OWL 2017 Report to Our Community

OWL 2017 Report to Our Community

ENRICHING LIVES EVERY DAY

2017 REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY

OLIVER WOLCOTT LIBRARY

Letter From the President & Director

Thank you for cherishing your library!

Because of YOU, we have so much good news to
share. Thanks to the partnership and vision of our
community, our library patrons, our staff and
board, our donors and taxpayers, the Oliver
Wolcott Library continues to shine brightly.

Because of YOU, we are meeting our goal to enrich, engage, inform, innovate, connect and
communicate.

Our community loves books and culture! We are delighted to report that books and culture are alive and
doing well here at OWL. For the second year in a row, we are ranked as the third library in the state for
adult circulation per capita and the circulation per child has risen dramatically. In 2000, circulation per
child was 19.9 and now it is 44.1 per child, an increase of 120%!

In the following pages, you will see a vital and welcoming cultural and community resource full of
activity and meeting the needs of all.
 We’re offering innovative programs like connecting children to literature and art with

our summer reading program that culminated in a trip to an art museum.
 We’re engaging readers with authors through our monthly author talks.
 We’re communicating, engaging and informing each other through discussions at our

Monday Scholars, Sunday Series, and our book clubs for adults and children.
 We’re connecting our community by ensuring everyone has access to the Internet and Wifi

as well as offering instruction on how to use technology through our Book-a-Librarian service.
And so much more!

Because you cherish your library and your community, we have accomplished so much together. Thank
you for supporting the library and for using your library. Thank you for making it possible to share good
news!

Most sincerely,

Emily Dalton
President, Oliver Wolcott Library

Ann Marie White
Library Director

Adult Circulation - Third in the State

Once again, the Oliver Wolcott Library is third in the state for total adult circulation per capita! With 180
Connecticut public libraries reporting, OWL ranked third for adult circulation (per capita) and is in the
top 1% of all libraries in the state.

Circulation Per Child Increases Significantly

Although total population of children (ages 0 to 14) has seen a 30% decline in the last 15 years, and our
total circulation number for children’s materials has declined, the circulation per child has risen sharply!

Using latest statistical information, Litchfield’s juvenile population (0 to 14) was 1,141 in 2000 and library
circulation per child was 19.9. In 2015, Litchfield’s juvenile population was 793, and library circulation per
child was 44.1, an increase of 120%!

The children in our community are reading and using the library more than ever before!

Storyhours, After-School Book Clubs, & Summer Events

Weekly storyhours, outreach programs to area preschools and day care centers, after-school book
clubs, our annual Family Day, and a wide-range of summer events are offered to keep children engaged
and excited to learn. Last year, an average of 736 children attended an event each month.

Connecting Literature & Art: Museum Trip for Children Grades 4 to 8

Last summer (2016), we offered all students in grades 4 to 8 who participated in our summer reading
book clubs the opportunity to visit the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA). Each book club
read a novel connected to American art, and then had the chance to view the American art at the
museum.
Connecting literature and art, our museum trip to the NBMAA was a grand success. Almost 50 students
participated, with most telling us it was their first time visiting a large museum, and all telling us what a
powerful and unforgettable experience it was to read about art and then experience it. This trip was
generously funded through the Ellen Keeney Fund.

Library - School Partnerships

The library partners with the Litchfield Public Schools to support education in our community. We work
together during the summer months to support summer reading, and throughout the school year by
supporting the school’s curriculum and their support of our enrichment programs.

Monday Scholars

Combining the best of online learning with the best of classroom discussion, our Monday Scholars
program explores a topic, in-depth, over the course of several weeks. Reports indicate that massive
open online courses tend to average 7 to 15% retention rate. Our Monday Scholars has an average
retention rate of 65 to 75%. Topics included: The Great American Presidents, Food: a Cultural History,
English in America: a Linguistic History, and Heroes & Legends: the Most Influential Characters of
Literature.

Sunday Series

Our Sunday Series offers monthly book discussions led by a scholar or author. This year, all topics were
two-part series and included discussions on: Harper Lee led by Joseph Montebello, Agatha Christie led
by Stuart Barnett, Henry James led by Mark Scarbrough, and two Booker Prize Winners led by Mark
Schenker.

Jamie Gagarin Art Gallery

Through a juried selection, we introduce the community to varied mediums of art and artists. Five times
a year we exhibit artwork for sale with bi-monthly shows where a percentage of all sales directly benefit
library services. In January and February, we exhibit student artwork from the Litchfield Public Schools
and Litchfield Montessori School. This year, we featured watercolors, photographs, mixed media
painting, and abstract paintings. Artists included Wendy Costa, Elizabeth Wolff, Marcey Hladik and
Joyce Lawton, Carol Moore, and Group Show of nine artists including Hitchy Rahilly.

Materials: Books, Films, Music

We carefully cultivate, select and preserve our collection so that it meets our community’s needs and
interests now and for the future: keeping up with the current bestsellers and hot picks as well as
ensuring we have classics and up-to-date information on a variety of topics.

The OWL Box is a branch of the library located inside the Bantam Market in Bantam. It is a vending
machine filled with books, DVDs and audio books. Anyone with a Connecticut public library card may
use the machine. Materials may be returned in the drop box located outside the Market or at the main
library on South Street. This year, 2,899 items, or an average of 241 items each month, circulated from
the OWL Box.

Capital Projects

This year, capital projects included: the repaving of our entire parking lot and sidewalks, the
replacement of our 1967 air handler unit, replacement of our community room floor, and the
emergency repair of most of the library’s sewer pipe system.

New Parking Lot

The generosity of the Seherr-Thoss Charitable Trust made it possible for the library to repave its entire
parking lot and sidewalks. More than twenty years had passed since the last repaving, and the parking
lot was cracked and crumbling. This grant allowed us to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the
parking lot while ensuring its longevity.

Fiber installation Moves Forward

The library is slated to have fiber in place for Internet access by late September of 2017. The project,
funded through State and Federal grants, will provide our community with the fastest and most reliable
Internet access available today. This year, the pipe that will carry the fiber was installed.
