the Social Committee is hosting our “Chef’s Table” which Mayor Glenn Troast
will be held in the State Room, but seating is limited. Book
now before this special event is full.

The “Taste of LHP” was postponed in January to March
31st. Book your tickets for this awesome city-sponsored
event. Many of your favorite restaurants will be here for you
to sample their food, beer, wine and hang out with the rest
of the community. This is a great event for our members to
show all the non-members how awesome we are at LHPYC.
Sign up now for our first LHPYC Triathlon coming up April
18th. See Jeremy’s article explaining the details. I am putting
together my team and training hard to be as competitive,
but fun filled, as possible. We will be utilizing our pool deck,
property, and city streets to make this event happen. This
will be sponsored and run by our Fitness and Swim
Committee.

Lastly, I would like to raise awareness about our Mayoral
election on Mach 17th. At LHPYC, we are not getting
political to advocate for any one person, but we are
advocating for getting people involved. We want more
community activism and awareness of what amazing things
go on in your city. We also need attention to the things that
aren’t amazing and need attention and our collective help.
We feel that the more of a platform we give our community
to be openly involved, the better our community is. The role
of our 3 governors is to get involved and share with us their
knowledge of what’s going on outside the club, and also to
help advocate for things that help our club (which
represents 1,500 people and growing). We are small, but
self-contained with our own police force, fire department,
parks and recreation, library, building department and
more. So please, go vote and get involved to keep our city
the best and most unique city in South Florida!

IN OUR COMMUNITY

LHPYC is proud to support a wide array of local charities. There are many wonderful ways to get
involved this month no matter what your interests and passions may be.

UPCOMING:

THE TRAVELING PLATE – ARC BROWARD

Join ARC Broward at the Historic Stranahan House Museum on March
4th for an intimate dinner featuring our friend, and winner of LHPC
Battle Seafood at our 2019 Chef Shakedown, David MacLennan. He
will be cooking for guests alongside students from the Arc Educates
Entry-Level Culinary Arts Program. All proceeds go towards
providing scholarships for students in the Arc Educates program.
Tickets on sale at www.arcbroward.com.

SOARING VALOR –
GARY SINISE FOUNDATION

I am incredibly honored to have been chosen to travel to New Orleans with
the Gary Sinise Foundation March 24th – 27th along with 34 WWII Veterans.
This foundation honors Veterans in a similar manner as Honor Flight, but
travels to New Orleans to the WWII Museum as opposed to visiting the
memorials in DC. The National WWII Museum was built to honor those
heroes who fought to save the world from tyranny and most of them have not
gotten the chance to experience it. As of today, almost 900 Veterans have
participated in the Soaring Valor experience and we now get to add 34 more
from right here in South Florida. These men and women taught us the true
meaning of patriotism and we remain forever grateful for their sacrifices.

TASTE OF LIGHTHOUSE POINT – ROTARY CLUB OF POMPANO BEACH

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

Alexis Contreras

My name is Alexis Contreras. I was born and raised in Mexico City but I’ve been living in south Florida for most
of my adult life. My kids are 3 cats and a parrot, which I adore! I first got into the fitness industry in 2014
completing a 200-hour yoga teacher training. Shortly after, I became a Certified Spin Instructor as well as Group
and Personal Trainer. I am a full time fitness instructor and when I’m not teaching class, I am probably taking one!
It is safe to say that teaching is my true passion and feel very blessed to be part of such an amazing community.
You can find me Thursdays at the club for “Spin and Pump” which is 30 minutes of spin and 30 minutes of weight
training. See you in class!

MARINA

I have been asked several times recently, why we don’t fly the It means you are free of any questionable issues and request port

two flag poles we have at LHPYC are called “gaff rigged poles”
and used by navies, yacht clubs and boaters all around the world. Lastly, if you have a boat, you absolutely need to fly our club

A gaff rigged pole began its origin at sea and because of all the Marina &

different nation’s flags from the very top of the main mast. In
older times the stern of a ship was the place of command where
one would steer the vessel and where the Captains quarters were
thus making it a place of honor and that is where ships would fly
their country flag and so it still is today. Take a look at the boats
in our marina; the American flags are flying on gaff’s in the center
of vessels sterns while the club burgee typically fly’s forward off
the bow.

Some of the flag etiquette I learned as young man working in the
charter industry is interesting but seemingly almost obsolete these
days. We would fly a solid blue flag on our starboard side when
the owner or charter guest was absent. It was supposed to keep
people from intruding when you didn’t see one flying. We would
always fly a solid white flag on the starboard side when having
dinner and leave it up till dishes were done.

One flag, the “Q” flag for quarantine (solid yellow) is still used
today when entering a new harbor outside of your home country.
