Dennis the owl loved loved to whoo! 2
His confidence was exhilarating.

No matter the weather, rain or shine
His neighbors in Sunnyside Forest didn’t seem to mind.

1

From the mail carrier to the bus driver to the widow 4
who lived next door.

They could always count on Dennis to be reliable
and so much more.

Whether it’s designing his new bowtie or winning
the school spelling bee.

Dennis liked being a helper, a leader,
a good friend, you see.

3

Being a good leader and a friend, Dennis didn’t 6
do it for a cheer.

He knew that helping others would bring enormous
smiles from ear to ear.

Dennis had so many reasons to whoo, whoo, whoo.
Life was good, he was excelling much like his community

knew that he would.

5

Dennis’ talent usually had him center stage. 8

Though there was some who looked on
with an unsettling gaze.

Across the hall some pointed and whispered,
“Who is he to be so confident, so brave?”

Dennis couldn’t comprehend why they never smiled,
said hello, or offered a friendly wave.

Soon Dennis was apprehensive and wasn’t feeling so great.

He no longer wanted to give out hugs or look
for hands to shake.

7

Sunnyside Forest wasn’t feeling so sunny. 10
He was feeling down about himself and that

was not funny.
After a while Dennis lost his enthusiastic whoo.

The whoo that made him special, it’s true.

9

“He’s not cool,” he overheard some say. 12
Dennis hung his head low and walked away.
“Don’t be so mean,” his friend Manny said

coming to his rescue.
“You’ll whoo again one day, I believe in you.”

11

His mom and dad noticed, “What do we do?” 14
“Our little Dennis is looking awfully blue.”

“He’s not playing with his sister and doesn’t
give soccer a second look.”

“Two things he enjoyed,” Mom said. “Was smiling
and a good book.”

13

One night after dinner, Dennis was sulking in his bed. 16
Then a still small voice whispered in his head.
“Words do hurt, this is true.”

“Take the power back from words, when they sting you.”

15

Days, then weeks went by, where had his whoo gone? 18

“Mom...Dad...I think I’ve lost it he said scrolling
through pictures on his phone.”

Manny would have his friend down no longer.

He searched for ways to encourage his friend to be
happier, stronger.

“I can’t hoot like you, but I can sure “er, erer-erer!”

“You’re right,” Manny said. “We’re all designed to do
something no one else can do.”

“So use the gift that was given to you.”

17

Dennis’ frown turned upside down and he said, “By gosh, 20
you’re right.”

“I’ll get my whoo back, I’ll try with all my might.”
“I won’t be afraid of what others think of me.”

“I’m smart, courageous and sometimes quirky, but that’s
what makes me, me.”

“Can’t, impossible and defeat, are not in my vocabulary.”
“Every detail of my life will be used for good,”
Dennis said excitedly.

19

“I’ll use my words to help not hurt and build up, 22
not tear down.”

“With the help of my neighbors, Sunnyside can be the
best neighborhood in town.”

“If I fail, I’ll try, try again.”
“Even if I don’t take home trophies, I know I still win.”

21

“Because I gave it my best and I gave it my all.” 24
Speaking words of affirmation, Dennis stood tall.
His feathers looked shiner, his parents were so proud.

“That’s our boy,” they exclaimed out loud.
“It was never lost,” they said.
“Your incredibly unique whoo.”

“It was and will always be, inside of you!”
