Final Combined

ChowL-tEo gAuidNe: UP

WELCOME

First, this is going to be really fun! Thank you for helping your
students, family, friends and community learn how to make a

difference for the Rappahannock River!

This how-to guide will equip you
with the steps for conducting a
cleanup. Unfortunately, wherev-
er there are people, there is
trash. You can find tires, shop-
ping carts, bicycles, grills and a
myriad of other items all over the
watershed. You will be surprised
what you find!

MstepAonKe:E PARTNERSHIPS

To hold a litter cleanup, you will
need to find volunteers and
sites as well as supplies. There
are many organizations that
hold cleanups and might be
interested in working with you.
Friends of the Rappahannock
has trash bags, gloves, orange
vests and litter pickers for use.
Check out local groups near
you or give us a call!

sFteIpNtwDo: SITES

The first step to a successful cleanup
is finding sites that need attention.
You can take a walk or drive through
your community and find locations
that have accumulated trash. Medi-
ans, ditches and commonly used
areas are always prime locations!
However, as you are finding locations,
be sure to note if they are on public or
private land. If you are trying to clean-
up on private land you will need to
have permission from the landowner.

sSteAp thFreEe:TY Safety is very important when
having a cleanup. If you are
affiliated with an organization
or business you may need to
have participants sign waivers.
Additionally, you should review
the following rules:
• Wear orange vests while
working along roads
• Always have adult
supervision
• Do not pick up anything sharp
with bare hands
• Gloves must be worn
• Closed toe shoes are
required
• If it looks dangerous,
don’t do it

Cleanups can be done by in small or large groups; it is up to the organizer. If
you are planning to facilitate a community cleanup, here are some helpful tips:
• Have a centralized meeting location that volunteers can disperse from
• Write a Letter to the Editor inviting the community
• Have it added to the community calendars • Go on the radio
• Partner with an organization • Put it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

sCteLp sEix:ANUP DAY!

On the day of your cleanup,
organize your supplies into group
sizes of four to five volunteers.
Make sure each group has litter
pickers, gloves, bags and vests. If
you need waivers signed, be sure to
do that before volunteers set out to
cleanup. Have all volunteers
check-in and check-out so that you
can keep track. Review all safety
protocols and give volunteers a time
to meet back at the centralized
meeting location to finish the day.
Have volunteers grab their supplies
and head out!
