THE HISTORY OF THE

DELTA PI LAMBDA CHAPTER OF

ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.

THE DELTA PI LAMBDA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. SPROUTED
AS AN IDEA DURING THE LATER MONTHS OF 1948. EARLY IN DECEMBER OF THAT YEAR, THE
IDEA BECAME A REALITY WITH A CHARTER BEING GRANTED ON THE 12TH DAY OF THAT
MONTH TO NINE FELLOW MEN OF ALPHADOM. PIONEERING THE MOVEMENT WERE OUR
CHAPTER “MINI - JEWELS”: STEWART “JELLY” BENNET, ANDREW J. DURGAN, JAMES E.
HOBBS, DR. E.A. MADDOX, A.C. PEOPLES, WILLIAM T. PETERS, JR., JOHN D. TAYLOR, DR. J.H.
WILLIAMS, AND W.J. YELDER.

THE OFFICIAL SETTING UP OF THE CHAPTER TOOK PLACE ON THE EVENING OF JANUARY 4,
1949 IN THE OFFICES OF MINI JEWEL E.A. MADDOX, 25 ½ FRANKLIN STREET WITH BROTHER
H. COUNCIL TRENHOLM OF MONTGOMERY REPRESENTING THE GENERAL PRESIDENT.
ACCOMPANYING BROTHER TRENHOLM TO SELMA WERE BROTHERS J. GARRICK HARDY, W.E.
ANDERSON, U.E. DANIEL, AND W.H. COSTON..... ALL OF THE ALPHA UPSILON LAMBDA CHAP-
TER OF MONTGOMERY.

OUR FIRST REGULAR MEETING WAS HELD ON JANUARY 18, 1949, AT WHICH TIME THE NAMES
OF THE BROTHERS M.W. AKINS AND M.F. ROBINSON WERE ADDED TO OUR MEMBERSHIP.

DURING THE EARLY YEAR, THE LOCAL CHAPTER SOUGHT TO FOLLOW THE PATTERN OF THE
NATIONAL ORGANIZATION BY OFFERING COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS TO DESERVING HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS AND SPONSORING CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMS. THE FIRST SCHOLARSHIP
WAS AWARDED IN 1949 TO MOSES ANDERSON ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST COMMENCE-
MENT EXERCISE HELD IN THE NEW HUDSON HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM. SINCE THAT TIME,
SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE BEEN AWARDED TO GRADUATES OF SELMA UNIVERSITY, CAMDEN
ACADEMY, SNOW HILL INSTITUTE, PINE APPLE HIGH SCHOOL, AND DALLAS COUNTY TRAINING
SCHOOL.

THE FIRST INITIATION OF THE CHAPTER WAS HELD ON JANUARY 9, 1951. THE INITIATES
INCLUDED NEOPHYTES SAMUEL J. BROOKS, EDWARD G. BRYANT, JOSEPH DAVIS, BENJAMIN E.
HATCHER, ROBERT PREYER, AND R.W. STONE.

FROM THIS SMALL BEGINNING, DELTA PI LAMBDA HAS GROWN INTO A VIBRANT EXAMPLE OF
“MANLY DEEDS, SCHOLARSHIP, AND LOVE FOR ALL MANKIND” TO THIS PRESENT DATE.
