1 Princess Anne Living | March/April 2018

Message from the President

Spring is finally upon us! We are anxiously awaiting the “greening” up of the golf course, the return of outdoor tennis
and our pool opening for the summer. We are excited to announce several new offerings that will launch this spring.
Through the dedicated efforts of Kristen Bunting, Jenn Garrott and our Team, we will unveil a beautifully re-designed,
user-friendly website and mobile app that will allow you to make golf, tennis, fitness and dining reservations, pay your
bill online with electronic transfer or with a credit card, set spending limits on children’s membership numbers and
view all upcoming Club events. Check out pages 5-6 for details. These new features will go “live” April 1. Look for
more information on how to login and access this new technology beginning in mid-March.

The Princess Anne is also pleased to introduce a new and improved security system to better serve and protect our
PACC families. Each family member will receive a unique, individual member number and photos of each member will be
requested for your family’s account. We are also upgrading the door access systems to require a membership card or membership
bracelet to check into the Pool or enter our Clubhouse or Fitness Center after hours. Additional camera surveillance has been
installed over the past year and we will continue to monitor the status of equipment needs.

The Club’s Master Planning Committee continues to meet with Chapman Coyle Chapman, Image Design, Siska-Aurand and
other design professionals to develop a phased master plan to enhance the dining and recreational amenities of the Princess Anne.
Your Committee and Board will unveil its vision and recommendations in the months ahead.

It is truly an exciting time in the life of the Princess Anne and all members of the Princess Anne Team continue to strive for
delivery of a unique experience whenever you come for a visit. I hope to see you often in the (hopefully warm) months ahead!

All the best,

Jonathan L. Thornton

Up-to-Date from the General Manager

As I draft this column on a blustery cold day in late January we very much look forward to warmer days ahead
and the exciting events highlighted inside this spring issue. Our Committees and Team continue to tweak programs
and have made every effort to list not only March and April events in this issue, but also as many summer programs
as possible. It is our hope that this preview information affords you time now to plan ahead and synchronize your
family’s calendar. Please rest assured that the freshest information will be just a tap away on your new Princess Anne
mobile app that arrives in April.

Our second annual “Youth Expo” will take place on Thursday, March 15th. Please check page 17 for details as this
is a perfect opportunity to meet with our aquatics, fitness, golf, tennis and youth professionals to learn more about
summer programs. We're very pleased to add a new camp with Ms. Helen, specially designed for our 3 year olds.

We are very pleased to host this year’s Club Mixer (formerly known as the Quad or Quintessential) with our friends from Bayville,
Broad Bay,Cavalier and Norfolk Yacht on Saturday,April 14th.This “Once Upon a Time”party will transform each room inside
the clubhouse into a fairy tale theme and feature three different bands. Please make plans today to join us! As always, as you have
thoughts about any aspect of your Club please do not hesitate to contact me via phone on my direct line (757) 440-3100 or e-mail
[email protected].

See you at the Princess Anne!

PACC Team Highlights

PACC Takes the Plunge!

On Saturday, February 3rd, for the second year straight, a brave
group of our PACC Team members and friends jumped into the
freezing Atlantic to support the Special Olympics of Virginia! The
‘PACC Plungers’ not only helped by raising $5,250 of the festival’s
total $1.2 million dollars, but they boldly ran into the ocean in
show of their support on a balmy 36o winter day.

The plunge is much more than just an icy dip in the water. Before
Special Olympics of Virginia provides year-round sports training, After
competition, leadership opportunities and health services to more
than 27,000 athletes of all abilities. They are helping to make the
world a better, healthier and more joyful place - one athlete, one
volunteer, one family member, one plunger at a time.

Congratulations to our PACC Team for their fundraising efforts
and bravery in support of this wonderful cause!

A movable obstruction is anything artificial which can be moved without

between this rule and the rule covering loose impediments.
1. First, a movable obstruction can be moved anywhere on the golf course

Long Leaf Pine Program Surges

The Princess Anne Country Club embarked on a long leaf
pine restoration program in 2014. The City of Virginia Beach
approached us to be the pilot location for a program that
will hopefully bring the once stunning long leaf pine back to
the Tidewater area. The long leaf pine was once the dominate
species of tree in this area and, due to logging for ship masts
and human progress, was all but erased from this region. The
specimens you see around the course are mostly the lob lolly
pine which produce a shorter, less stout needle.

This past fall, one of Princess Anne’s own, Mr. George Darden
approached us about planting more lob lolly pines on the golf
course. As some may know, Mr. Darden is very passionate
about lob lolly pines and donated over 100 saplings to the golf
course. We planted all the trees around the course bringing
our total to over 150 long leaf pines on the Princess Anne
property. Although small now, these trees, with their long
needles and large pine cones, will grow up to be majestic
pillars of the golf course and the community.

If you see Mr. Darden, please thank him for not only the
trees, but also the passion he exudes to restore this majestic
specimen!

Ages 6-14 / $350 per semester
Our Junior Golf Academy utilizes the Operation 36 platform developed by iGrow Golf,
which consists of three aspects: education, practice and performance. Through weekly
classes, supervised practices and match play, young golfers advance through six program
levels, each with 12 “subjects” to master. A badge is earned for mastery of each subject.
Once all 12 badges have been earned, the golfer can move up to the next level. The
ultimate goal for each golfer is to play nine holes from their designated tee, shooting a
score of 36. The program is app based so students (and parents) can track their progress,
making it fun and competitive. On Saturdays, when matches are played, we conduct
ESPN-style interviews with match winners and post them to our Facebook and
Instagram accounts. This is fun for our golfers and enhances their public speaking skills.

Tennis Talk

Spring is right around the corner and it’s almost time for the bubble to come down! The bubble is scheduled to be taken
down on April 12, but it all depends on the weather. We will keep everyone informed with any changes along the way.

Ladies Spring Lunch League will start soon. The schedule has not been released yet, but it will start mid-April.The “B”
Team (3.0-3.5 players) will play at 9:30 am on Wednesdays and the “A” Team (4.0-4.5 players) will play on Fridays at 9:30
am. All ladies are encouraged to stay for lunch after the matches.

The first of our Cup events will start in April! Virginia Cup is set for Saturday, April 28th at Westwood Country
Club. The very next day is the Fun Cup at Norfolk Yacht & Country Club. For the rest of our Cup events and other
tournaments, make sure to check out our 2018 calendar of events on page 32!

Many of you remember a few years ago we attempted to embrace an online court reservation system, much like our
current system used for reserving golf tee times. Unfortunately the system wasn’t capable of handling the dynamic
nature of our court reservations, which poses a unique challenge even when done manually much less electronically. Our
reservation system has to take into account member play that often has to be moved around to create more timeslots,
constantly changing schedules of six teaching pros and the multiple programs we offer each day.The good news is, we
have found an online solution that can keep up with our demands and are excited to implement it. We go live on April 1
so we have time to iron out any kinks. We are very excited at the prospect of having a user-friendly online system that will
make reserving a court a much simpler and more convenient process for you!

John’s Tip of the Month

Use wrist action for more power on your swings

You’ve heard of snapping your
wrist on serves and overheads. Now we’re talking about doing
it on your ground strokes. There are several contributors to

power on a forehand because
it’s a kinetic chain that starts from
the ground up.The legs, then hips,
core, shoulders, arm and, finally, the wrist
go into hitting the ball with full power, but the
wrist is by far the greatest contributor because it
accelerates the racquet head. That’s why you’ll see
many of today’s top players taking their racquet
back with their elbow leading and the racquet
head almost dragging until the last minute
where the racquet head starts to accelerate
forward. This creates a flex in the wrist
right before snapping into the ball.

Pro Shop News

If you’ve been in the tennis shop lately, you've noticed the many changes, namely we have downsized slightly to add more storage
space. No longer will we be using the room to the right when you walk in, that we previously used to display men’s apparel as
well as sale items. We closed it off with walling and a door to keep our overstock and shoe storage out of sight. We fit all of the
display merchandise from that area into the main pro shop to create a win-win. Also, to keep up with the stringing demand, we
have bought another state-of-the-art Wilson Balliardo stringing machine. This is the same equipment used at the Grand Slam
events, which will be placed in the new storage area, out of sight. We hope you’ll also notice that we are offering much more
merchandise embroidered with the Princess Anne logo, which will be a new direction for us for in 2018.

Holiday Tennis Camp

We had a successful Holiday Tennis Camp with more than 160 kids over the three
days. Everyone had a great time and the older kids enjoying laser tag on the third day!

Pickle Ball Social

We had a great turnout for our
Pickle Ball Social in January!
There were quite a few of our
regular pickle ballers plus a lot
of members trying it for the first
time. Thank you for making it such a fun evening. Make sure to keep on playing! We have our pickle ball hit-around sessions
on Mondays at 12:30 pm and Thursdays at 7:30 pm. You may call the Tennis Shop for a lesson or to reserve a court up to
three days in advance (just make sure to let us know it’s for pickle ball). Hope to see you out on the courts!

Fitness Success Story | Megan

What prompted you to begin working with Sabine?
I needed help getting ready for an upcoming ski trip. I also needed to regain
strength after having my son and taking an unnecessarily long sabbatical from
working out.

How would you describe the workouts!
Sabine coaches me through a balanced, full-body workout using different
equipment. She introduced me to TABATA (a fun way to challenge myself )
and different ways to use the BOSU, free weights and TRX!

Do you do other workouts/activities when not with your trainer?
I play tennis and you may spot me getting dragged around by my two labs and baby in
the neighborhood.

Are there any obstacles you had to overcome with regard to eating or
exercising?

My obstacle was myself, finding any excuse to not go to the gym. Sabine holds

me accountable and now I’m in a routine!

What physical results have you seen?
I’m SO much stronger in my daily activities.

Have you noticed changes in other areas of your life as a result FAST FIVE
of your training program?
I’m generally a healthy eater, but I love learning new clean-eating ideas from MEGAN | FAST 5
Sabine. She’s got some good tricks up her sleeve.

as healthy and strong as I do. Without having worked with a trainer, I would
still be riding the elliptical to nowhere. 4. FAVE QUOTE:
Sabine's saying, "Squeeze
What advice would you give someone considering workout your butt because if you don't
