motifs such as fine symbolic arabesque-like carving is
a manifestation of the height of aesthetic values expressed through physical and spiritual treatment by the Malay people through their artisans. Thus, the Keris and Tepak Sirih series are also produced as a process of appreciating both the subtleties as well as clear manifestations of traditional Malay art and heritage. This exhibition also brings together a total of 40 pieces of art including paintings and sketches from the series Rice Wrap (Malay Fast Cuisine Series).

Omar Din hopes that this exhibition will place the continuity of tradition in the Malay arts as a clear artistic identity of the nation, as well as to reflect on the beauty and height of Seni Budaya Melayu or Malay Cultural Artistry as part of Malaysia’s indigenous traditions and customs through popular art.

12THINGS
TO KNOW ABOUT
TONGA
TEXT AND IMAGES BY : DEZ CUTCHEY
So, after zero thought and planning, other than 30 seconds of searching google images and 99% of the consideration being price-related (the lady on the check-in desk encouraged me to try Vanuatu, which had just been ravaged by Cyclone Pam), I was off to Tongatapu – the main island of the Kingdom. So what is there to know about visiting Tonga? Here are my top 12 nuggets of knowledge...
Sitting pretty in the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies the Kingdom of Tonga. Nicknamed ‘The Friendly Islands’ by Captain James Cook, who, as the story goes, mistook the desire to kill him for hospitality,
its population of just over 100,000 inhabit only 52 of the 177 islands that make up the country. Tonga was also there for me in my time of need, as the cheapest viable exit-flight escape from New Zealand to meet their visa requirements, which I had somehow missed.
The reason for the above geography/ history lesson is simple – I knew little to nothing about the country before my panic-booking and suspect there are a fair few people on the same wavelength (at least 25% of my friends thought I was heading to Africa when I told them of my travel plans). With only 45,000 tourists visiting per year, it’s easy to see why the country remains a little-known gem in the middle of the ocean.

1Tonga is the stereotype of Paradise
I thought I’d get the most obvious one out of the way first, just so we’re clear. When you think of Paradise, you probably see stunning beaches, palm trees and people drinking out of coconuts, right? Tonga hits the nail on the head, you won’t be short of a beautiful beach to lie on and there are coconuts literally everywhere. Tropical climates, warm seas, it has
it all.
[email protected]
Climbing the tree to get us fresh coconuts
2Its islands are grouped
With so many islands, Tonga has had to group them. Tongatapu, the largest and home to capital city Nuku’alofa, gets a group to itself as 70% of the population live there. In the centre of the Kingdom lies the Ha’apai Group, whose coral reefs are great for diving and fishing. The sailing hub of the Vava’u Group lies at the very north of the territory.
3Everyone runs on Tonga Time
After several months of backpacking, Tonga Time was a welcome change of pace. I figured if you add half an hour to everything, it’s about right. Tonga is about chilling out, no worries, relaxing. Nobody rushes around, everyone has time for a chat. Once you’re accustomed and realise that 12 o’clock = 12:30, you’ll love it too.
4Tongans are ridiculously friendly
Unless everyone was planning
on killing me, I firmly believe
that Tongans are (in general) the friendliest people I have come across. Every second person will stop for a quick conversation and make sure you’re alright, and not because they want something (so often a conversation is followed by a request!) I felt completely safe and extremely welcome everywhere I went.

5Do as much, or as little, as you want
From watersports and diving, to historic sites and pure nature, there’s so much you can do in Tonga to keep you occupied. Or, you can do nothing. I used my time in Tonga to laze around on pristine beaches drinking/ eating coconuts. I felt I deserved a break from backpacker life, and had blown so much $$$ on the flights. Maxing relaxing it ain’t too taxing!
6You’ll eat like a beast Tongans have a cultural love of
food, so you definitely won’t go hungry. Eating out is cheap, quick and delicious. There’s been a heavy influx of western style, high-fat, fried cuisine (I’m looking at you Tongan BBQ, Spam and homemade KFC) but there’s plenty of traditional, healthier dishes available too.
7You MUST check out a show
The best thing I did in Tonga was going to the culture show at
Oholei Beach. It starts with a traditional feast – my mouth is watering reminiscing – followed by
a traditional performance (in a cave) of dances from all over the Kingdom, including full costumes and fire. A guy played the Ukulele with his teeth and I was given the lei (flower garland) of the chief. So awesome.

8Speak Tongan, you’ll be loved
Even just slipping a few words of Tongan into conversation is greatly appreciated by locals, who’ll be amazed at impressed at a foreigner sampling their language (especially if you’re as obviously a non-Tongan like I am). Useful phrases include: “Malo e lelei” (hello), “Faka molemole” (please), “Malo aupito” (thank you very much) and “Nofo a” (Goodbye).
9Everywhere shuts own on Sundays
Thanks to Christian missionaries, Tonga is super-religious. That means they observe the Sabbath day, so Sunday is a shut down. Fortunately, tourism activities are exempt, meaning you’ll find something to do. I went over to near-by Pangaimotu Island, and, for a change, lay on a beach. Bliss. Boats run regularly and it costs only a few dollars to enter the resort.
10Tongan Pa'anga is hard to come
across
Tonga’s currency, the Tongan Pa'anga, is sparsely available outside of the country. I spent ages trying to get hold of some in Auckland and, even then, was only able to get half the amount I needed. There’s a currency exchange place at the airport though and there are ATMs in the state’s capital, Nuku'alofa.
11Fua'amotu International
Airport is lacking
Due to the lack of tourism, Tonga’s international airport is poor. There are minimal check-in desks that cause huge queues (good job people run
on Tonga Time), no air conditioning despite the heat and only basic facilities if you needed to get anything (except for a small cafe, currency exchange booth and toilets). The flight schedule was a wooden board.
12They have Dengue Fever
outbreaks
The dreaded Dengue Fever exists in many parts of the world, including the South Pacific. Not so long before I went to Tonga, an ‘outbreak’ was declared. Unfortunately, I taste delicious. This means that as vigilant as I tried to be, Tongan mozzies couldn’t get enough of my blood and one of the little suckers happened to be a carrier. Take DEET, lots and lots of DEET!
So as my time in Tonga drew to a close, I spent my last day between my toilet and bed – I’ll tell you all about it in graphic detail in the next blog. Despite feeling as though I was actually dying, Tonga was an amazing trip. Would I have gone there if it hadn’t been for my immigration mess up? No. But I’m glad I did; it has a great culture to experience and is as beautiful as you’d imagine. Thank you for your time, Tonga – but not the Dengue!

Egypt has long been a popular holiday destination and for good reason. It is steeped in ancient history, enjoys glorious sunshine at least eleven months of the year and is no more than a few hours’ plane journey from almost anywhere in Western Europe.
The ancient Egyptian civilisations thrived throughout their entire lives on and by the River Nile, in a land where it rarely rains the yearly floods were the people’s salvation, as they planted crops in the arid ground near the riverbanks and depended on the flooding to water these lands for a healthy harvest.
CRUISING THROUGH
EGYPT
TEXT AND IMAGES BY: JOHNNY WARD

As such, almost all of the ancient temples are situated on or near the riverbanks.
The Nile and the Red Sea offer some of the most amazing sights in the world, both ancient and new. The temples at Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and, of course, the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza all attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year – and each site is either on or near a cruise dock, at least a river dock that is.
Disembark at Port Safaga to travel to the Valley of the Kings, the ancient Egyptian burial ground which boasts the tombs of Tutankhamun and Ramses VI alongside hundreds of others.
Sharm-el-Sheik has some of the most spectacular snorkelling experiences the world has to offer, with stunning coral reefs and myriad varieties of colourful tropical fish, sea turtles and even sharks.
Be sure to only venture out on organised diving trips, however, as there have been incidences of attacks
by Oceanic Whitetip sharks in certain areas, so it is necessary to only dive with an experienced guide. If you prefer to head slightly off the beaten track there are also wonderful diving opportunities in and around Hurghada.
The cruise ships themselves are everything you would expect from a floating luxury hotel. Most have a pool, on-deck bar area and restaurants and there are health spas and sporting facilities to be enjoyed.
Evening entertainment comes in the form of live music, west-end style live shows, on board cinemas, lounge bars and casinos, alongside plenty of drinking areas and a choice of casual or formal dining options.
The ships themselves have so much to offer that you may find that you have to tear yourself away just to visit some of the Egyptian landmarks.
Johnny blogs at http://onestep4ward.com – read more about his journey’s there.
