Benefits of Multilingualism in
Early Childhood

By: Lorna Larson & Julie Ostlund, English Language Specialists

In countries all over the world, people are fluent in two or more languages. In fact, more people in the world are multilingual
(can speak more than one language) than monolingual (can speak only one language). (Zelasko and Antunez, 2000)

There are many benefits to being multilingual. Here are just a few:

1) Being multilingual is a benefit to a child’s brain and learning.
2) Maintaining home language and culture strengthens family and community bonds.
3) Learning to read and speak in one’s home language builds a strong foundation for

learning to read and speak in a second language.

There are 34 home languages spoken by students and families in our Early Childhood and Family Education (EC&FE) classrooms.
Thus, the rich diversity of Osseo Area Schools is the perfect setting for fostering multilingualism!

In our EC&FE program, we have two English Specialists who support children throughout the nine EC&FE locations in our
district. These specialists work with staff, students and families to support language learning in both English and the students’
home languages. They deliver lessons using strategies that develop listening and speaking skills. Their lessons are delivered in the
classroom to all of the students regardless of which languages are spoken at home. All students are able to benefit from the lessons,
which is great, because in reality we are all language learners!

Additionally, the EC&FE English Specialists interact with
children during playtime. When children are playing,
they are curious and motivated to learn new words.
Hence, playtime creates a perfect setting for language
learning! Moreover, classroom teachers and assistants
who work with children every day, create warm and
welcoming environments that set the stage for all
learning, including English.

As our program strives to create
a community that is culturally
responsive and inclusive, we know
that supporting multilingualism respects
and addresses the individual needs of each
child and family.

Children benefit from learning about
cultures. Please talk to your child’s teacher
if you would like to share songs, games and
stories! With your help, being multilingual
is not only desirable, but possible!

Early Childhood Screening

Screening is a FREE service for all children.

All Minnesota children must be screened prior to enrolling in kindergarten. The ideal time for screening
is between the ages of 3 and 4. Your child’s screening results are based on their age at the time of
screening.

At screening, parents learn about their child’s growth and development
and can ask questions if they have concerns.

Early Childhood Screening is a FREE check
of your child’s:
