THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

INTRODUCTION

What if......? What if the four animals of the well known fairy tale "The Town
Musicians of Bremen" decided to go on a European countries tour and discover
"European Cultural Heritages ?"

So we sent them to the South of Europe Italy "Perugia", to the Middle of Europe
-Hungary's "Szeghalom" city and then northwards to Poland "Radziejow" and
finally to Turkey's heart "İstanbul" in the Eastern part of Europe. We let them meet
cultural heritages of these countries, discover the precious historical structures
which arent known and remain behind of the city, learn about the young people's
unconscious attitudes to those heritages, their irresponsibility and insensitivity.

This book is the result of an international cooperation. It was written and
illustrated by students- the youngest ones 14 years old. 18 years the oldest - from
the schools :

 “Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Alessandro Volta”- Perugia, Italy
 “Peter Andras Gimnazium es Szigeti Endre Szakkepzo Iskola” - Szeghalom,

Hungary
 “Zespol Szkol Rolnicze Centrum Ksztalcenia Ustawicznego” - Radziejow,

Poland
 “Sultanahmet Suphi Paşa Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi” - İstanbul,

Turkey

It was produced during a project whose title "ECHEP - European Cultural
Heritage from a Pinhole " and which is part of the Education and Culture DG
Lifelong Learning Programme Comenius.

During their two year cooperation, the partners focused on European cultural
heritage studies, comparison of modern digital photo techniques with pinhole
technique and reflections of the culture on social sciences. Here the students both

searched the historical and cultural heritage in school environment and also the
ones remained behind of the city, so saw how responsible they are at the protection
level in their region and also in Europe as a whole. It was also focused on creating
sensitivity and awareness on the participants by performing photography art
without any plundering but protecting. Moreover, the students developed a
comprehensive understanding about how important, effective and relevant a
culture of a Nation is in manlife.

Some of the resuls of our work found their way into this piece of ceative writing.

The first draft of our common story was made during a workshop in April 2015
in İstanbul / Turkey. During the following months, they wrote their texts and
exchanged them through our project platform. The results were discussed and the
references among single chapters were refined so that all chapters formed a
coherent story.

And now, at the end we are holding this product of our cooperation in our hands
and are happy to present it.

Enjoy, dear reader, our book - as we have enjoyed our cooperation !

I. The European Tour Starts in Perugia

The Bremen musicians started their trip on a warm day of June:
“Today’s a perfect day for taking Pinhole photos! Let’s go to the lake and take
beautiful shots” said the dog.

“Please! Everybody is going to the lake today and that’s not very original.. let’s find
a place that’s not so popular with tourists!” replied the donkey.

They kept silent for a moment, thinking….then the cock yelled:

“Yes,! The Planetarium, for example! Only few people in Perugia knows about it”
“ And what about our train station? It is so ugly that maybe a Pinhole shot can make
it attracting!” suggested the cat.

But everybody said : “ NOOOOOO !”
Then the dog said :” Wait! You’re pretty crazy but you may be right. Let’s start from
Planetarium and then go to the station…”

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 4

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

So The group took their shots, but in the end they weren’t so satisfied..
The donkey said: “ Listen, Saint Peter’s church is not so far from here and that is
really beautiful”.

“Good idea. But Saint Peter’s church is very close to the centre. We could walk there
and find some other places of interest” said the cock.

“ I think it is enough for today! Let’s go to Saint Peter’s and then start again
tomorrow. We have 15 boxes ready and 3 places to go..” the cat suggested, and
everybody said: “OK!”.

The group met again the day after to have a second try with Pinhole. They had to
decide where to go…

“You know, yesterday I was sitting on a bench in the Carducci garden and I saw the
beautiful landscape of Perugia… so many towers!” said the dog.
“Towers? What do you mean?” relied the donkey. “ yes, towers. In Perugia there
are a lot” the dog insisted.

The cock explained :” Perugia had more than 70 towers in the past. Most of them
have disappeared but there are some very beautiful, hidden in the alleys of the
town, they call them Tower-houses, because people live in them.”

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 5

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

“ yes, I know someone who lives in a circular tower, his house is so nice” confirmed
the cat.
“ I have an idea. What do you think about looking for tower- houses like that?”
suggested the dog.
The cock said: “ Don’t forget that the Sciri tower is the only original one so we must
start from there”

“ Ok,” said the cock “ so we have plenty of things to do and places to see. Have we
got our cameras ready?”

The cat said : “yes, we made it yesterday in the darkroom, while you were sleeping..
as usual” and the blatant cock replied “ you did your job so well…you know” .

The donkey pointed at him and declared : “ you are lazy!”

The dog said: “ Come on! It is time to go…. I feel lucky today.. my shots will be
perfect”

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 6

The other said “ O yes, sure”
The musicians got 6 beautiful shots of the places they wanted to show:
The Planetarium, the station platform, Saint Peter’s church and the cloister, The
Donati tower and the Sciri tower.
They did a very good job.

II. The Musicians Visit Szeghalom in Hungary

The next stop of the Bremen musicians was Hungary. They arrived in Budapest
in May 2014. They had a quick sightseeing tour in the capital of Hungary. They
marveled at the Chain Bridge, the Parliament, the Castle of Buda and the
Matthias Church.

-In my opinion Budapest is a really nice city- said the donkey.

-Yes, I absolutely agree with you, my friend. And what’s more, all the historical
buildings are preserved and treated in a proper way – added the dog.

-Now we have seen the capital, so I think it’s time to go to Szeghalom where
the András Péter Secondary School can be found – suggested the cat.

Everybody agreed and had a last look at the wonderful building of the
parliament.

Then they altogether set off on their journey to the town of Szeghalom.

- I have an idea! – shouted the rooster – In Budapest we saw all the most
famous places, which are really beautiful and attract a lot of tourists. But…I am
getting bored with them. You can easily find loads of photos on the internet.
This time I want to see hidden treasures. I would like to visit those places which
are not so famous, you can’t find them in tourist brochures.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 8

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

- What a great idea! – said the dog excitedly – I hope the students of the school
can help us to find these places in Szeghalom or nearby.

Arriving at the school the Bremen Musicians’ first thing was to tell the children
their idea.

- Dear musicians, we are glad to help you! – said one of the students – And to
tell you the truth, you are very lucky that you have come in May. Because this
is the time of the mayfly bloom.

- I have never heard of it. Could you tell me more about it? – asked the cat.

The students told everything what you must know about it. Every year from
late spring to early summer millions of long-tailed mayflies rise in huge clouds
from the river, fly on the surface of the water, mate and die, all in just a few
hours. This unique event which lasts for three or four days, is amongst the most
fascinating natural phenomena in European rivers.

- Sounds interesting! If I have the possibility, I want to see it! What else is worth
visiting here? – enquired the donkey.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 9

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

- My classmates and me often meet in a special place after school. It is behind
the bus stop, so we usually spend our time there while waiting for the bus –
answered the student.

Immediately they went there and had a look at it.

-Oh my God! What a shabby place! But I see once it used to be a wonderful
building – said the dog with some disappointment in his voice.

- Yes, you are right. About 15 years ago it used to be a student hostel.
Unfortunately, it lost its function as the number of students decreased. It was
closed. And since that time its condition has got worse and worse – explained
the student.

- I am really sorry about it. It shouldn’t be this way. This building should be
renovated and shown to tourists – said the cat.

- I go along with you – agreed the student – And we have already tried to make
things better. We made a plan how the town council could renovate it, and give
new function to it. One afternoon we gathered together with my mates to do
some gardening and repair the benches in the yard. We also had a meeting with
the mayor of the town. Unfortunately, the town council doesn’t have enough
money for the preservation. The mayor said he would apply for European
Union projects to bring the building back to life.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 10

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

The Bremen Musicians liked the idea and showed respect to the students for
their effort.

Their next stop leaded them to the former railway line.

- How about its history? – asked the rooster.

- In the past it connected small towns in this region – the student started to tell
the story - But after the revolution of cars and buses it became unimportant
and the municipality decided to destroy it. But some parts of the railway still
stayed on the ground. Not long ago it was renovated and set a monument to
remember modern inhabitants how important role it played in the past.

- I especially enjoyed watching the mayflies – said the rooster happily.

- If you are interested in nature, I can suggest you other specialities. – advised
the student.

- Why not! I am keen on nature. It relaxes me.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 11

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

- Ok. Come with me along river Berettyó and Körös. Here you can find some of
the most colourful birds of Europe, like kingfisher and hoopoe. The so called
’gyurgyalag’, for example has its nest in the walls of the river.

- Fantastic! Let’s go and discover it!

- If you still have some energy, we can walk there – added the student – There
is a path, called ’Kék túra útvonal’. This route guides tourists along the rivers
in the nature. You can move, relax and enjoy the clean air, At the same time you
can see beautiful species of animals and plants.

- Alright! I still want to go on, so let’s go! – shouted the cat.

All the musicians and students enjoyed their trip. At the end of the day they
were exhausted but everything was worth because they could discover the
hidden treasures of Szeghalom.

III. The Musicians Visit Radziejow in Poland

The Bremen Musicians donkey, cat dog and rooster landed in Warsaw 20th
October. They were interested in what does the polish capital city look like.

The donkey said: Let's visit Złote Tarasy Shopping Mall.
The cat replied: I'dt rather see Pałac Kultury i Nauki/ Zamek Krolewski, I've
heard it's worth seeing.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 13

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

The donkey: OK le it be, but later on we will rush to Przemystka, you know that
school near Radziejow, where everybody is waiting for us.

The rooster put in his word: Absobloominglutely!
Gentlemen! The dog addressed his companions- I would strongly advise
spending the whole day in Warsaw in order to see Royal Castle and Wilanow,
magnificent places, so I heard.

Oh stop you all-cried the donkey- To my mind let's call Joseph to make sure we
choose the right place.

Certainly! Cried the rooster.

The cat interfered: What's the point! He has already told us to arrive at the
Fryderyk Chopin's airport and leave the rest in his hands.

He has also mentioned the places like Torun, Kruszwica and Biskupin that, to
be honest, I have never heard of before, but I really can't wait to see. The rooster
interfered: Oh look there's Joseph coming, long time no see friend...

The Bremen Musicians, together with Polish team, had a wonderful time in
Poland and brought some nice pinholes home.

IV. The Seagull Welcomes The Musicians at Istanbul

It was the first hours of the morning. The sun was shining and the cool water
of Bosphorus was sparkling glamorously. Ezan voice and screams of seagulls
were melting in the morning.

The gulls started chasing the public ferries sailing from Asian side to European
side and the students, workers or young lovers were waiting for disembarking
and on the way, ferries salute each other with their horn while Bosphorus
Ferry starts its journey to the legendry shores of the Bosphorus where is
adorned with old wooden historical houses or with historical palaces.

Train from Radziejow to Istanbul had just arrived at the terminal of Sirkeci and
it was cooling its rails. There inside the train were the four Bremen Musicians
who had a long journey starting from Italy. Being so exhausted they were fast
asleep and didn’t notice that they arrived in Istanbul.

Suddenly, the snow-white seagull who was perching on the wires of the train
across them starred at them and soared gently to their wagon.

-“Rat! tat! tat! tat!” the seagull pecked on their window continuously without
missing a beat to wake them up.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 15

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

-“What is that noise! Stop it! Leave me alone. I am so sleepy.” said jackass
without knowing that they were already in Istanbul. Dobby woke up at that
moment and came face to face with the seagull who was looking at them out of
the window.

-“Hey what is that? My god!” The seagull opened his wings and greeted them
saying: -“Hello! Welcome to Istanbul.”

The mysterious seagull flew away and disappeared in the blue skies of
Istanbul. With the astonishment they had, they wondered where the seagull
had gone.

-“How genial and kind he was. He was acting as if he had been our friends for
years. We should find and thank him. If we hadn’t been woken up by him we
would spend the whole day sleeping here.

Come on guys let’s go!” said Chris with an hectic voice. The four fellows set off
to explore Istanbul and suddenly find themselves in front of a spellbinding
view of Bosphorus.

-“Woooww what a glamorous city!” exclaimed Jack. The four fellows decided
to take a ferry to explore the city.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 16

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

-“Let’s have a seat on the roof and taste the soul of Istanbul.” said Kitty.

“Look ! How magnificient structures are over there! They stand in a glorious
way ” said the Jackass.

“ I want to see them closely and take their photos!” shouted Dobby and went
on: “ But I will take their pinhole photos also. Because I think they will be seen
in pinhole so special and attractive.”

While taking pinhole photographs, we can have a chance to examine them
more” added Chris. The mysterious seagull suddenly came:

-“Hello again! Are you enjoying Istanbul?”

-“Hey! Where have you been? We were looking for you since morning. Thank
you very much for waking us up in the morning. We are so glad.” said Chris.

-“Where are you coming from and what are you doing here?” asked the seagull
curiously.

-“We have been traveling for a long time to explore the European Cultural
Heritages and here is our last stop. We are collecting information about the
cultures and cultural heritages .” answered Jack.

-“How nice! Let me be your guide.” offered the seagull and went on:

-“The circle bread you were talking about is called “Simit” in Turkish. It is one of
the indispensable tastes of Turkish breakfast and five teas.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 17

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

It is not possible to consider it without cheese and tea. And we love Turkish
people as they don’t deprive us of this good taste.

“While tasting Simit with the accompany of white cheese and tea four fellows
asked the Seagull;

-“Can you tell us about Istanbul?”

-“Of course! With pleasure! Istanbul is the only city in the world located on two
continents, Asia and Europe. It isn’t that the geographical fact that draws the
significance. It is a city where old and new, historical and modern, cultural and
revolutional coexists. It is a city fought over for thousands of years and it has
been the capital of many civilizations.

It was the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) and named
Constantinopolis and finally, when the Ottomans captured Byzantium in the
year 1453 by the Conquerer Sultan Mehmet, Istanbul was converted into the
capital of the Ottoman Empire. It is the home of cultural heritage , among the
richest in the world.”

-"It makes the city very special! No doubt.” said Kitty.

-“Many historical works of art showing traces of these empires, have been able
to survive up to date.” added the seagull and continued:

-“The most important historical remain belonging to Byzantium is Hagia
Sophia museum which was used as a temple contains very valuable mosaics.”

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 18

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

-“Wooooww we should take photos all of them!! Hey!! look at the tower!”
exlaimed Chris!

-“It is Galata Tower!” said the seagull.

-“Is that the one Hazerfen Ahmet Çelebi who was a scientist jumped down the
tower and flew to the opposite side of the Bosphorus strait by using the wings
which he had invented in the 17th century.” asked the Kitty. The seagull
nodded:

-“Yes, definitely it is. And also it is visible everywhere in the city and one of the
oldest towers in the world. The tower is at the hill which over looks both to
the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn and the sea of Marmara.

”They got off the ferry and went on their journey and they were exteremely
impressed by magnificent Topkapı Palace, Dolmabahce Palace where the
Ottoman Sultans started to live in, Blue Mosque and by the great works of
architect Sinan such as Suleymaniye Mosque. After taking photos of them,

-“Let’s go to Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar for shopping.” said Jack.

After, the next day they woke up and headed for new places in İstanbul. The
seagull was waiting for them.

-“Hello friends; today I will show you some precious, historical structures
remain behind of the city” said the seagull.

The four fellows spent the day visiting cultural heritages and taking their
digital-pinhole photos in the backyards of the city.

http://www.echepinhole.altervista.org Page 19

THE BREMEN MUSICIANS AT DISCOVERY OF EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

The next day they woke up with the rise of the sun in Sultanahmet and they
were so excited as they were going to welcome the Comenius group coming
from Italy, Hungary and Poland.

The four Bremen musicians got ready to give a small concert for the guests. As
they already knew the city well, they became the guides for the Comenius
group and they turned back to their country with lots of good memories.

On their way back home they were talking about how right Napoleon was with
his quotation “If the earth were a single state Istanbul would be the capital..
