ALGARVE DANCE OPEN 2018

Where?
Algarve Dance Open is a revolutionary competition being held at
Jury the Centro de Congressos do Arade, Lagoa, Portugal to provide the
Event ‘17 next generation of dancers an opportunity to share, learn and
‘18 Forecast explore their talents.
Partners The aim is to push the talented, encourage diversity and exchange of
ideas, inspire the young and help the evolution of all genres of dance.
This competition is open to dancers from 4 to 25 year's old enrolled
in National & Foreign Dance Schools or entering independently.

Where?
Centro de Congressos do Arade, an architectural project, covering a total
Jury area of 9000m2, divided into two blocks and equipped with latest high
Event ‘17 technology, essential for staging major events on an international scale.
‘18 Forecast Standing out from the modern appearance of the exterior, which is divided
Partners between transparent glass panes and opaque concrete structure, is an
imposing chimney, a remnant of the old factory.

The auditorium, a room of approximately 2000m2 has the capacity to
hold a thousand people. In addition, the pavilion has three foyer
areas – essential for house management support at events – three
catering rooms and an exhibition room is a congress centre located in
Parchal, Lagoa. It is 65km (45mins) from Faro airport, and is 5min
walk from Ferragudo train station, allowing easy access. Nearby towns
are Lagoa, Ferragudo and Portimão.

In the past, the congress centre has hosted events such as Dance World
Cup Finals 2014, BPM Festival, Wine exhibitions and many more.

Jury Casey Herd

What? The American dancer Casey Herd began his training at The School for Ballet West (Salt Lake City,
Where? Utah) and later at Ballet West Conservatory where his talent was quickly recognized by the teacher
and company founder William Christensen. As a result of his training with Mr. Christensen, Casey
Jury was given the opportunity to audition for the company, and at age 16 he was offered an
Event ‘17 apprenticeship. He continued his training at The Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C.
‘18 Forecast studying with renowned teacher Andre Garbuz from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg,
Partners Russia. He was offered scholarships to schools around the United States including Balanchine’s
School of American Ballet in New York City, and began his professional career with one of the
world’s leading companies, American Ballet Theater. An opportunity was offered to Mr. Herd to join
Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle where he was introduced to more innovative choreography, and
quickly rose to the rank of principal dancer. While in Seattle Mr. Herd’s repertoire expanded
dramatically to include leading roles in works by some of the great choreographers such as George
Balanchine, William Forsythe, Jerome Robbins, and many more. Having previously been a guest
artist with Dutch National Ballet, he was invited in 2008 to join the company as a principal. In 2011,
Dance Europe placed Mr. Herd nineteenth in their top 100 international dancers who have made
outstanding achievements. In 2012 he received The Alexandra Radius Award. Mr. Herd was twice
invited as a principal guest artist with San Francisco Ballet, and has been invited to perform leading
roles at companies such as English National Ballet, and Lithuanian National Ballet, and was invited
to go back and guest with Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle.

Daniel Cardoso Solange Urdang

Daniel Cardoso graduated from the National Conservatory of Lisbon, where he received multi- Solange became CEO of Urdang in 2001.

returning to Portugal in the summer of 2005, Daniel founded the award winning repertory company
Quorum Ballet, where he is the artistic director and resident choreographer. His experience as a
choreographer includes over 35 works for the Quorum Ballet and works across, Europe and Russia.
His work has been highly acclaimed by the international press. Desde 2007 is a guest teacher and
choreographer for the Vaganova Academy (Kirov Ballet School) in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
“Encounters”, the piece created, was premiered at the Marinsky Theater in June 2008. Daniel’s
teaching experience spreads across USA, Brasil, Russia, China, Denmark and Portugal.
