CELEBRATIONS 20-YEAR REUNION CELEBRATION

Special thanks to Olivia Milne Marr ’97 and Misha Marr ’97
for organizing a fun-filled 20-year reunion for the Class of
1997. The fall celebration began on campus with a noontime
family picnic on Chase Fields. Under the cypress trees, a bounce
house, sand volleyball courts, and grassy knolls provided hours
of entertainment for our youngest guests. Alumni reminisced
with their former Headmaster Art Merovick about their time
on campus as well as their college and global adventures. “We
all had a great time catching up. It was very fun to see everyone
and their kids too,” shared Olivia. The festivities continued into
the evening with a cocktail reception graciously hosted by
the Conway family at their exquisite tasting room on Stearns

Despite the 45-year time span since the Class of 1972 gathered
for their graduation, it was as if no time had passed when they
reunited in June 2017 to celebrate their 45th reunion. Spearheaded
by Rob Sloss ’72, alumni gathered on the Braun House terrace
under the oak trees, enjoying small bites and spirited conversations
with classmates. Retired faculty members Yates Satterlee ’66
and Dana White joined the conversations that ignited a flood of
memories. As retold by Rob, “Some of my fondest memories at
Laguna include our backpacking trips in the hills of Santa Barbara
and Yosemite, our teacher and classmate discussions, shop class,
stories from “Big Ed,” and the soccer and baseball games. However,
after 45 years, what I appreciate most about Laguna are the
interesting teachers, wonderful setting, and lifelong friendships.
Having spent second through twelfth grades at Laguna, I grew up
with several classmates and feel indefinitely connected with them.
I always enjoy the reunions as a way to catch up.”

everyone shared stories and memories about their favorite activities and teachers
including Yates Satterlee ’66, Alan Gaines, and Natalie Hansen Harpham—all of
who joined the class for this grand occasion. “We had a wonderful time recalling
memories—Fall Festival, Nero’s birthday, cheering at soccer games, mud football,
lunch table conversations, and serving “High Tea” at graduations and special events
on the Senior Lawn!” says Debbie.

In reflecting upon the experiences of Laguna students now and then, Debbie
shares, “I understand that the class of 2017 was also relatively small in size. Our
class was small in number (only 16), but I feel that we share more than the size
of our class. We also graduated and started college in times of change and turmoil.
I hope that the class of 2017 finds that their time at Laguna has given them the
same academic base and self-confidence we had to meet every challenge faced.”

The 50-year reunion weekend extravaganza continued with more laughter and
stories as everyone enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the home of Rikki Emory ’67.
Before departing, classmates gathered for a farewell brunch at The Vineyard
House in Santa Ynez. “We had a great turnout and spent the whole time catching
up and marveling at all of the amazing and diverse things we all have done in the
last 50 years. We are already planning our next reunion in five years!” adds Debbie.

On behalf of our students, faculty, staff, and extended Laguna EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
family, I am honored to share the 2016-17 Laguna Blanca CHAIR
School Annual Report. In June 2017, I concluded my two-year Mason Farrell ’80
term as Board Chair, and I am both proud and humbled by the VICE CHAIR
work we have accomplished as a community. The strong sense Hani Zeini
of community we share, coupled with our dedicated faculty TREASURER
and strong academic standards, are what set our school apart David Bradley ’99
from others. SECRETARY
Greg Bartholomew
The countless hours that our volunteers give so generously MEMBER-AT-LARGE
to Laguna and the financial generosity of our community that Brent Bickett
supports the work of our faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees do MEMBER-AT-LARGE
not go unnoticed. Dawn Lafitte

The generosity reflected on the following pages is what TRUSTEES
allows Laguna to continue our nearly 85-year tradition of Harry L. Atterbury
educational excellence. Margaret Baker
Kevin Brine
To all members of our community, please accept our deepest Elisabeth Fowler
and heartfelt appreciation for the myriad ways you ensure our Karen Fry
ability to realize Laguna’s mission. Bob Fuladi

THE

LAGUNA

FUND

The Laguna Fund is the philanthropic
foundation of our school. It is an essential
component of Laguna’s financial well-
being and benefits every facet of the
school’s operation, from financial aid and
professional development to technology,
the arts, athletics, and musical programs.
Unrestricted gifts enable the school to
apply financial resources on an annual
basis to the areas of greatest need in the
operating budget. A gift to the Laguna
Fund is the first and most important gift
we ask of our current parents, alumni,
alumni parents, grandparents, faculty and
staff, and friends.

We are truly grateful for your
contributions, and we salute you—our
donors and fundraising volunteers—for
your generosity and participation. Your
gifts to Laguna are an investment in the
joy of learning, self-discovery, and the
vibrancy of our community.

2017 SPRING BENEFIT

¡VIVA LAGUNA!

¡Muchas Gracias! Our never-ending gratitude
to Spring Benefit Chairs, Belle and Bert Regeer,
for envisioning such a festive community
celebration for Laguna Blanca. Along with many
dedicated volunteers, Belle and Bert created a
night of camaraderie, joy, and celebration which
came to life under the festive lights on the patio
at the Bacara Resort and Spa. The vision from
this dynamic duo made it possible to experience
a party-size paella, Flamenco dancers twirling
to greet our guests, and the warm sounds of live
Spanish guitar.

Guests shopped the outdoor silent auction
set up as the El Mercado, featuring unique
merchandise, vacations, and experiences of all
kinds, including golf packages, tango lessons,
and concert tickets. Priceless student art and
unique wine lots were also part of the silent
auction. The newly introduced Wine Wall drew
a lot of attention and friendly competition
among attendees.

Flamenco dancers escorted guests into the
ballroom, which was transformed into an elegant
Feria with dining under the red and white lanterns
of Seville. Attendees were moved by the video
produced by Camila Lemere ’18 who eloquently
shared in her own words the story of who we are
as a school. The true outpouring of generosity
came to life here as our community celebrated
and raised funds to support our students, our
faculty, our facilities, and the programs that make
Laguna so special.

Many thanks to the Laguna volunteers who
dedicated so much time and energy into raising
critical funds that support all areas of our school.
Together, with the following event sponsors and
donors to the special live auction paddle raise, this
night was a fundraising success with net proceeds
of over $500,000 for our school.

A ROOM WITH A [NEW] VIEW OF LEARNING Academic Service Staff: Kim Valentine, Rose Steeber, Al Silva, and Sienna Kimbell
along with Cicciu, Laguna’s therapy dog.
Laguna works hard to destigmatize learning challenges like
ADD, ADHD, and dyslexia by making the Academic Services
Center a central part of the campus environment. The Center
is housed in one of the main campus classrooms, allowing
students to drop by easily whenever needed. The school’s
increased focus on project-based learning provides interaction,
activity, movement, and engagement, rather than traditional
test-taking.

Although Laguna does not modify its curriculum to meet the
needs of students with learning challenges, Center Supervisor
Rose Steeber says it does help children learn to make
choices about their workload, homework, and physical and
emotional health.

“I teach them that sometimes sleep is more important than
finishing the last piece of a take-home assignment,” Steeber
says. “Could it cause their grade to dip? Yes. But it will also help
them stay strong and healthy, with a mind open to learning. I
want them to learn which is more important, a grade or their
well-being. Those hard choices are what life is all about.”

LOWER SCHOOL
LEARNING SUPPORT

While Laguna’s Middle and Upper School students
find learning support at the Academic Services Center,
Lower School students have a program all their own.
Led by Laguna’s Learning Specialist Sandy Segal,
the program supports students in all academic areas,
with a goal of providing early intervention to learning
challenges and fostering strong self-esteem and a love
of learning. Since every Lower School child spends
some time in Segal’s classroom, there is no stigma
attached to visiting—just a genuine sense of support.
A special thank you to Segal, who has provided these
proactive services at the Lower School for more
than 25 years.

GOLF

CLASSIC

Five years ago, while serving as Alumni
Council President, Dave Bradley ’99 created
the Laguna Blanca Ace Angeloff Golf Classic
to enhance alumni connections with the
school. Each year since, Dave has volunteered
to serve as the event chair and has grown the
event to now include an important fundraising
component to support our school's financial aid
program.

In November 2016, 80 golfers—parents,
grandparents, and alumni—gathered at La
Cumbre Country Club for a fun-filled day of
golf and raised nearly $10,000 for Laguna’s
Alumni Scholarship Program. Many thanks
to all the players and sponsors who continue
to give back to the Laguna community and
support our students today.
