GRAND
FINALE
CELEBRATION

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
presents Students of the Year.

Today, we are closer than we have ever been to beating
cancer. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is in
search of promising young leaders to spearhead the
fight against cancer in their communities.

Students of the Year is a seven-week philanthropic
leadership development program during which students
foster professional skills, such as entrepreneurship,
marketing, and project management, to raise funds for
LLS, the world’s largest nonprofit fighting blood cancer.

The title Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the
candidate or co-candidates in each community that
raise the most funds during the 7-week competition.

We call on those strong enough to fight for others.

CONGRATULATIONS
TO OUR 2019 WINNERS

Zander Bolas

Zander is a senior at Hardin Valley Academy, where he plays
on his school soccer team and is involved in a variety of clubs
and leadership roles. Zander co-led the winning 2019 Knoxville
Students of the Year Team, Body Mechanics, with co-candidates
Leo Jaramillo and Ben Palya. He participated in Students of the
Year to raise money so that LLS can research how to beat cancer,
and then, maybe one day, we can live in a cancer free world.

Leo Jaramillo

Leo is a senior at Hardin Valley Academy, and co-led the winning
2019 Knoxville Students of the Year Team, Body Mechanics,
with co-candidates Ben Palya and Zander Bolas. Leo plans on
attending a four-year university, hopefully an SEC school, in
the fall of 2020. Currently, he is undecided about his field of
interest, but he does know that whatever he pursues, he would
like to make a difference in the world and leave a positive impact
on others. He enjoys playing soccer and excels academically.
Leo says that Students of the Year gave him an opportunity to
get out of his comfort zone while allowing him to give back to his
community.

Ben Palya

Ben is a senior at Hardin Valley Academy, where he is the
captain of his school soccer team. Ben co-led the winning
2019 Knoxville Students of the Year Team, Body Mechanics,
with co-candidates Leo Jaramillo and Zander Bolas. Ben wants
to attend either the University of Georgia or Butler University
and major in Journalism and Marketing, with the goal of being
a reporter for a major sports media company. He ran for
Students of the Year last year because Leo introduced him
to the campaign and got him interested in the cause and the
program. Ben has had family members affected by cancer and
wants to stop the disease from affecting others.

WELCOME

TO THE 2020 STUDENTS OF THE YEAR CAMPAIGN

Good Evening,
On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), welcome
to the 2020 Knoxville Students of the Year Grand Finale!
Tonight we celebrate the hard work of the five candidates that
have spent the last eleven weeks participating in this unique
leadership program. High school students form teams and
compete against each other to raise the most funds for LLS, and
the candidate or co-candidates with the most funds raised earns
the title of “Student(s) of the Year” and a college scholarship.
There is no doubt that this year’s campaign has been a little
different than in years past. For that reason, I am beyond thrilled
to congratulate these candidates, parents and team members
on their fundraising efforts, and feel privileged to celebrate
such a dedicated group of people on behalf of our patients and
their families.
The funds raised through Students of the Year serve LLS’
mission to find cures for blood cancers through life-saving
research, and to provide financial support to patients and
their families. LLS has funded $1.3 billion in cancer research
since 1949, and since 2017, helped develop 49 of the 53 FDA-
approved blood cancer therapies. LLS prides itself on meeting
the needs of patients at each stage—by helping them now with
the financial burden of treatment, and by helping future patients
with the development of new, cutting-edge therapies.
No matter who is named 2020 Student of the Year, all of these
candidates are winners, especially to LLS and the patients we
serve. Enjoy your evening, and thank you for supporting these
candidates and LLS!
Sincerely,
Tricia Ward,
Senior Campaign Manager, Students of the Year
Lori Friel,
Campaign Manager, Man/Woman of the Year

MEET OUR
MISSION SPEAKER

“LLS is committed
to helping children
like me.
They believe that
children should
not just survive,
but thrive
in their lives
after treatment.”
- Tarin Bowles

Tarin
Bowles

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Nashville, TN

Tarin Bowles is 10-years-old and attends Lockeland Elementary
Design Center. She enjoys running club, dance, swimming, singing,
Girl Scouts, and theater, and is currently starring in The Theater
Bug’s production of “Oddly Puddle Is From Inner Space.” She is
also a leukemia survivor.
Tarin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on
February 9, 2015. She spent a month after being diagnosed in the
hospital undergoing procedures, taking countless medications,
and by the time she started kindergarten, Tarin was taking
chemotherapy nightly and had lost her hair. It was at the end of
Tarin’s first grade year when she finally completed two years of
chemotherapy, and she is now in remission.

MEET OUR
HONORED HERO

Alex
Grappin

T-Cell Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Knoxville, TN

Alex is 9-years-old and currently being treated for T-cell Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was diagnosed in August 2018
and reached remission within 25 days. He was doing well and
tolerating his treatment with humor and bravery. Alex received
one medication, methotrexate, as part of his treatment that many
leukemia patients receive via a spinal tap. Unfortunately for Alex,
what was supposed to be a routine form of treatment turned
into a new challenge for him. Alex contracted methotrexate
toxicity and ended up in a coma. Over nine months have passed
and Alex has battled back, having endured months of grueling
physical, occupational and speech therapy to relearn how to
walk, talk and perform other basic skills.
Today, Alex continues to push through this challenge, still with
humor, and has about two more years of treatment for his
leukemia. Alex and his family are excited to be a part of the
Students of the Year campaign and share his story to help fund
life-saving research.

EVENT HOST

Josh Ward

Josh Ward, 34, got a half-decade jump
on most radio talent his age.  At a young
age he knew he liked sports. He was
fascinated by sports media and knew it
was a competitive field. Why wait until
college or after to get started? “I do think
that I’m in a lucky position to get to come
to work and talk about sports every day,”
he said. At 17, he became a producer of
the WNML afternoon talk show “Sports
Talk” with co-hosts John Wilkerson and Jimmy Hyams. He did it for
six years, along with on-air opportunities covering sports for WNML
and WIVK. “If I were to hear what I was like at 16, 17 or 18 years old, it
probably would not sound radio worthy,” Ward said. But it was a chance
to grow his on-air skills, to try different things.

In 2008, he began hosting Sports 180 on WNML, the top-rated midday
sports-talk show in the Knoxville market, covering everything from UT
athletics to SEC sports to pro teams. He writes daily stories, plans topics,
schedules guests for each show and manages a team. “The fact that
(Cumulus) gave me a chance to prove myself and a chance to grow on
the air, I think …that’s an example of me being really lucky,” Ward said.

Today, he’s also the host of “Locked On Vols,” a daily podcast covering
UT athletics, and makes appearances as a sports analyst and is a
panelist on “The Sports Source” with WATE-TV. He’s been a writer for
MrSEC.com and the Knoxville News Sentinel. “When you meet people
that listen to the show and they talk about how they listen every day
or they listen every chance they get, or people who tell us that they’re
in their car every day … and it helps entertain them in their long drives,
that’s a really cool thing, so I try to not take that for granted,” he
said.  Ward volunteers with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a
member of the leadership executive committee for the annual Man and
Woman of the Year campaign – in which competitors have 10 weeks to
raise as much money as possible to help support families battling cancer
and cancer research. Ward was named Man of the Year in 2015.  Josh
lives in Knoxville, with his wife Kellie, and has two little boys.
