WITHIN OUR WORLD

A Monthly Publication by the West Philadelphia Senior Community Center

AUGUST 21ST IS YOUR DAY! AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS

August 21st is an important day! COOKOUT @ CAROUSEL HOUSE
AUG. 30 - 9AM-3PM
It’s the day our nation honors the rich
and diverse life experience of older SOCIAL DANCE PARTY
adults. It’s the day the U.S. applauds all of AUG. 18 - MORE INFO ON BACK COVER
the accomplishments and contributions
of its senior population. It’s the day NO SATURDAY CLASSES IN AUGUST
known across our country as National
Senior Citizens Day. West Philadelphia
President Ronald Regan signed a Senior Community Center
proclamation in 1988 to make National 1016 N. 41st St., Philadelphia, PA 19104
Senior Citizens Day an officially 215-386-0379 • westphilaseniorcenter.o1rg
recognized day of honor. The words of
that proclamation have been recorded for posterity and will remain as an
enduring tribute to the lives of America’s senior citizens.
Here is an abridged version of this enduring proclamation:
“Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families,
our communities, and our country. That remains true today, and gives
us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior
citizens who mean so much to our land.
For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to
accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We
can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our
communities are good places in which to mature and grow older—places
in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the
encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue
to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
The proclamation ends by calling upon “the people of the United States to
observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

To every one of our cherished members and all of the older adults in
our community—we salute you and are ever grateful for the richness
and inspiration you bring to our lives. HAPPY SENIOR CITIZENS DAY!
